[Termes IGN] précision de la classificationRésumé : (Auteur) Variability in per cell classification accuracy is predominantly modelled with landcover class as the explanatory variable, i.e. with users' accuracies from the error matrix. Logistic regression models were developed to include other explanatory variables: heterogeneity in the 3 x 3 window around a cell, the size of the patch and the complexity of the landscape in which a cell is located. It was found that per cell, the probability of correct classification was significantly (a = 0.05) higher for cells with a less heterogeneous neighbourhood, for cells part of larger patches and for cells in regions with a less heterogeneous landscape. To validate the models, a leave-one-out procedure was applied in which the absolute difference between the actual and the model-estimated number of cells correctly classified was summarized over 55 regions in the Netherlands. The sum of differences reduced from 60.9 to 48.1 after adding the variables 'patch size' and 'landscape dominance' to the land-cover class model. Spatial variability thus modelled therefore led to a substantial improvement in the estimation of the per cell classification accuracy. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laser aéroportéRésumé : (Auteur) Vegetation structure is an important parameter in fire risk assessment and fire behavior modeling. We present a new approach deriving the structure of the upper canopy by segmenting single trees from small footprint LIDAR data and deducing their geometric properties. The accuracy LIDAR data is evaluated using six geometric reference targets, with the standard deviation of the LIDAR returns on the target being as low as 0.06 m. The segmentation is carried out by using cluster analysis on the LIDAR raw data in all three coordinate dimensions. From the segmented clusters, tree position, tree height, and crown diameter are derived and compared with field measurements. A robust linear regression of 917 tree height measurements yields a slope of 0.96 with an offset of 1 m and the adjusted R 2 resulting at 0.92. However, crown diameter is not well matched by the field measurements, with R2 being as low as 0.2, which is most certainly due to random errors in the field measurements. Finally, a geometric reconstruction of the forest scene using a paraboloid model is carried out using values of tree positsion, tree height, crown diameter, and crown base height.

[Termes IGN] reconnaissance de surfaceRésumé : (Auteur) When assessing fire danger, interpolation of the dependent variable-historic fire occurrence-is required in order to statistically compare and analyze it with human factors, environmental parameters and census statistics. To confirm the compatibility between the distinct data types, occasionally, for this kind of spatial analysis, historical observations of the primary wildland fire (given as x and y coordinates) must be transformed either to continuous surfaces or to area data. The simple overlay approach converts single point observations to area data. However, this procedure assumes lack of spatial uncertainties that would otherwise result in serious errors caused by the positional inaccuracies of the original point observations.
Here, we used kernel density interpolation to convert the original data on wildland fire ignition into an expression of areal units, defined by a raster grid and, subsequently, by the administrative borders of the municipalities in two study areas in Spain. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Urban mapping using Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) imagery presents numerous challenges. These include spectral mixing of diverse land cover components within pixels, spectral confusion with other land cover features such as fallow agricultural fields and the fact that urban classes of interest are of the land use and not the land cover category. A new methodology to address these issues is proposed. This approach involves, as a first step, the generation of two independent but rudimentary land cover products, one spectral-based at the pixel level and the other segment-based. These classifications are then merged through a rule-based approach to generate a final product with enhanced land use classes and accuracy. A comprehensive evaluation of derived products of Ottawa, Calgary and cities in southwestern Ontario is presented based on conventional ground reference data as well as inter-classification consistency analyses. Producer accuracies of 78% and 73% have been achieved for urban 'residential' and 'commercial/industrial' classes. respectively. The capability of Landsat TM to detect low density residential areas is assessed based on dwelling and population data derived from aerial photography and the 2001 Canadian census. For low population densities (i.e. below 3000 persons/km2), density is observed to be monotonically related to the fraction of pixels labeled 'residential'. At higher densities, the fraction of pixels labeled 'residential' remains constant due to Landsat's inability to distinguish between high-rise apartment dwellings and commercial/industrial structures.
