[Termes IGN] temps réelRésumé : (Auteur) This paper deals with multiway spatial joins when (i) there is limited time for query processing and the goal is to retrieve the best possible solutions within this limit (ii) there is unlimited time and the goal is to retrieve a single exact solution, if such a solution exists, or the best approximate one otherwise. The first case is motivated by the high cost of join processing in real-time systems involving large amounts of multimedia data, while the second one is motivated by applications that require 'negative' examples. We propose several search algorithms for query processing under theses conditions. For the limited-time case we develop some non-deterministic search heuristics that can quickly retrieve good solutions. However, these heuristics are not guaranteed to find the best solutions, even without a time limit. Therefore, for the unfirnited-time case we describe systematic search algorithms tailored specifically for the efficient retrieval of a single solution. Both types of algorithms are integrated with R-trees in order to prune the search space. Our proposal is evaluated with extensive experimental comparison. [Termes IGN] jointure spatialeRésumé : (Auteur) This volume contains updated versions of the ten papers presented at the First International Workshop on Temporal, Spatial and Spatio-Temporal Data Mining (TSDM 2000) held in conjunction with the 4th European Conference on Principles and Practice of Knowledge Discovery in Databases (PKDD 2000) in Lyons, France in September, 2000. The aim of the workshop was to bring together experts in the analysis of temporal and spatial data mining and knowledge discovery in temporal, spatial or spatio-temporal database systems as well as knowledge engineers and domain experts from allied disciplines. The workshop focused on research and practice of knowledge discovery from datasets containing explicit or implicit temporal, spatial or spatio-temporal information. The ten original papers in this volume represent those accepted by peer review following an international call for papers. All papers submitted were refereed by an international team of data mining researchers listed below. We would like to thank the team for their expert and useful help with this process. Following the workshop, authors were invited to amend their papers to enable the feedback received from the conference to be included in the final papers appearing in this volume. A workshop report was compiled by Kathleen Hornsby which also discusses the panel session that was held. In late 1998, a bibliography of temporal, spatial and spatio-temporal data mining research papers was compiled by John Roddick and Myra Spiliopoulou and published in SigKDD Explorations. Following the dramatic increase in interest in this area over the past few years, it was decided that an update to this bibliography was warranted and should be included in this volume. It is our contention that temporal, spatial and spatio-temporal data mining holds many promises. We hope this volume, as well as the TSDM Workshop series, is useful in adding to the body of knowledge in this area. [Termes IGN] jointure spatialeRésumé : (Auteur) The growing production of maps is generating huge volume of data stored in large spatial databases. This huge volume of data exceeds the human analysis capabilities. Spatial data mining methods, derived from data mining methods, allow the extraction of knowledge from these large spatial databases, taking into account the essential notion of spatial dependency. This paper focuses on this specificity of spatial data mining by showing the suitability of join indices to this context. It describes the join index structure and shows how it could be used as a tool for spatial data mining. Thus, this solution brings spatial criteria support to non-spatial information systems. [Termes IGN] requête spatialeRésumé : (Auteur) The family of R-trees is suitable for storing various kinds of multidimensional objects and is considered an excellent choice for indexing a spatial database. Region Quadtrees are suitable for storing 2-dimensional regional data and their linear variant is used in many Geographical Information Systems for this purpose. In this report, we present five algorithms suitable for processing join queries between these two successful, although very different, access methods. Two of the algorithms axe based on heuristics that aim at minimizing I/O cost with a limited amount of main memory. We also present the results of experiments performed with real data that compare the I/O performance of these algorithms.
