[Termes IGN] visionRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, issues of complexity and their application to cartographic practice and enquiry are addressed. After an initial discussion of the nature of complexity and its fitful study in cartography over recent years, an assessment is made of the potential for quantifying map complexity. A series of practical tests was devised and is described. These consider a wide range of metrics, including spatial statistical measures, entropy and image-based indices. Their application to both raster and vector mapping is investigated. Data compression shows promise as an index which can be used to characterize the graphical variation within the map face. The nature of digital data compression is described, with reference to raster map representations, and it is determined that a data-compression ratio can act as a simple and effective complexity measure. The paper concludes by listing some of the reasons why complexity, as measured by data compression, could be used in cartographic practice. [Termes IGN] Triangulated Irregular NetworkRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, a new method for the combination of 2D GIS vector data and 2.5D DTM represented by triangulated irregular networks (TIN) to derive integrated triangular 2.5D object-based landscape models (also known as 2.5D-GIS-TIN) is presented. The algorithm takes into account special geometric constellations and fully exploits existing topologies of both input data sets, it “sews the 2D data into the TIN like a sewing-machine” while traversing the latter along the 2D data. The new algorithm is called radial topology algorithm. We discuss its advantages and limitations, and describe ways to eliminate redundant nodes generated during the integration process. With the help of four examples from practical work we show that it is feasible to compute and work with such integrated data sets. We also discuss the integrated data models in the light of various general requirements and conclude that the integration based on triangulations has a number of distinct advantages. [Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (Auteur) We examine the contribution of the Doppler Orbit determination and Radiopositioning Integrated by Satellite (DORIS) technique to the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF2005) by evaluating the quality of the submitted solutions as well as that of the frame parameters, especially the origin and the scale. Unlike the previous versions of the ITRF, ITRF2005 is constructed with input data in the form of time-series of station positions (weekly for satellite techniques and daily for VLBI) and daily Earth orientation parameters (EOPs), including full variance–covariance information. Analysis of the DORIS station positions’ time-series indicates an internal precision reaching 15 mm or better, at a weekly sampling. A cumulative solution using 12 years of weekly time-series was obtained and compared to a similar International GNSS Service (IGS) GPS solution (at 37 co-located sites) yielding a weighted root mean scatter (WRMS) of the order of 8 mm in position (at the epoch of minimum variance) and about 2.5 mm/year in velocity. The quality of this cumulative solution resulting from the combination of two individual DORIS solutions is better than any individual solution. A quality assessment of polar motion embedded in the contributed DORIS solutions is performed by comparison with the results of other space-geodetic techniques and in particular GPS. The inferred WRMS of polar motion varies significantly from one DORIS solution to another and is between 0.5 and 2 mas, depending on the strategy used and in particular estimating or not polar motion rate by the analysis centers. This particular aspect certainly needs more investigation by the DORIS Analysis Centers.
