[Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (auteur) L’omniprésence des tâches d’orientation et de navigation dans la vie de tous les jours demande des supports cartographiques de grande qualité afin d’aider les gens à résoudre ces tâches de la meilleure façon possible. Les cartes modernes devraient non seulement intégrer les techniques de visualisation et les approches de conception modernes, mais aussi des connaissances sur les processus cognitifs des utilisateurs des cartes. Des études passées sur la cartographie cognitive et sur la cognition spatiale ont identifié les grilles comme des éléments cartographiques pertinents pour améliorer la précision des représentations cognitives de l’espace géographique. Les lignes des grilles forment des cellules et ces cellules subdivisent l’espace cartographié en différentes régions. Ces régions semblent contribuer à une catégorisation des contenus représentés cartographiquement. L’organisation en catégorie de la carte fournit une structure spatiale subordonnée qui peut améliorer la mémorisation de la localisation des objets. Un paramètre important qui influence la catégorisation est la distance entre les lignes de la grille (espacement / séparation). Une étude précédente suggérait d’utiliser un espacement de 5cm (en distance papier) comme étant une distance adaptée pour une bonne performance de mémorisation de la localisation des objets sur les cartes topographiques. En se basant sur le paradigme de mémorisation / récupération utilisé lors des études expérimentales en psychologie cognitive, les expériences présentées dans ce papier reprennent cette valeur et cherche à trouver la valeur idéale d’espacement des grilles pour la mémorisation de la localisation des objets. Les résultats montrent que les résultats précédents peuvent être étendus. Les résultats permettent de proposer une grille avec un espacement idéal entre 6,5 et 7,5 cm. Ces valeurs d’espacement aident à réduire les erreurs de distorsions spatiales dans la mémorisation de la localisation des objets, en particulier dans le cas des cartes ayant une faible quantité de détails visuels. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Key message : Post-stratification based on remotely sensed data is an efficient method in estimating regional-level results in the operational National Forest Inventory. It also enables calculating the results accurately for smaller areas than with the default method of using the field plots only.
Context : The utilization of auxiliary information in survey sampling through model-assisted estimation or post-stratification has gained popularity in forest inventory recently. However, post-stratification at a large scale involves practical concerns such as the availability of auxiliary data independent of the sample at hand, and a large number of variables for which the results are needed.
Aims : We assessed the efficiency of two different types of post-stratification, either post-stratifying for each variable of interest separately or using one post-stratification for all variables, compared to the estimation based on the field sample plots only. In addition, we examined the precision of area and volume estimates, and the efficiency of post-stratification at different spatial scales.
Methods : For post-stratification, we used the volume maps based on Landsat satellite imagery, digital map data, and the sample plot data of the previous inventory. The efficiencies of post-stratifications based on the mean volume and the mean volumes by tree species were compared.
Results : In estimating the total volume, the relative efficiency of post-stratification compared to field plot based estimation was 1.54–3.54 over the provinces in South Finland. In estimating the volumes by tree species groups, the relative efficiency was 0.93–2.39. The gain with a separate stratification compared to the stratification based on total mean volume for all variables was at largest 0.69. In the small test areas, the relative standard errors of the total volume estimates decreased on average by 33% by using post-stratification instead of sample plots only. The mean relative efficiency was 2.36.
Conclusion : The utilization of an old forest resources map and post-stratification based on the mean volume is an operational approach for the National Forest Inventory. Post-stratification also enables calculating the results accurately for markedly smaller areas than with the field plots only. Such place names may not be recorded in existing gazetteers, due to their vernacular nature, relative insignificance to a gazetteer covering a large area (e.g. the entire world), recent establishment (e.g. the name of a newly-opened shopping center) or other reasons. While not always recorded, local place names play important roles in many applications, from supporting public participation in urban planning to locating victims in disaster response. In this paper, we propose a computational framework for harvesting local place names from geotagged housing advertisements. We make use of those advertisements posted on local-oriented websites, such as Craigslist, where local place names are often mentioned. The proposed framework consists of two stages: natural language processing (NLP) and geospatial clustering. The NLP stage examines the textual content of housing advertisements and extracts place name candidates. The geospatial stage focuses on the coordinates associated with the extracted place name candidates and performs multiscale geospatial clustering to filter out the non-place names. We evaluate our framework by comparing its performance with those of six baselines. We also compare our result with four existing gazetteers to demonstrate the not-yet-recorded local place names discovered by our framework. [Termes IGN] style cartographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This article deals with the cartometric analysis of various seventeenth-century urban maps of the city of Cadiz (Spain), from among which the so-called Vista Arámburu and the map belonging to the atlas of the Marquis of Heliche, discovered in the Krigsarkivet (Military Archive) of Stockholm, stand out for their uniqueness. These hitherto relatively unknown documents present evidence of an evolution of cartographic style towards greater topographic accuracy and hence cannot just be considered as simple drawings. In this seventeenth-century period of transition, the cartography of the city evolved from sixteenth-century aerial-view perspectives to the exhaustive planimetric maps of the eighteenth century, made by Spanish and French Military Corps of Engineers. These documents hold great historical value, not only due to the importance of Cadiz during the Modern Age but also because these maps constitute a graphic testimony of the fortification and growth of the city in this period.
