[Termes IGN] système expertRésumé : (Auteur) IKONOS 1 x 1 m panchromatic data fused with 4 X 4 m multispectral data were used for residential house detection in three 1 X 1 km study areas of Columbia, South Carolina. One study area contained houses built in the 1940s, another in the 1970s, and another in the 1990s. An expert system was developed to extract individual houses from the imagery. The system employed a data mining algorithm as the core of an automated knowledge acquisition module. Separate knowledge bases were generated for each study area using training samples and the data mining algorithm in two sequential stages. In the first stage, brightness values and NDVI yielded a knowledge base that was used to locate candidate house pixels. In the second stage, region metrics including size, shape, and a series of context variables were employed. Regions of asphalt roads mistakenly identified by the expert system as houses were removed using road buffers. Also, separate knowledge bases were generated both with and without the use of context variables. Each scenario was compared with a point map of photointerpreted (reference) houses. The photointerpreted database was verified against in situ housing counts. There was a strong increasing trend in both machine and photointerpreter accuracy as housing age decreased, with the highest accuracies (79 88%) in the 1990s study area. [Termes IGN] transformation de HoughRésumé : (Auteur) Recent high resolution satellite images provide a valuable new data source for geospatial information acquisition. This paper addresses building extraction from Ikonos images in urban areas. The proposed approach uses the classification results of Ikonos multispectral images to provide approximate location and shape for candidate building objects. Their fine extraction is then carried out in the corresponding panchromatic image through segmentation and squaring. The ECHO classifier is used for supervised classification while the ISODATA algorithm is used for unsupervised classification and subsequent image segmentation. The classification performance is evaluated using the classification confusion matrix, while the final building extraction results are assessed based on the manually delineated results. A building squaring approach based on the Hough transformation is developed that detects and forms the rectilinear building boundaries. A number of sample results are presented to illustrate the approach and demonstrate its efficiency. It is shown that about 64.4 percent of the buildings can be detected, extracted, and accurately formed through this process. Remaining difficulties are high percentage false alarm errors caused by the misclassification of road and building classes as well as occlusion and shadows that may mislead the extraction process. [Termes IGN] solideRésumé : (Auteur) Building extraction based on preestablished models has been recognized as a promising idea for acquiring 3D data for buildings from aerial images. This paper proposes a novel building extraction method developed from the concept of fitting CSG (Constructive Solid Geometry) primitives to aerial images. To be practicable, this method adopts a semiautomatic procedure, carrying out highlevel tasks (building detection, model selection, and attribution) interactively by the operator and performing optimal modelimage fitting automatically with a leastsquares fitting algorithm. Buildings, represented by CSG models, can be reconstructed part by part after fitting each parameterized CSG primitive to the edge pixels of aerial images. Reconstructed building parts can then be combined using CSG Boolean set operators. Consequently, a building is represented by a CSG tree in which each node links two branches of combined parts. This paper demonstrates ten examples of building extraction from aerial photos taken at a scale of 1:5,000 and scanned at a pixel size of 25 1.um. All of the tests were performed in the prototypal system implemented in a CADbased environment cooperated with a number of specially designed programs. The process time for each primitive is about 20 seconds and the successful rate of model-image fitting was about 90 percent. Evaluated with some check points, the fitting accuracy was about 0,3 m horizontally and 1 m vertically. The test results are encouraging and promote the theory of modelbased building extraction. In many disciplines the geometric and nongeometric building information is important to investigate historic processes, to plan and execute redevelopments or to build up Facility Management Systems. Unfortunately in these fields the potential of computerised geodetic and photogrammetric methods is not very often used for the documentation purpose. In many cases the documentation process is done without the participation of geodesy and photogrammetry, especially in projects of historic investigations or heritage conservation. The missing link between the specific evaluation aims of the building related disciplines and the geometric evaluation of geodesy and photogrammetry is one of the main reasons. Until now the interaction between geometry and all other building information is not investigated sufficient and therefore the complex interdependencies could not take into account using modem methods for building documentation. To solve this problem interdisciplinary documentation methods and strategies are developed based on the so-called 'Allgemeine Modelltheorie'. The well-known modem geodetic and photogrammetric surveying methods are evaluated using the main principles of this modelling theory. As a result of this evaluation the surveying methods are adapted to the application in the different fields of building documentation. An interdisciplinary, method combining documentation strategy is developed which guarantees the optimal use of geodetic and photogrammetric methods for building documentation, especially in the field of historic building research.
