Every summer in Portugal, Spain, Greece, Italy or France thousands of hectares of forests and shrub-land burn and even people are endangered. Since wildland fires represent a social and economic risk for the society, there is a compelling interest in understanding them to better control them or, at least, to weaken their impact. Providing accurate fuel maps is critical to study fire behavior, assess fire hazard, and quantify fire effects. Traditionally fuels had been mapped by field survey sampling, therefore a time and cost consuming task. Thus, there is a total interest in study the potential of remote sensing technologies to mapping fuels. In this report we review the standard methods and techniques to mapping fuels using airborne LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) systems data. [Termes IGN] transformation mathématiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a theoretical approach that has been developed to capture the computational intensity and computing resource requirements of geographical data and analysis methods. These requirements are then transformed into a common framework, a grid-based representation of a spatial computational domain, which supports the efficient use of emerging cyberinfrastructure environments. Two key types of transformational functions (data-centric and operation-centric) are identified and their relationships are explained. The application of the approach is illustrated using two geographical analysis methods: inverse distance weighted interpolation and the ./TGIS_A_292016_O_XML_IMAGES/TGIS_A_292016_O_ILM0001.gif spatial statistic. We describe the underpinnings of these two methods, present their conventional sequential algorithms, and then address their latent parallelism based on a spatial computational domain representation. Through the application of this theoretical approach, the development of domain decomposition methods is decoupled from specific high-performance computer architectures and task scheduling implementations, which makes the design of generic parallel processing solutions feasible for geographical analyses. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) This chapter focuses on the extraction of three-dimensional (3D) planar primitives. It presents two approaches for detecting 3D roof facets; the first one is based on the analysis of the 3D point cloud while the second one integrates aerial images. The extraction of lines from a Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) point cloud is a difficult task since LiDAR points are randomly distributed over surfaces: depending on the point density, building edges are approximately delineated. Integrating aerial images with LiDAR data in a primitive detection process may highly enhance the resulting facets. Automatic mapping of urban areas from aerial images is a challenging task for scientists and surveyors because of the complexity of urban scenes. The chapter shows that searching for planar primitives in a LiDAR point cloud has limitations with regard to a joint use of aerial images and LiDAR data. An advanced discussion, this text fills the void. Professionals in fields ranging from geology, geography and geoinformatics to physics, transportation, and law enforcement will benefit from this comprehensive discussion of topographic LiDAR principles, systems, data acquisition, and data processing techniques. The book covers ranging and scanning fundamentals, and broad, contemporary analysis of airborne LiDAR systems, as well as those situated on land and in space. The authors present data collection at the signal level in terms of waveforms and their properties; at the system level with regard to calibration and georeferencing; and at the data level to discuss error budget, quality control, and data organization. They devote the bulk of the book to LiDAR data processing and information extraction and elaborate on recent developments in building extraction and reconstruction, highlighting quality and performance evaluations. There is also extensive discussion of the state-of-the-art technological developments used in: filtering algorithms for digital terrain model generation; strip adjustment of data for registration; co-registration of LiDAR data with imagery; forestry inventory; and surveying. Readers get insight into why LiDAR is the effective tool of choice to collect massive volumes of explicit 3-D data with unprecedented accuracy and simplicity. Compiled by leading experts talking about much of their own pioneering work, this book will give researchers, professionals, and senior students novel ideas to supplement their own experience and practices.
