[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Editeur) Two dominant contemporary views on Information and Communication Technology are that 'the network is the computer' and 'every program is a service'. In line with these views, a strong move is being made towards network-based GIS. The network will mean that professionnals will cease to have proprietary rights over GIS and it will be freed to serve entreprise business and everyday life. Major achievements have been gained in this field. The authors give an overview of the basic issues, supporting technologies, the current status and possible directions. [Termes IGN] toile d'araignée mondialeRésumé : (Auteur) The Centre for Topographic Information in Sherbrooke (CTIS) is responsible for the distribution of its self-produced digital topographic data concerning the Canadian land-mass. Increasing use of the Internet, e-commerce and the use of databases for the storage of geospatial data, in addition to recent developments in Web mapping technologies, have lead the Centre to review its traditional ways of distributing its digital topographic data products. A new system which came into operation in May 2001 enables the sale of topographic data to a wide-ranging public. It is fully automated, from product search to data delivery, including secure credit-card transactions. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) In the process of representing quantitative spatial data on a map, it is necessary to classify attribute values into some class divisions. When a number of classes are employed, the characteristics of spatial distribution of original data can be expressed faithfully. However, its legends might become rather complicated and the delicate color differences in the represented map would be difficult to distinguish. On the other hand, when employing a few classes, the information such as small vibrating factors or local peaks might be ignored ; namely, much information of original data will be lost. Hence, we should discuss how many classes are necessary to represent spatial data. In this paper, a new classification method using an evaluation function based on Akaike's Information Criterion is proposed, and is applied to actual spatial data. Next, based on the consideration about its result, another classification method minimizing information loss of original data is proposed. Furthermore, numerical examples of its applications are achieved through the comparison with existing classification methods. [Termes IGN] troncRésumé : (Auteur) High-resolution airborne laser scanner data offer the possibility to detect and measure individual trees. In this study, an algorithm which estimated position, height, and crown diameter of individual trees was validated with field measurements. Because all the trees in this study were measured on the ground with high accuracy, their positions could be linked with laser measurements, making validation on an individual tree basis possible. In total, 71 percent of the trees were correctly detected using laser scanner data. Because a large portion of the undetected trees had a small stem diameter, 91 percent of the total stem volume was detected. Height and crown diameter of detected trees could be estimated with a root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 0,63 m and 0,61 m, respectively. Stem diameter was estimated, using laser measured tree height and crown diameter, with an RMSE of 3,8 cm. Different laser beam diameters (0,26 to 3,68 m) were also tested, the smallest beam size showing a better detection rate in dense forest. However, estimates of tree height and crown diameter were not affected much by different beam size.
