[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (auteur) [introduction] Maps are composed of spatially related geographic objects. Spatial relations are key information for human as they support the description of relative locations: the house is to the east of the city centre, near the interchange, or at the end of the path. Consequently, preserving these spatial relations is important during map generalisation. For example, building typification is a generalisation operation that seeks to reduce the quantity of building while preserving relation between and within homogeneous buildings groups (Regnauld, 2001). Building or road patterns are remarkable distributions of elements in the map from which high-level concepts and semantics (e.g. landuse types and urban morphology) can be inferred. Such patterns can be characterized by spatial relations (e.g. proximity, similarity and continuity of these elements) and hence are visually easy to identify by a human. To identify these patterns automatically is important for automated map generalisation (Christophe and Ruas, 2002). However, it remains challenging to devise algorithms that can resemble the human level performance. The goal of this paper is to illustrate the potential of graph convolutional networks (GCN) for the identification of patterns and relations important for map generalisation with two use cases: building patterns detection, and road segment selection. Both tasks require some degree of understanding of the spatial relations between map objects. Hence, our experiments constitute a first step in exploring the capability of deep neural network for learning representations of spatial relations. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (auteur) The main theme of this research is the development of a new hybrid method for change detection of land use and land cover (LULC). LULC change detection is one of most widely used applications of remote sensing. This study used data from two different optical sensors, Landsat-8 images and Sentinel-2A images. Given the newly developed capabilities of these remote sensing satellites, it was necessary to devise appropriate techniques to realise the benefits that they offer. Therefore, three effective change detection methods have been tested, comprehensively analysed, and used to inform the design and development of a new hybrid method of change detection. The studied change detection methods were change vector analysis (CVA), multi-index integrated change analysis (MIICA), and the comprehensive change detection method (CCDM). Case studies were conducted in two regions, Bristol (United Kingdom) and Hail (Saudi Arabia), to provide sufficient variety of inputs to enable the response of more LULC varieties to be recorded. Finally, the Coordination of Information on the Environment (Corine) land cover scheme was used to identify land cover types and LULC changes. In the study area of Bristol, the new hybrid change detection method achieved an overall accuracy of 90% and 0.81 kappa, while the results for the study area of Hail were 74% overall accuracy and 0.40 kappa. The change detection results obtained by the new hybrid method constitute a significant improvement over the implementation of the existing CVA, MIICA and CCDM methods at the two study areas while using Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2A images. [Termes IGN] ville durableRésumé : (auteur) This thesis addresses the development and analysis of new tools and methods for monitoring and characterizing urban growth using geo-data and land-use/land-cover (LULC) databases, as well as exploring their relationships with socio-economic factors, providing new evidences regarding the use of LULC data for urban characterization at different levels by means of spatial and statistical methods. First, the most common spatio-temporal metrics were compiled and implemented within a software tool, IndiFrag. Then, we present a methodology based on spatio-temporal metrics and propose a new index that quantifies the inequality of growth between population and built-up areas to analyze and compare urban growth patterns at different levels. This allowed for a differentiation of growing patterns, besides, the analysis at various levels contributed to a better understanding of such patterns. Second, we quantified the two-way relationship between the urban structure in cities and their socio-economic status by means of spatial metrics issued from a local climate zone map for 31 cities in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Based on these data, we quantified their relationship with socio-economic indicators by means of multiple linear regression models, explaining a significant part of their variability. The proposed method is transferable to other datasets, levels, and regions. Third, we assessed the use of spatio-temporal metrics derived from LULC maps to identify urban growth spatial patterns. We applied LULC change models to simulate different long-term scenarios of urban growth following various spatial patterns on diverse baseline urban forms. Then, we computed spatio-temporal metrics for the simulated scenarios, selected the most explanatory by applying a discriminant analysis and classified the growth patterns using clustering methods. Finally, we identified empirical relationships between socio-economic indicators and their change over time with the spatial structure of the built and natural elements in up to 600 urban areas from 32 countries. We employed random forest regression models and the spatio-temporal metrics were able to explain substantially the variability of socio-economic variables. This confirms that spatial patterns and their change are linked to socio-economic indicators. This work contributes to a better understanding of urban growth patterns and improves knowledge about the relationships between urban spatial structure and socio-economic factors, providing new methods for monitoring and assessing urban sustainability by means of LULC databases, which could be used by researchers, urban planners and decision-makers to ensure the sustainable future of urban environments. While many studies have focused on the circulation role of woodland features, very few have focused on the role of ecological continuities within agricultural mosaics. The objectives of this thesis were (1) to assess the combined use of Sentinel 1 and 2 time series to identify and characterize the elements of ecological continuities through land cover classifications and crop characterization in wooded and crop-dominated landscapes and (2) to estimate the impact of the spatio-temporal structuring of these landscape on biodiversity using metrics derived from Sentinel time series. The results showed that although S-2 data are more adapted than S-1 data to discriminate between land cover/land use types in wooded landscapes and phenological stages of wheat and rapeseed in crop-dominated landscapes, the combined use of S-2 and S-1 data improves their accuracy of the classifications, with S-1 data also showing a strong interest in cloudy areas. They also showed the interest of polarimetric indicators derived from S-1 data to characterize wheat and rapeseed crops. Finally, they highlighted the interest of the biophysical heterogeneity metrics derived from S-2 data to accurately estimate the distribution of carabid beetle species. The use of this metric, calculated with free images available everywhere on Earth, continuous and consistent from one site to another and from one type of crop to another,
should contribute to the study of the impact of ecological continuities on biodiversity.Note de contenu : General introduction
