[Termes IGN] segmentation sémantiqueRésumé : (auteur) Buildings can be introduced as a fundamental element for forming a city. Therefore, up-to-date building maps have become vital for many applications, including urban mapping and urban expansion analysis. With the development of deep learning, segmenting building footprints from high-resolution remote sensing imagery has become a subject of intense study. Here, a modified version of the U-Net architecture with a combination of pre- and post-processing techniques was developed to extract building footprints from high-resolution aerial imagery and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) imagery. Data pre-processing with the logarithmic correction image enhancing algorithm showed the most significant improvement in the building detection accuracy for aerial images; meanwhile, the CLAHE algorithm improved the most concerning UAV images. This study developed a post-processing technique using polygonizing and polygon smoothing called the Douglas–Peucker algorithm, which made the building output directly ready to use for different applications. The attribute information, land use data, and population count data were applied using two open datasets. In addition, the building area and perimeter of each building were calculated as geometric attributes. [Termes IGN] TéhéranRésumé : (auteur) Natural disasters such as earthquakes and floods together with the urban sprawl conducted by increasing the population make multi-temporal changes in building areas. Destruction, buildings’ renovation, and constructing new buildings are the main changes of the urban areas that should be detected to update three-dimensional city models. The results of performing three-dimensional changes detecting of high altitude objects such as buildings are more close to reality than the two-dimensional methods. In this study, a three-dimensional changes detection method is proposed based on digital elevation models (DEMs). In the first step of this proposed method, the normalized digital surface model (nDSM) is generated for timely datasets. Then, object-based image analysis is utilized by performing segmentation followed by the structural classification of DEMs. Differencing and comparing the multi-temporal classification maps as the third step of the proposed algorithm led to analyzing the occurred changes. The obtained results are evaluated in an urban area in Tehran, Iran, in a 9-year time interval. These results represent −9.7% decreasing rate in low-rise buildings and also −1.37% decreases in the ground. Moreover, the class of high-rise buildings increased for +16.4% which conforms to making new constructions in addition to the renovation of low-rise buildings. According to the area analyzing of the changes, 4.8% of the investigated study area has new constructions, 3.05% has buildings’ renovation, and 3.89% has destruction in that 9-year period. [Termes IGN] surface imperméableRésumé : (Auteur) Urban spectral indices have made promising improvements in the last two decades in urban land use land cover studies through mapping, estimation, change detection, time-series analyzing, urban dynamics, monitoring, modeling, and so on. Remote sensing spectral indices are unsupervised, unbiased, rapid, scalable, and quantitative in information extraction. Hence, we aimed to summarize the most relevant urban spectral indices by focusing on multispectral, thermal, and nighttime lights indices. We use the search terms "urban index", "built-up index", "normalized difference built-up area (NDBI )", "impervious surface index", and "spectral urban index" to collect relevant literature from the "Web of Science Core Collection" database. We found that all urban spectral indices developed since 2003, except NDBI. This review will help understand the applications of urban spectral indices, the selection of indices based on available spectral bands, and their merits and demerits. [Termes IGN] segmentation sémantiqueRésumé : (auteur) Semantic segmentation models based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have gained much attention in relation to remote sensing and have achieved remarkable performance for the extraction of buildings from high-resolution aerial images. However, the issue of limited generalization for unseen images remains. When there is a domain gap between the training and test data sets, the CNN-based segmentation models trained by a training data set fail to segment buildings for the test data set. In this article, we propose segmentation networks based on a domain adaptive transfer attack (DATA) scheme for building extraction from aerial images. The proposed system combines the domain transfer and the adversarial attack concepts. Based on the DATA scheme, the distribution of the input images can be shifted to that of the target images while turning images into adversarial examples against a target network. Defending adversarial examples adapted to the target domain can overcome the performance degradation due to the domain gap and increase the robustness of the segmentation model. Cross-data set experiments and ablation study are conducted for three different data sets: the Inria aerial image labeling data set, the Massachusetts building data set, and the WHU East Asia data set. Compared with the performance of the segmentation network without the DATA scheme, the proposed method shows improvements in the overall intersection over union (IoU). Moreover, it is verified that the proposed method outperforms even when compared with feature adaptation (FA) and output space adaptation (OSA).
