[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Forest dieback is a high risk factor for the sustainability of these ecosystems in the climate change context. Productivity losses and increased defoliation and mortality rates have already been recorded for many tree species worldwide. However, dieback is a process that depends on complex interactions between many biotic and environmental factors acting at different scales, and is thus difficult to address and predict. Our aim was to build tree- and stand-level foliar deficit models integrating biotic and abiotic factors for Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), a species particularly threatened in Europe, and especially in the southeastern part of France. To this end, we quantified foliar deficit in 1740 trees from 87 plots distributed along an environmental gradient. We also measured tree annual radial growth and the abundance of two parasites: the pine processionary moth (Thaumetopoea pityocampa Den. & Schiff.) and mistletoe (Viscum album L.). Topographic, soil, climate and water balance indices were assessed for each plot, together with the stand dendrometric characteristics. Given the large number of environmental factors and the strong correlations between many of them, models were developed using a partial least squares (PLS) regression approach. All the models pointed to a preponderance of the biotic factors (processionary moth and mistletoe) in explaining the intensity of foliar deficit at both tree- and stand- levels. We also show that strong interactions between climate, soil, water balance and biotic factors help to explain the intensity of dieback. Dieback was thus greater in the driest topoedaphic and climatic conditions where the mistletoe and processionary moth were present. This study highlights the need to account for a wide range of biotic and abiotic factors to explain the complex process of forest dieback, and especially the environmental variables that contribute to the water balance on the local scale. The phenomenological modeling approach presented here can be used in other regions and for other species, after a re-calibration and some adaptations to local constraints considering the limited distribution area of some biotic agents. Through measurements of cork-ring width only, strong relationships have been found between cork-ring widths and climate parameters. To our knowledge, cork-ring density, which is an important cork quality attribute, has never been used in any dendroecological study to explore physiological responses of the cork oak to climate change. Contrary to monocultures, quantifying species mixing influence on tree growth suppose a challenge since the presence of two or more species requires to estimate the degree of intra- and inter-specific competition among trees. Moreover, it is well known that aridity can also influence tree growth, especially in the Mediterranean Basin. In the present context of climate change, it is essential to take into account species mixing and aridity uncertainty in the design of sustainable management guidelines for Mediterranean mixed forests. To achieve that, data from Spanish National Forest Inventory was used in this study to fit new mixed-effects basal area increment (BAI) models for 29 two-species compositions in Spain. A wide range of different competition structures (intra-specific, inter-specific, size-symmetric and size-asymmetric) and aridity conditions (in terms of the De Martonne Index) were included and tested into the BAI models. [Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (auteur) The present study develops ArcMap models to implement the following three methods: FAO-56 Penman–Monteith (FAO PM), Hargreaves–Samani (HS) and Hansen, with the former used as a reference. Moreover, three models implementing statistical indices (RMSD, MB, NMB) are also created. The purpose is threefold, as follows: to investigate the variability in the daily mean reference evapotranspiration (ETo) for the Decembers and Augusts during 2016–2019, over Peloponnese, Greece. Furthermore, to investigate the agreement between the methods’ ETo estimates, and examine the former along with MODIS ET (daily) averaged products. The study area is a complex Mediterranean area. Meteorological data from sixty-two stations under the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), and MODIS Terra LST products, have been employed. FAO PM is found sensitive to wind speed and depicts interactions among climate parameters (T, evaporative demand and water availability) in the frame of climate change. The years 2016–2019 are four of the warmest since the preindustrial era. Hargreaves–Samani’s estimations for the Decembers of 2016–2019 were almost identical to MODIS ET, despite their different physical meaning. However, for the Augusts there are considerable discrepancies between the methods’ and MODIS’s estimates, attributed to the higher evaporative demand in the summertime. [Termes IGN] zone semi-arideRésumé : (auteur) An updated assessment of land sensitivity to desertification is essential for comprehensive planning and preparation of action plans. In this study, modified Mediterranean desertification and land use (MEDALUS) method by employing a fuzzy inference system in a GIS environment was used to identify environmentally sensitive areas (ESA) to desertification in the Drader basin in Morocco. Anthropogenic and Biophysical parameters (17 parameters) have been integrated and processed by geographic information systems obtaining climate, water, soil, vegetation and land management quality indexes. The weights for indicators and parameters involved in land desertification were calculated by using analytical hierarchy process (AHP). Then, a fuzzy inference system was employed to create a map for each indexes and ESA map for the study area. The results showed that, fragile and critical areas represent 58% and 2% respectively, while about 21% of the area belongs to the potential areas. The critical areas are primarily characterized by low degree of plant cover, low erosion resistance and low management quality. However, the results revealed that Integrating MCDM-GIS and fuzzy logic in MEDALUS has improved the ability to classify the sensitive areas to desertification at regional scale. The ESA maps have potential as decision tools to prepare and respond to ESAs and causes of land degradation, as such contributing to national climate action and disaster risk reduction sustainable development goals (goals 13 and 15, respectively).
