[Termes IGN] varianceRésumé : (Auteur) This paper describes a consensus‐set estimation for building roof‐plane detection using a stratified random sample consensus (sRANSAC) algorithm applied to point clouds acquired by laser scanning systems. The main idea is to use one initial classification to generate consensus‐set candidates to optimise the sampling mechanism compared to the original RANSAC. The initial classification is performed using mathematical morphology to filter ground returns and estimate local variance information to detect potential planar regions. Thus, the algorithm can prioritise points within planar segments and the number of iterations can be estimated dynamically from available data. The results based on experiments using five different lidar datasets indicate that the proposed method reduces the number of computations for building roof‐plane detection and also improves accuracy compared to RANSAC. [Termes IGN] toitRésumé : (Auteur) Laser scanning generates a point cloud from which geometries can be extracted, but most methods struggle to do this automatically, especially for the entirety of an architecturally complex building (as opposed to that of a single façade). To address this issue, this paper introduces the Improved Slicing Method (ISM), an innovative and computationally-efficient method for three-dimensional building segmentation. The method is also able to detect opening boundaries even on roofs (e.g. chimneys), as well as a building’s overall outer boundaries using a local density analysis technique. The proposed procedure is validated by its application to two architecturally complex, historic brick buildings. Accuracies of at least 86% were achieved, with computational times as little as 0.53 s for detecting features from a data set of 5.0 million points. The accuracy more than rivalled the current state of the art, while being up to six times faster and with the further advantage of requiring no manual intervention or reliance on a priori information. [Termes IGN] toitRésumé : (auteur) The reconstruction of urban areas suffers from the dilemma of modeling urban structures in a generic or specific way, thus being too unspecific or too restrictive. One approach to overcome this dilemma is to model and to instantiate buildings as arbitrarily shaped polyhedra and to recognize man-made structures in a subsequent stage by geometric reasoning. Thus, the existence of unconstrained boundary representations for buildings is assumed. To stay generic and to avoid the use of templates for pre-defined building primitives, no assumptions for the buildings' outlines and the planar roof areas are made. Typically, roof areas are derived interactively or in an automatic process based on given point clouds or digital surface models. Due to the measurement process and the assumption of planar boundaries, these planar faces are uncertain. Thus, a stochastic geometric reasoning process with statistical testing is appropriate to detected man-made structures followed by an adjustment to enforce the deduced geometric constraints. Unfortunately, city models usually do not feature information about the uncertainty of geometric entities. We present an approach to specify the uncertainty of the planes corresponding to the planar patches, i.e., polygons bounding a building, analytically. This paves the way to conduct the reasoning process with just a few assumptions. We describe and demonstrate the approach with real data. [Termes IGN] toitRésumé : (Auteur) As the rate of urbanization continues to accelerate, the utilization of solar energy in buildings plays an increasingly important role in sustainable urban development. For this purpose, we propose a LiDAR-based joint approach for calculating the solar irradiance incident on roofs and façades of buildings at city scale, which includes a methodology for calculating solar irradiance, the validation of the proposed method, and analysis of its application. The calculation of surface irradiance on buildings may then inform photovoltaic power generation simulations, architectural design, and urban energy planning. Application analyses of the proposed method in the experiment area found that: (1) Global and direct irradiations vary significantly by hour, day, month and season, both following the same trends; however, diffuse irradiance essentially remains unchanged over time. (2) Roof irradiation, but not façade irradiation, displays distinct time-dependent patterns. (3) Global and direct irradiations on roofs are highly correlated with roof aspect and slope, with high global and direct irradiations observed on roofs of aspect 100–250° and slopes of 0–60°, whereas diffuse irradiation on roofs is only affected by roof slope. (4) The façade of a building receives higher levels of global and direct irradiations if facing southeast, south, and southwest; however, diffuse irradiation remains constant regardless of façade orientation.
