[Termes IGN] trajectoire (véhicule non spatial)Résumé : (Auteur) The management of moving objects has been intensively studied in recent years. A wide and increasing range dose applications has to deal with spatial objects whose position changes continuously over time, called moving objects. The main interest of these applications is to efficiently store and query the positions of these continuously moving objects. To achieve this goal, index structures are required. The main proposals of index structures for moving objects deal with unconstrained 2-dimensional movement. Constrained movement is a special and a very important case of object movement. For example, cars move in roads and trains in railroads. In this paper we propose a new index structure for moving objects on networks, the MON-Tree. We describe two network models that can be indexed by the MON-Tree. The first model is edge oriented, i.e., the network is of nodes and edges and there is a polyline associated to each edge. The second one is more suitable for transportation networks and is route oriented, i.e., the network consists of routes and junctions. In this model, a polyline also serves as a representation of the routes. We propose the index in terms of the basic algorithms for insertion and querying. We test our proposal in an extensive experimental evaluation with generated data sets using as underlying networks the roads of Germany. In our tests, the MON-Tree shows good scalability and outperforms the competing index structures in updating (index creation) as well as in querying. [Termes IGN] requête spatialeRésumé : (Auteur) Geographic Information Retrieval is concerned with retrieving documents in response to a spatially related query. This paper addresses the ranking of documents by both textual and spatial relevance. To this end, we introduce multi-dimensional scattered ranking, where textually and spatially similar documents are ranked spread in the list, instead of consecutively. The effect of this is that documents close together in the ranked list have less redundant information. We present various ranking methods of this type, efficient algorithms to implement them, and experiments to show the outcome of the methods. [Termes IGN] visualisationRésumé : (Editeur)This is a book that recognizes the growing commonality between the concerns of science, government, and business. The examples of GIS people and problems that are scattered through this book have been chosen deliberately to illuminate this commonality, as well as the interplay between organizations and people from different sectors. To differing extents, the five sections of the book develop common concerns with effectiveness and efficiency, by bringing together information from disparate sources, acting within regulatory and ethical frameworks, adhering to scientific principles, and preserving good reputations. This, then, is a book that combines the basics of GIS with the solving of problems which often have no single, ideal solution - the world of business, government, and interdisciplinary, mission-orientated holistic science.
In short, we have tried to create a book that remains attuned to the way the world works now, that understands the ways in which most of us increasingly operate as knowledge workers, and that grasps the need to face complicated issues that do not have ideal solutions. As with the first edition of the book, this is an unusual enterprise and product. It has been written by a multinational partnership, drawing upon material from around the world. One of the authors is an employee of a leading software vendor and two of the other three have had business dealings with ESRI over many years. Moreover, some of the illustrations and examples come from the customers of that vendor. We wish to point out, however, that neither ESRI (nor Wiley) has ever sought to influence our content or the way in which we made our judgments, and we have included references to other software and vendors throughout the book. Whilst our lab classes are part of ESRI's Virtual Campus, we also make reference to similar sources of information in both paper and digital form. [...]Note de contenu :

Note de contenu : I - PRESENTATION
