ASWH is underestimated by 0.20 m, the root-mean-square error (RMSE) is less than 0.30 m, the Scatter Index is less than 20%, and the correlation coefficient is greater than 0.90. Further, at three locations, the examination of the above statistics showed that the bias and RMSE is high during the southwest monsoon season compared with the Northeast monsoon. Scatter Index showed only slight variation (14–18%) for different ranges of SWH. The response of the daily average gridded ASWH data during extreme conditions (cyclones) in the vicinity of the buoy locations is poor at all compared buoy locations. The gridded ASWH from different satellite missions provided by AVISO can be used for basin scale validation experiments of the wave model and for climatological studies in the Indian Ocean, except during cyclone conditions. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Syn-rift Neogene deposits, composed of a 650 m thick volcano-sedimentary succession, crop out at the foot of the escarpment close to the village of Dogali, near Massawa (NE Eritrea). These deposits are related to the first stage of the Red Sea spreading. This work aims at mapping in detail this succession using remote sensing optical images integrated with ancillary data and ground truth information in a Geographic Information System. Optical images are usually effective in lithological discrimination in arid environment and fill the requirements of low-cost, rapid and accurate regional mapping. Photo-interpretation ofLandsat Thematic Mapper image was carried out in a test area of 500 km2 and Quickbird satellite images were used to detail a subset of 50 km2. The satellite images have been processed through radiometric enhancement, principal components analysis and band ratios. Ancillary data and evidences from field surveys supported the photo-interpretation. Rock samples, photos and observations collected during previous test campaigns provided interpre-tation keys of the satellite images. A preliminary scheme of the lithological units has been drawn from the Landsat image. The Proterozoic metamor-phic complex of the basement and the sedimentary fades of Lower Dogali Formation were mapped at scale ] :80,000. Evidences of laterites and base-ment weathering were also detected. A detailed analysis of sedimentary fades of the Lower Dogali Formation was then carried out using the Quickbird images at scale 1:10,000. The results of the photointerpretation of remotely sensed data confirm that the deposition of the Lower Dogali Formation is linked to the first stage of the Red Sea spreading and main considerations on the mecha--nisms and the evolution of different stages have been underlined. Although the next field campaign is going to endorse the remotely sensed data, these preliminary results give evidence of the contribu-tion of satellite images to the knowledge of the geo-logical setting of a poorly mapped area in arid environment. Note de contenu : Introduction

[Vedettes matières IGN] AltimétrieRésumé : (Auteur) The 26 December 2004 magnitude 9 earthquake off Sumatra provided the first examples of travelling tsunami waves in mid-ocean clearly detected by satellite altimetry. The earthquake was the largest since satellite altimetry started in the 1970s and gave peak-to-trough wave heights in mid-ocean of over a metre. The tsunami was detected by three of the four altimeters presently giving sea surface height information. Each detected the spreading front twice, as it moved south-westwards into the Indian Ocean and as it moved northwards into the Bay of Bengal. They also detected the disturbed region closer to the epicentre that expands with the slower velocities of higher-frequency waves. Although the plate rupture is estimated to extend over about 1300 km in a north/south direction, the satellite observations appear consistent with a smaller generation area towards the south of this rupture zone. Fronts observed in the Indian Ocean show a positive first crest. Those observed in the Bay of Bengal are of smaller amplitude and appear to show a first negative first crest (trough). The structure in the Indian Ocean front observed by Jason-1 suggests the possible presence of a shorter-wavelength negative component superimposed on the positive crest.
