[Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Accurate land cover mapping is important for urban planning and management. Remote sensing data have been widely applied for urban land cover mapping. However, obtaining land cover classification via optical remote sensing data alone is difficult due to spectral confusion. To reduce the confusion between dark impervious surface and water, the Sentinel-1A Synthetic Aperture Rader (SAR) data are synergistically combined with the Sentinel-2B Multispectral Instrument (MSI) data. The novel support vector machine with composite kernels (SVM-CK) approach, which can exploit the spatial information, is proposed to process the combination of Sentinel-2B MSI and Sentinel-1A SAR data. The classification based on the fusion of Sentinel-2B and Sentinel-1A data yields an overall accuracy (OA) of 92.12% with a kappa coefficient (KA) of 0.89, superior to the classification results using Sentinel-2B MSI imagery and Sentinel-1A SAR imagery separately. The results indicate that the inclusion of Sentinel-1A SAR data to Sentinel-2B MSI data can improve the classification performance by reducing the confusion between built-up area and water. This study shows that the land cover classification can be improved by fusing Sentinel-2B and Sentinel-1A imagery. [Termes IGN] segmentation en régionsRésumé : (auteur) Categorical maps of landscape types (LTs) are useful abstractions that simplify spatial and thematic complexity of natural landscapes, thus facilitating land resources management. A local landscape arises from a fusion of patterns of natural themes (such as land cover, landforms, etc.), which makes an unsupervised identification and mapping of LTs difficult. This paper introduces the integrated co-occurrence matrix (INCOMA) – a signature for numerical representation of multi-thematic categorical patterns. INCOMA enables an unsupervised identification and mapping of LTs. The region is tessellated into a large number of local landscapes – patterns of themes over small square-shaped neighborhoods. With local landscapes represented by INCOMA signatures and with dissimilarities between local landscapes calculated using the Jensen-Shannon Divergence (JSD), LTs can be identified and mapped using standard clustering or segmentation techniques. Resultant LTs are typically heterogeneous with respect to categories of contributing themes reflecting the human perception of a landscape. LTs calculated by INCOMA are more faithful abstractions of actual landscapes than LTs obtained by the current method of choice – the map overlay. The concept of INCOMA is described, and its application is demonstrated by an unsupervised mapping of LT zones in Europe based on combined patterns of land cover and landforms. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Land use as contained in geospatial databases constitutes an essential input for different applications such as urban management, regional planning and environmental monitoring. In this paper, a hierarchical deep learning framework is proposed to verify the land use information. For this purpose, a two-step strategy is applied. First, given high-resolution aerial images, the land cover information is determined. To achieve this, an encoder-decoder based convolutional neural network (CNN) is proposed. Second, the pixel-wise land cover information along with the aerial images serves as input for another CNN to classify land use. Because the object catalogue of geospatial databases is frequently constructed in a hierarchical manner, we propose a new CNN-based method aiming to predict land use in multiple levels hierarchically and simultaneously. A so called Joint Optimization (JO) is proposed where predictions are made by selecting the hierarchical tuple over all levels which has the maximum joint class scores, providing consistent results across the different levels. The conducted experiments show that the CNN relying on JO outperforms previous results, achieving an overall accuracy up to 92.5%. In addition to the individual experiments on two test sites, we investigate whether data showing different characteristics can improve the results of land cover and land use classification, when processed together. To do so, we combine the two datasets and undertake some additional experiments. The results show that adding more data helps both land cover and land use classification, especially the identification of underrepresented categories, despite their different characteristics. [Termes IGN] surface imperméableRésumé : (Auteur) Urban spectral indices have made promising improvements in the last two decades in urban land use land cover studies through mapping, estimation, change detection, time-series analyzing, urban dynamics, monitoring, modeling, and so on. Remote sensing spectral indices are unsupervised, unbiased, rapid, scalable, and quantitative in information extraction. Hence, we aimed to summarize the most relevant urban spectral indices by focusing on multispectral, thermal, and nighttime lights indices. We use the search terms "urban index", "built-up index", "normalized difference built-up area (NDBI )", "impervious surface index", and "spectral urban index" to collect relevant literature from the "Web of Science Core Collection" database. We found that all urban spectral indices developed since 2003, except NDBI. This review will help understand the applications of urban spectral indices, the selection of indices based on available spectral bands, and their merits and demerits. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineMots-clés libres : spatio-temporal-spectral observation model Résumé : (auteur) Taking cities as objects being observed, urban remote sensing is an important branch of remote sensing. Given the complexity of the urban scenes, urban remote sensing observation requires data with a high temporal resolution, high spatial resolution, and high spectral resolution. To the best of our knowledge, however, no satellite owns all the above characteristics. Thus, it is necessary to coordinate data from existing remote sensing satellites to meet the needs of urban observation. In this study, we abstracted the urban remote sensing observation process and proposed an urban spatio-temporal-spectral observation model, filling the gap of no existing urban remote sensing framework. In this study, we present four applications to elaborate on the specific applications of the proposed model: 1) a spatio-temporal fusion model for synthesizing ideal data, 2) a spatio-spectral observation model for urban vegetation biomass estimation, 3) a temporal-spectral observation model for urban flood mapping, and 4) a spatio-temporal-spectral model for impervious surface extraction. We believe that the proposed model, although in a conceptual stage, can largely benefit urban observation by providing a new data fusion paradigm.
