[Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (Auteur) This paper sheds light on the question of whether globes or maps are best suited to providing an adequate understanding of global phenomena. Drawing upon evidence from the history of cartography, we show how the ancient, medieval and early sixteenth-century mapmakers had already recognized the importance of globes and world maps. An analysis of Ptolemy, Strabo and the negotiations around the Treaty of Tordesillas will demonstrate how our basic assumptions regarding the relationships of globes and world maps have been present for a long time. These assumptions are discussed in the light of current user studies on world maps, for example on distance and area estimations and the issue of peripheral continuity. As we can see from this review of empirical research, designing an appropriate world map is not only an issue of map projection; the edge of a world map also affects the knowledge users may generate. In terms of the importance of ‘globes vs. world maps’, these findings indicate that globes are prominent because of their undistorted, but also seamless visualization of global phenomena. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) Choropleth map animation is widely used to show the development of spatial processes over time. Although animation congruently depicts change, the rapid succession of complex map scenes easily exceeds the human cognitive capacity, causing map users to miss important information. Hence, a reduction of the visual complexity of map animations is desirable. This article builds on research related to complexity reduction of static choropleth maps. It proposes value generalization of choropleth time-series data in space and time, by using a method that adapts to the degree of global spatiotemporal autocorrelation within the dataset. A combination with upstream algorithms for local outlier detection results in less complex map animations focusing on large-scale patterns while still preserving significant local deviations in space and time. An according software application allows for in-depth exploration of the spatial and temporal autocorrelation structures in time-series data and provides control over the whole process of generalization. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Agent-based models tend to integrate more and more data that can deeply impact their outcomes. Among these data, the ones that deal with agent attributes and localization are particularly important, but are very difficult to collect. In order to tackle this issue, we propose a complete generic toolkit called Gen* dedicated to generating spatially explicit synthetic populations from global (census and GIS) data. This article focuses on the localization methods provided by Gen* that are based on regression, geometrical constraints and spatial distributions. The toolkit is applied for a case study concerning the generation of the population of Rouen (France) and shows the capabilities of Gen* regarding population spatialization. [Termes IGN] vingtième siècleRésumé : (Auteur) Although the maps of the Third and Fourth Military Surveys of the Austria–Hungarian Empire were classified, after its dissolution the new countries had access to the topographic maps covering their own territories. Lehmann’s slope hachures were used for representing relief, both at the survey scale and the derived scales. Contour lines were used to plan the hachures, which were the primary method of relief representation; therefore, most of the contour lines were removed from the final map. Following the political and administrative changes, a new organization, the independent Military Mapping Group was established in Hungary in 1919. After developing it into an institute, Hungary started a new topographic survey revising the former Austro-Hungarian 1:25 000 scale topographic maps. The revision changed the relief representation from hachures to contour lines and the language of the map lettering from German to Hungarian.
