[Vedettes matières IGN] ForesterieRésumé : (auteur) Forestry utilizes volume predictor functions utilizing as input the diameter at breast height. Some of those functions take the power form Y = a ∗ Xb. In fact this function is fundamental for the biology field of allometric scaling theories founded round about a century ago. The theory describes the relationships between organs/body parts and the complete body of organisms.
With digital methods we can generate 3d forest point clouds non destructively in short time frames. SimpleForest is one free available tool which generates fully automated ground and tree models from high resoluted forest plots. Generated topological ordered cylinder models are called commonly QSMs.
We use SimpleForest QSMs an build a function which estimates the total supported wood volume at any given point of the tree. As input we use the supported soft wood volume for those query points. Instead of measuring directly the soft wood volume we use as a proxy the number of supported twigs. We argue with the pipe model theory for the correctness of the proxy.
We can use the named relationship to also filter our QSMs made of an open data set of tree clouds. The filter corrects overestimated radii. And we compare the corrected QSM volume against the harvested reference data for 66 felled trees. We also found QSM data of TreeQSM, a competitive and broadly accepted QSM modeling tool. Our RMSE was less than 40% of the tree QSM RMSE. And for other error measures, the r2adj. and the CCC, the relative improvement looked even better with 27% and 21% respectively.
We consider this manuscript as highly impactful because of the magnitude of quality improvement we do. The relation between soft volume and total volume distributions seems to be really strong and tree data can easily also be used as example data for the generic field of allometric scaling.

[Termes IGN] formationRésumé : (auteur) Geographical data and analyses are a useful asset in several domains of education and research including geography, history, urbanism or environmental science, amongst others, from primary school to higher education and life-long learning. In the specific context of Europe, as more and more data (including geographic data) becomes open for all, it is crucial to ensure these users have the capacity to make the most of the wealth of this data.
Reciprocally, from the perspective of data providers, education and research are particularly important application domains. They have the ability to link knowledge (production or dissemination) with data and adopt critical perspectives on this data.
In this context, a half-day workshop was organised by EuroSDR during the 2022 conference of the Association of Geographical Information Laboratories in Europe (AGILE). It focussed on current experiences developed by EuroSDR members, mainly at national mapping agencies, as well as proposals stemming from AGILE research communities, to share experiences and visions on this topic. It also targeted possible synergies to interconnect existing approaches, usually national, and achieve crossnational solutions, in Europe and beyond.

[Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (auteur) NASA's Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) is a key climate mission whose goal is to advance our understanding of the role of forests in the global carbon cycle. While GEDI is the first space-based LIDAR explicitly optimized to measure vertical forest structure predictive of aboveground biomass, the accurate interpretation of this vast amount of waveform data across the broad range of observational and environmental conditions is challenging. Here, we present a novel supervised machine learning approach to interpret GEDI waveforms and regress canopy top height globally. We propose a probabilistic deep learning approach based on an ensemble of deep convolutional neural networks (CNN) to avoid the explicit modelling of unknown effects, such as atmospheric noise. The model learns to extract robust features that generalize to unseen geographical regions and, in addition, yields reliable estimates of predictive uncertainty. Ultimately, the global canopy top height estimates produced by our model have an expected RMSE of 2.7 m with low bias. Despite significant advances during the satellite era, the monitoring of the mass changes of glaciers is still hampered by a fragmented coverage of remote sensing estimations and a poor constraint of the errors in related assessments. In this thesis, we present a globally complete and resolved estimate of glacier mass changes by spatiotemporal analysis of digital elevation models. We first develop methods based on spatiotemporal statistics to assess the accuracy and precision of digital elevation models, and to estimate time series of glacier surface elevation. In particular, we introduce a non-stationary spatial framework to estimate and propagate multi-scale spatial correlations in uncertainties of geospatial estimates. We then massively generate digital elevation models from two decades of stereo optical archives covering glaciers worldwide. From those, we estimate time series of surface elevation for all of Earth's glaciers at a resolution of 100 m during 2000-2019. Integrating these time series into volume and mass changes, we identify a significant acceleration of global glacier mass loss, as well as regionally contrasted responses that mirror decadal changes in climatic conditions. Using a large amount of independent, high-precision data, we demonstrate the validity of our analysis to yield reliable and consistent uncertainties at different scales of the spatiotemporal structure of our estimates. We expect our methods to foster robust spatiotemporal analyses, in to identify sources of biases and uncertainties in geospatial assessments. Furthermore, we anticipate our estimates to advance the understanding of the drivers that govern glacier change, and to extend our capabilities of predicting these changes at all scales. Such predictions are critically needed to design adaptive policies on the mitigation of cryospheric impacts in the context of climate change. Note de contenu : General introduction
