[Termes IGN] visualisationRésumé : (Editeur)This is a book that recognizes the growing commonality between the concerns of science, government, and business. The examples of GIS people and problems that are scattered through this book have been chosen deliberately to illuminate this commonality, as well as the interplay between organizations and people from different sectors. To differing extents, the five sections of the book develop common concerns with effectiveness and efficiency, by bringing together information from disparate sources, acting within regulatory and ethical frameworks, adhering to scientific principles, and preserving good reputations. This, then, is a book that combines the basics of GIS with the solving of problems which often have no single, ideal solution - the world of business, government, and interdisciplinary, mission-orientated holistic science.
In short, we have tried to create a book that remains attuned to the way the world works now, that understands the ways in which most of us increasingly operate as knowledge workers, and that grasps the need to face complicated issues that do not have ideal solutions. As with the first edition of the book, this is an unusual enterprise and product. It has been written by a multinational partnership, drawing upon material from around the world. One of the authors is an employee of a leading software vendor and two of the other three have had business dealings with ESRI over many years. Moreover, some of the illustrations and examples come from the customers of that vendor. We wish to point out, however, that neither ESRI (nor Wiley) has ever sought to influence our content or the way in which we made our judgments, and we have included references to other software and vendors throughout the book. Whilst our lab classes are part of ESRI's Virtual Campus, we also make reference to similar sources of information in both paper and digital form. [...]Note de contenu :

The aim of this paper is to investigate the potential of using extracted features from a Lidar 3D point cloud for data fusion purpose through an hybrid image segmentation algorithm. The general context of this study is the building reconstruction. We first describe an efficient algorithm for extracting 3D planar primitives from a laser survey over urban areas. It is based on a normal driven random sample consensus (ND-RANSAC) which consists of randomly selecting sets of three points within laser points sharing the same orientation of normal vectors. A robust plane is then estimated with laser points that are likely to belong to the real roof facet. The number of random draws is managed automatically with a statistical analysis of the distribution of normal vectors within an approximation of the Gaussian sphere of the scene. These 3D facets are then introduced into an image segmentation algorithm based on a bottom-up region merging scheme. Initial regions are computed by a watershed transform onto the gradient of the aerial image. Regions adjacency are represented with a Region Adjacency Graph (RAG). Series of successive merging generates a hierarchy of RAGs where edges are mutual inclusion relationships. The process terminated when the entire image is represented as a single region. A cut in the hierarchy provides a desired image partition. Results of the facet extractions as well as of the segmentation are shown and discussed. [Termes IGN] visualisation 3DRésumé : (auteur) Conventional airborne laser scanner systems output the three-dimensional coordinates of the surface location hit by the laser pulse. Data storage capacity and processing speeds available today has made it possible to digitally sample and store the entire reflected waveform, instead of only extracting the coordinates. Research has shown that return waveforms can give even more detailed insights into the vertical structure of surface objects, surface slope, roughness and reflectivity than the conventional systems. One of the most important advantages with registering the waveforms is that it gives the user the possibility to himself define the way range is calculated in post-processing. In this thesis different techniques have been tested to visualize a waveform data set in order to get a better understanding of the waveforms and how they can be used to improve methods for classification of ground objects. A pulse detection algorithm, using the EM algorithm, has been implemented and tested. The algorithm output position and width of the echo pulses. One of the results of this thesis is that echo pulses reflected by vegetation tend to be wider than those reflected by for example a road. Another result is that up till five echo pulses can be detected compared to two echo pulses that the conventional system detects. Note de contenu : Introduction

Note de contenu : 1. Préambule
