[Termes IGN] tempsRésumé : (Auteur) Current data representation techniques for GIS are geared toward representation of static situations. Although GIS are intended to provide a flexible and integrated tool for analyzing large volumes of data, representations historically used in GIS are derived from these cartographic traditions and are geared toward a similar static view. In this paper, we describe the TRIAD model for representing spatiotemporal data in a GIS context. This database model represents a completely integrated approach for handling such multidimensional data. The TRIAD model is also the basis of Tempest, a prototype GIS designed to support spatiotemporal queries and analysis. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The increasing usage in GIS of multimedia objects, such as scanned photographs and video recordings, has introduced the need to provide flexible indexing methods to help in accessing objects that may be of relevance to a range of possible applications. An experimental system is described in which media objects may be referenced to several classifications concepts, as well as qualitative descriptions of geographic location and time period. Semantic modelling techniques are used to create semantic networks that represent the hierarchical and lattice structures of conceptual, temporal and geographic space. The associated query methods enable inexact matching between user interests and the media object descriptors. Several metrics of semantic closeness, in concept, time and geography have been developped, based on scaled measures of path lengths within the semantic networks that represent the three dimensions of indexing. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a taxonomy of processes and semantics for describing and modelling spatio-temporal evolution with GIS. The approcah is based on an event-oriented representation of spatial dynamics. Events are described by sets of basic and composite processes. We show how this semantic formalism allows for comprehensive decompostion and representation of complex spatio-temporal phenomena. The explicit representation of processes is designed to record temporal relationships between geographic entities and links describing their joint evolution.
