[Termes IGN] ruissellementRésumé : (Auteur) Digital elevation models (DEMs) vary in resolution and accuracy by the production method. DEMs with different resolutions and accuracies can generate varied topographic and hydrological features, which can in turn affect predictions by soil erosion models, such as the WEPP (Water Erosion Prediction Project) model. This study investigates the effects of DEMs on deriving topographic and hydrological attributes, and on predicting watershed erosion using WEPP v2006.5. Six DEMs at three resolutions from three sources were prepared for two small forested watersheds located in northern Idaho, USA. These DEMs were used to calculate topographic and hydrological parameters that served as inputs to WEPP. The model results of sediment yields and runoffs were compared with field observations. For both watersheds, DEMs with different resolutions and sources generated varied watershed shapes and structures, which in turn led to different extracted hill slope and channel lengths and gradients, and produced substantially different erosion predictions by WEPP. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) The geographical distribution of a flash flood's occurrence could be an important consideration in assessing its severity and social impacts. In this study, the spatial distribution of survey responses is analysed with respect to features such as the stream network (natural water path), the drainage network, buildings, and catchments. This provides information on both flash flood distribution causes in an urban setting and residents' perceptions of the hazard that would otherwise not be revealed. The study demonstrated the possibility of taking into account people's experience in detecting the location of potential flash flood hazards. It also illustrates the usefulness of GIS-supported spatial analysis of survey results in identifying factors that increase the occurrence of urban flash floods. [Termes IGN] surface imperméableRésumé : (Auteur) Polyline data are often adequate for qualitative representation of roadways for mapping and GIS yet they are often lacking when compared with surface coverages, such as raster data, for performing quantitative environmental simulation modeling where spatial representations are necessary. Widely used land cover raster data, such as the National Land Cover Database (NLCD), were however not collected with sufficient spatial resolution to allow adequate representation of small-scale features such as roadways. Using tools available in ArcGIS software, vector road files were obtained from the Accident Location Information System (ALIS) at the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) and converted to raster data to create spatially explicit representations of impervious area associated with roadways. Comparison of this new coverage with the NLCD results in an increase of approximately 3120 km2 of newly identified impervious coverage for New York State (NYS) not present in the NLCD, representing a 244 percent increase from the transportation class in the NLCD. Of the land cover that would be reclassified to roadway using this methodology, approximately 40 percent would be reclassified from forest land, 31 percent from agricultural land, and 28 percent from the residential land cover classifications. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) WinBasin is a GIS-based watershed analysis system that can automatically calculate depressionless flow directions, delineate watersheds/sub-watersheds, extract realistic drainage networks, and calculate geomorphological indices and hydrological responses from digital elevation models. Several improved algorithms coupled with GIS techniques were proposed for automated watershed analysis. First, different from depression fill-up treatment methods, the depression watershed method coupled with the improved fuzzy c-mean algorithm allows the depression outlet location and flow directions to be determined. Second, by using the GIS-based point-and-click interface coupled with outlet-tracing and headwater-tracing algorithms, watersheds with user-specified outlets and realistic drainage networks can be easily extracted based on the derived flow directions. The analysed results can be exported to vector format for linkage with other GIS software. Third, the geomorphological indices and hydrological responses (width function and geomorphological instantaneous unit hydrograph) in a watershed can also be instantly derived based on the proposed algorithms and the GIS technique.
