[Termes IGN] vision par ordinateurRésumé : (auteur) Landscape reconstructions and deep maps are two major approaches in cultural heritage studies. In general, they require the use of historical visual sources such as maps, graphic artworks, and photographs presenting areal scenes, from which one can extract spatial information. However, photographs, the most accurate and reliable source for scenery reconstruction, are available only from the second half of the 19th century onward. Thus, for earlier periods one can rely only on old artworks. Nevertheless, the accuracy and inclusiveness of old artworks are often questionable and must be verified carefully. In this paper, we use GIScience methods with computer-vision capabilities to interrogate old engravings and drawings as well as to develop a new approach for extracting spatial information from these scenic artworks. We have inspected four old depictions of Jerusalem and Tiberias (Israel) created between the 17th and 19th centuries. Using visibility analysis and a RANSAC algorithm we identified the locations of the artists when they drew the artworks and evaluated the accuracy of their final products. Finally, we re-projected 3D map digitized features onto the drawing canvases, thus embedding features not originally drawn. These were then identified, enabling potential extraction of the spatial information they may reflect. [Termes IGN] zone arideRésumé : (auteur) Increasing environmental and socioeconomic transformations in African drylands are driving land degradation. Using the Composite Land Degradation Index, this study assessed physical, chemical and biological degradation by determining their extent and severity. Palapye, an agro-pastoral region in eastern Botswana was used as a case study. Land degradation maps (status and indicators) were created with data from the field, soil chemical properties and image interpretation. Areas in the vicinity of settlements with Luvisols at elevations between 773 and 893 m were most degraded, implying impacts from human activities. This study developed a comprehensive list of of land degradation indicators for Botswana and created additional symbols for mapping indicators. Creation of these reference data for 2015 will facilitate the monitoring of land degradation in Palapye. The integrative and spatially explicit procedure utilized in this study can be adapted for assessing and validating local-level land degradation baseline and estimates towards operationalizing Land Degradation Neutrality in all countries. [Termes IGN] vingtième siècleRésumé : (auteur) Burgos, in Spain, due to its geographical and historical importance, which made it a politically, militarily, and administratively key city in the configuration of Spain throughout the history of the country, has a large amount of cartographic documentation. Therefore, it has been necessary to carry out different phases of work to collect and analyze the cartographic material available, as well as to specify the maps and plans that would be used to convey and structure the cartography of Burgos during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. However, we must take into account in any study that, despite advances in technology, including machines used to digitize these artifacts, there remains a degree of error, so the display of the map that the researcher observes is not as reliable as it should be. Taking into account the hypothetical character of the accuracy of the maps collected and used in this study, and in order to achieve its goals, a thematic analysis through selection, geolocation, and comparison with the current city map based on different criteria is proposed. Thanks to the rich material, this case can be extrapolated to other cities in the country and the process of making up a map during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries can be known in a deeper way. [Termes IGN] urbanismeRésumé : (auteur) The principal aim of this paper is to present the capabilities of newly developed GIS tools for measurement analysis of urban spatial layouts, using the square grid method. The study of urban morphology and metrology is a multistage process, which involves the metrological analysis of town plans. The main research step is the determination of measurement modules of town layouts, using the square grid. By using GIS software, the authors developed a new tool, named HGIS Tools, which allow to create any number of modular grids with the selected cell size that corresponds to urban units of distance and surface area. When investigating a large number of towns and cities, this offers a significant improvement of the research procedure. The paper presents a test of the tool’s potential on the example of regular medieval towns from the area of the former Teutonic Order state (currently the territory of Poland), diversified in terms of size, genesis and morphometrics. The obtained results confirmed that HGIS Tools allowed to determine the hypothetical measurement module of the layout of the cities studied. The results were consistent with the analyses of other authors carried out with the traditional grid-square methods. The test of the HGIS Tools showed their significant potential in conducting morphometric analyses of spatial arrangements of urban spatial layout on a larger scale. [Termes IGN] volcanRésumé : (auteur) Geologic maps are foundational products for natural hazard assessments but developing them for submarine areas is challenging due to a lack of physical access to the study area. In response, submarine geomorphologic maps are used to provide geologic context and spatial information on landforms and related geo-hazards for risk management. These maps are generated from remotely sensed data, e.g. digital elevation models (DEMs), which introduce unique hurdles to submarine mapping. To address this issue, we produced a workflow for applying planetary geologic mapping methods to submarine data. Using this, we created an onshore-offshore geomorphologic map of the Christiana-Santorini-Kolumbo Volcanic Group, Greece. This product can be used to enhance hazard assessments on Santorini, which is a tourist hot-spot at high risk for volcanically- and seismically-induced hazards. We present this workflow as a tool for generating uniform geomorphologic map products that will aid natural hazard assessments of submarine environments.
