Tree height is widely used to assess a site’s productivity both in forest ecology research and forest management. Thus, a precise height measure represents a necessary step for the estimation of carbon storage at the local, national, and global scales. In this context, error in height measurement necessarily affects the accuracy of related estimates. Ordinarily, forest height is surveyed by ground sampling adopting hypsometers. The latter suffers from many errors mainly related to the correct tree apex identification (not always well visible in dense stands) and to the measurement process itself. In this work, a statistically based operative method for estimating height measurement uncertainty (σH) was proposed using the variance propagation law. Some simulations were performed involving several combinations of terrain slope, tree height, and survey distances by modelling the σH behaviour and its sensitivity to such parameters. Results proved that σH could vary between 0.5 m and up to 20 m (worst case). Sensitivity analysis shows that terrain slopes and distance poorly affect σH, while angles are the main drivers of height uncertainty. Finally, to give a practical example of such deductions, tree height uncertainty was mapped at the global scale using Google Earth Engine and summarized per forest biomes. Results proved that tropical biomes have higher uncertainty (from 1 m to 4 m) while shrublands and tundra have the lowest (under 1 m). [Termes IGN] zone inondableRésumé : (auteur) Flooding is a major and recurring natural disaster in Northeast Penang, Malaysia. The ability to effectively identify flood hazard areas represents an important part of flood risk analysis and management. There is a need for a structured study that incorporates stakeholders’ inputs such as the multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) model to delineate flood-prone locations to support the management and mitigation measures of flooding in this area. Previous studies have compared the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and fuzzy AHP methods in flood hazard mapping. Therefore, this study proposes to test the predicting capability of three MCDM models in the determination of flood-prone areas: the AHP, triangular fuzzy AHP (TF-AHP), and trapezoidal fuzzy AHP (TZF-AHP) in this area. The methodology applies nine flood-causative factors (FCFs) which include drainage density, elevation, land use, slope, rainfall, flood depth, distance from rivers, lithology, and distance from inundation. The resulting flood hazard maps showed a closer similarity between the TF-AHP and TZ-AHP methods compared to the AHP method for flood hazard mapping. The sensitivity analysis indicated that the AHP was more accurate than the fuzzy AHP models based on the weight estimation. The validation results showed that 100%, 93%, and 93% of the actual flood events occurred in the ‘moderate’ to ‘very high’ flood hazard areas for the AHP, TF-AHP, and TZF-AHP, respectively. Overall results showed the accuracy of all three models in modeling flood hazard areas. Therefore, the findings can be adopted as a tool in making informed and accurate policies about flood management for effective climate mitigation decision making. [Termes IGN] visualisation de donnéesRésumé : (auteur) In today’s information age, thematic maps increasingly appear in all kinds of media and publications and many users control the map design process themselves. Due to wider prevalence of data, teaching the principles of thematic cartography is gaining interest. Students need to understand the power of thematic maps to reveal geographic patterns and relations, and should learn how to create convincing maps. In this paper, student maps featuring socio-economic themes for Northern South Africa show how attention can be drawn to information hidden in data. Seven students each prepared a black-and-white traditional thematic map and a coloured infographics-style map, which were later enhanced by a well-trained cartographer. Through these maps, we demonstrate that the power of thematic maps depends on the chosen cartographic representation and that diversity of visualization options matters when telling a story with a map. Discussion of the maps illustrates the relevance and challenge of thematic maps for society, the need to develop map literacy, and the possibility to accommodate new visualization trends, like narrative data visualization, in thematic cartography teaching. The emphasis should be on using multivariate data and allowing infographics characteristics, thus fostering creativity and preparing students for a role in interdisciplinary data journalism teams. The discovery of generalized latent representations from such data are however under researched within the social sciences. As such, this paper exploits advances in machine learning to implement a new method of capturing measures of urban context from multispectral satellite imagery at a very small area level through the application of a convolutional autoencoder (CAE). The utility of outputs from the CAE is enhanced through the application of spatial weighting, and the smoothed outputs are then summarised using cluster analysis to generate a typology comprising seven groups describing salient patterns of differentiated urban context. The limits of the technique are discussed with reference to the resolution of the satellite data utilised within the study and the interaction between the geography of the input data and the learned structure. The method is implemented within the context of Great Britain, however, is applicable to any location where similar high resolution multispectral imagery are available.
