[Termes IGN] spécification de produitRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents the strategy used to add neighborhood names and footprints to Los Angeles Digital Gazeetteer. The Gazetteer database currently contains 4500 features and is needed to : (1) facilitate the specification of footprint in the Qualified Dublin Core metadata records that are used to describe digital assets ; and (2) support the search for and retrieval of select objects based on location, time, format, and/or keyword. The role of the digital gazetteer and a new browser which will offer the library patron a web-based query form with an interactive map is explained. The interface can be used to draw a query on a map, and it provides a series of pull menus that can be used to specify time periods, formats, collections, and keywords of interest. A new method for specifying neighborhood footprints in the digital gazetteer is described in some detail, and opportunities are highlighted for generalizing the method to help with search and retrieval using the map browser. [Termes IGN] SIG 3DRésumé : (Auteur) An essential requirement to better understand activity-based travel behavior (ABTB) at the disaggregate level is the development of a spatio-temporal model able to support queries related to activities of individuals or groups of individuals. This paper describes the development and implementation of a temporal extension to a geographic information system (GIS) object-oriented model for the modeling of the time path and the retrieval of its event chaining. In this approach, time path is formulated as a totally time ordered set composed by activity events and trip events, themselves organized into time ordered sets. As sets, the time path and its components can be searched using their respective indexes. A series of methods were built that implement temporal predicates as an interface to temporally query the database. A set of positional operator methods were also designed that transform temporal topological queries into retrieval functions based on set ordering indices. Taken together, the temporal predicates and the positional operator methods define a temporal query extension that meets the retrieval needs of an ABTB database. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Conventionally, spatial data models have been designed according to object- or field-based conceptualizations of reality. Conceptualization of complex geographic phenomena that have both object and field-like properties, such as wildfire and precipitation, has not yet been incorporated into GIS data models. To this end, a new conceptual framework is proposed in this research for organizing data about such complex geographic phenomena in a GIS as a hierarchy of events, processes, and states. In this framework, discrete objects are used to show how events and processes progress in space and time, and fields are used to model how states of geographic themes vary in a space-time frame. Precipitation is used to demonstrate the construction and application of the proposed framework with digital precipitation data from April 15 to May 22, 1998, for the state of Oklahoma, U.S.A. With the proposed framework, two sets of algorithms have been developed. One set automatically assembles precipitation events and processes from the data and stores the precipitation data in the hierarchy of events, processes, and states, so that attributes about events, processes, and states are readily available for information query. The other set of algorithms computes information about the spatio-temporal behavior and interaction of events and processes. The proposed approach greatly enhances support for complex spatio-temporal queries on the behavior and relationships of events and processes.
