[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) Unlike the simplification of independent line features, the generalization of terrain contour is to handle the “line group", which describes the geomorphologic characteristics, such as the terrain valley and ridge. In decision level, the real operation object in the terrain generalization is not the line segment itself but the drainage network contained in the contour representation. This paper presents a method to generalize contour based on the analysis of drainage structure. The first step is to extract the drainage system from the contour lines and build the associations between the valley branch and the bend group of contour lines. The second step is to analyse the properties of drainage tree structure to decide which branch to be removed, and then to perform the geometric elimination of bends. In this study the extraction of drainage system is directly from contour (other than from DTM data) based on the Delaunay triangulation model. Three kinds of tree structure organization are investigated: the hierarchical binary tree representing the bend inclusion relationship contained in each contour line, the planar structure tree describing valley topological relationship and the semantic hierarchical tree representing valley joint level structure from the point of view of hydrology. [Termes IGN] ruissellementRésumé : (Auteur) Rainfall interception by vegetation is an important factor in the water balance. Consequently, rainfall interception should also be an important factor in models simulating processes such as evaporation, transpiration, surface runoff, soil erosion, and crop growth. In practice, however, it is difficult to make quantitative assessments of the spatial and temporal distribution of rainfall interception loss at the catchment level, for instance, and to make these values available as model input. In this paper, we present a novel method using earth observation images to estimate local quantitative values of rainfall interception loss. Leaf Area Index (LAI) and fractional vegetation cover per grid cell are important process variables for rainfall interception. These two variables are estimated from images using spectral vegetation indices and using spectral mixture analysis, respectively. Relations between canopy storage capacity and LAI exist for several plant species and vegetation types, but limited data are found on crops, and more research is needed in this field. The new method is explained and illustrated for a study area in southern France with a variety of land-cover types. It is found to be a valuable and practical approach to quantitatively assess spatial patterns of interception loss for given rainfall events. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Most multiple-flow-direction algorithms (MFDs) use a flow-partition coefficient (exponent) to determine the fractions draining to all downslope neighbours. The commonly used MFD often employs a fixed exponent over an entire watershed. The fixed coefficient strategy cannot effectively model the impact of local terrain conditions on the dispersion of local flow. This paper addresses this problem based on the idea that dispersion of local flow varies over space due to the spatial variation of local terrain conditions. Thus, the flow-partition exponent of an MFD should also vary over space. We present an adaptive approach for determining the flow-partition exponent based on local topographic attribute which controls local flow partitioning. In our approach, the influence of local terrain on flow partition is modelled by a flow-partition function which is based on local maximum downslope gradient (we refer to this approach as MFD based on maximum downslope gradient, MFD-md for short). With this new approach, a steep terrain which induces a convergent flow condition can be modelled using a large value for the flow-partition exponent. Similarly, a gentle terrain can be modelled using a small value for the flow-partition exponent. MFD-md is quantitatively evaluated using four types of mathematical surfaces and their theoretical 'true' value of Specific Catchment Area (SCA). The Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) shows that the error of SCA computed by MFD-md is lower than that of SCA computed by the widely used SFD and MFD algorithms. Application of the new approach using a real DEM of a watershed in Northeast China shows that the flow accumulation computed by MFD-md is better adapted to terrain conditions based on visual judgement. [Termes IGN] zone tropicale humideRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we evaluate the impacts of land-use/cover changes (LUCC) on sediment loads at the outlets of five sub watersheds of the Poyang Lake watershed by integrating remote sensing and GIS with statistical analysis. The intensively farmed watershed is characterized by a mountainous and hilly topography and a rainy climate. The primary goal of this paper is to help a better understanding of land-use/cover change and its driving forces. We discuss spatio temporal variations in rainfall and sediment loads and identify factors contributing to those variations, analyze the comprehensive impacts of land-use/cover change on changing climate and human activities, and conclude that the changing rates of forest cover and climate regimes are primary factors for sediment discharges in the Poyang Lake watershed. Our results suggest that the eco-system still have large capacities to support human activities in the area. [Termes IGN] variable régionaliséeRésumé : (Auteur) Difficulties exist in calculating watershed parameters from raster datasets over large regions because of the excessive computation time involved. A technique is presented which divides a large region into hydrologically distinct subregions, in each of which raster analyses are performed, in order to efficiently process large raster datasets. The results of raster analyses are stored as attributes on the resulting vector data. The vector data are then merged, and appropriate values accumulated to obtain regional parameter values for points of interest along the stream network. The technique, called Raster-Network Regionalization, uses the vector stream network as the backbone for the integration of subregions into a single region. A case study is presented which utilizes the technique to prepare geospatial inputs for the Water Rights Analysis Package simulation model.
