[Termes IGN] visualisation 3DRésumé : (auteur) Conventional airborne laser scanner systems output the three-dimensional coordinates of the surface location hit by the laser pulse. Data storage capacity and processing speeds available today has made it possible to digitally sample and store the entire reflected waveform, instead of only extracting the coordinates. Research has shown that return waveforms can give even more detailed insights into the vertical structure of surface objects, surface slope, roughness and reflectivity than the conventional systems. One of the most important advantages with registering the waveforms is that it gives the user the possibility to himself define the way range is calculated in post-processing. In this thesis different techniques have been tested to visualize a waveform data set in order to get a better understanding of the waveforms and how they can be used to improve methods for classification of ground objects. A pulse detection algorithm, using the EM algorithm, has been implemented and tested. The algorithm output position and width of the echo pulses. One of the results of this thesis is that echo pulses reflected by vegetation tend to be wider than those reflected by for example a road. Another result is that up till five echo pulses can be detected compared to two echo pulses that the conventional system detects. Note de contenu : Introduction

Contrary to conventional intensity-images, which contain information on the intensity of an objects surface, range images store the distance of each point on a surface to the sensor. In order to process these data on a high level of abstraction, new concepts need to be developed, exceeding two-dimensional image analysis. In the context of developing automated three-dimensional computer vision systems, this thesis brings two aspects into focus: partitioning the image data and establishing a correspondence in-between image- and model-data.
This work aims at developing a model-based system for the segmentation and object recognition of three-dimensional objects with curved surfaces using range images. The model data is represented using a CAD-model, providing a mathematical precise and reliable description of arbitrary shapes.
Within this thesis a newly developed method for model-based range image segmentation is presented, using curvature as invariant features. By integrating model information into the segmentation stage, the segmentation process is guided to provide a partitioning corresponding to that of the CAD-model.
The features extracted during segmentation stage are brought into correspondence with the features of the model using a tree-search strategy. The number of possible pairings is reduced due to the fact that model information has been utilized during segmentation. After successful pairing, the three-dimensional transformation of the model onto the object in the scene is computed, completing the object recognition process.
This work provides a way to compute the segmentation of objects in range images containing curved surfaces, detect objects in arbitrary positions and derive the transformation onto a CAD-model. Thereby it contributes to the development of automated systems in the areas of inspection, manufacturing and robotics.

[Termes IGN] télémétrie laser aéroportéIndex. décimale : 35.20 Traitement d'image Résumé : (Auteur) Various methods have been developed to measure the physical presence of objects in a landscape with high positional accuracy, such as Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS). [...] The product of ALS is a cloud of points in 3D space. ALS is capable of delivering very dense and accurate point clouds of a landscape in a relatively short time. [...] However, the automatic detection and interpretation of individual objects remains a challenge. [...] Several algorithms have been developed to automatically detect the bare earth in ALS point clouds. An experimental study of filtering algorithms determined that in flat and uncomplicated landscapes, algorithms tend to do well. Significant differences in accuracies of filtering appear in landscapes containing steep slopes and discontinuties. These differences are a result of the ability of algorithms to preserve discontinuties while detecting large objects. A solution for this problem was determined to lie in the segmentation of ALS point clouds. If segmentation can be achieved in such a manner that all bare earth points are gathered into their own surface segments, then filtering can be done on the basis of surfaces rather than points. This should offer a more reliable classification since topological information can be used in addition to geometric information to classify surface segments. On the strenght of the study, a new segmentation based filtering algorithm was developed. [Termes IGN] reconstruction d'objetRésumé : (auteur) 3D Geographic Information and especially Digital Surface or Terrain Models are becoming essential data for many applications, from risk mapping (avalanches, volcanoes, floods, ..) to town and infrastructure planning with virtual and augmented reality. Automatic surface reconstruction from images with shape from stereo techniques has been a subject of constant attention within remote sensing, photogrammetric, image processing and computer vision communities since the 70's. These techniques had reached a limit when addressing scenes with poor textures, discontinuities and occlusions as encountered in urban areas with HR geospatial imagery. These limitations have faded lately with the rise of new technologies (e.g. high quality aerial digital cameras) and techniques (e.g multi-view processing) and consequently expectations of full (or nearly) automation at short term have become a trend again. Meanwhile, LASER scanning technologies, which provide a reliable description of the imaged scenes in the form of 3D cloud points, have achieved a certain degree of maturity. [Termes IGN] modèle de régressionRésumé : (Auteur) This paper proposes a new filtering method of non-ground measurements from airborne LIDAR data through a Simultaneous Auto-Regressive (SAR) analytical model and exploiting a Foward Search (FS) algorithm. In SAR models, with respect to classical spatial regression models, the correlation among adjacent measured points is taken into account, by considering two quantities for the measured dataset : a coefficient of spatial interaction and matrix of point adjacency (binary digits for regular grids or real numbers for irregular ones). The method has been implemented using Matlab® language and applied either to differently simulated LIDAR datasets or really measured points, these last acquired with an Optech® ALTM 3033 system in the city of Gorizia (North-east Italy).
