[Termes IGN] urbanismeRésumé : (auteur) The recent growth of high-resolution spatial data, especially in developing urban environments, is enabling new approaches to civic activism, urban planning and the provision of services necessary for sustainable development. A special area of great potential and urgent need deals with urban expansion through informal settlements (slums). These neighborhoods are too often characterized by a lack of connections, both physical and socioeconomic, with detrimental effects to residents and their cities. Here, we show how a scalable computational approach based on the topological properties of digital maps can identify local infrastructural deficits and propose context-appropriate minimal solutions. We analyze 1 terabyte of OpenStreetMap (OSM) crowdsourced data to create worldwide indices of street block accessibility and local cadastral maps and propose infrastructure extensions with a focus on 120 Low and Middle Income Countries (LMICs) in the Global South. We illustrate how the lack of physical accessibility can be identified in detail, how the complexity and costs of solutions can be assessed and how detailed spatial proposals are generated. We discuss how these diagnostics and solutions provide a multiscalar set of new capabilities—from individual neighborhoods to global regions—that can coordinate local community knowledge with political agency, technical capability, and further research. [Termes IGN] peuplement mélangéRésumé : (auteur) The aim of this study is to produce updated forest map of the Bogdkhan Mountain, Mongolia using multitemporal Sentinel-2A images. The target area has highly mixed forest types and it is very difficult to differentiate the fuzzy boundaries among different forest types. To extract the forest class information, an object-based classification technique is applied and a rule-base to separate the mixed classes is developed. The rule-base uses a hierarchy of rules describing different conditions under which the actual classification has to be performed. To compare the result of the developed method with a result of a pixel-based approach, a Bayesian maximum likelihood classification is applied. The final result indicates overall accuracy of 90.87% for the object-based classification, while for the pixel-based approach it is 79.89%. Overall, the research indicates that the object-based method that uses a thoroughly defined segmentation and a well-constructed rule-base can significantly improve the classification of mixed forest types and produce of a reliable forest map. [Termes IGN] vergerRésumé : (auteur) Potential of Sentinel-1A SAR data was assessed for the time-series analysis of orchard biophysical parameters and crop system. The study revealed characteristics variations in the backscatter coefficient with respect to time and polarization for age in VH polarization than in VV and ratio of VV/VH polarization showing discrimination of young orchard particularly in VV polarization. The parameter of the orchard (age, DBH, canopy radius and visual height) shows a promising relationship with backscatter coefficient. Out of several regression models, VV channel responds with a fair regression coefficient of 0.54, 0.52, 0.48 and 0.44 for height with rmse of 0.5, 1.3, 0.7 and 0.6 for age, DBH, canopy radius and visual height, respectively. Multiple regression coefficient of 0.61 was observed for January 2018 in VV polarization as best date for study. These empirical relationships have potential for the inverse backscatter modelling. [Termes IGN] vingtième siècleRésumé : (auteur) At the beginning of the twentieth century, a British mapping team led by Captain S. F. Newcombe surveyed and mapped the Negev region, Sinai, and western Jordan. The map was mainly produced for military use. Consequently, it included a network of branched routes, water supplies and facilities, and topographic contours. This study used this map to examine the development of routes in the Negev region between the beginning of and until the end of the twentieth century. First, the individual sheets comprising the study area were pieced together and the accuracy of the map was evaluated. The accuracy found on the Newcombe map was 0.76 mm on the map scale, equivalent to 100.3 m. Route development during the twentieth century was then evaluated by comparing the routes digitized from the Newcombe map to digitized routes on a late twentieth-century map. The results do not reveal tremendous changes in path, shape, or number of routes. Instead, they merely indicate the natural development in their quality. This Historical GIS-based approach provided a useful technique for analyzing and comparing the line segments extracted from historical and modern maps. The implemented approach may also serve other geographical or historical studies aiming to examine the development of branched networks throughout history. [Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) The intensification of agriculture has resulted in more homogeneous landscapes and declines of many species associated with farmland or other semi-natural open habitats. In parallel, forestry has also intensified causing declines in many species associated with old-growth forests. While intensive forestry negatively affects forest species, it inadvertently creates new habitats such as clear-cuts, which attracts some farmland species. To understand the potential of clear-cuts as alternative habitat for farmland species, we need to know what makes clear-cuts attractive and whether they are suitable for reproduction and survival. We reviewed literature on the occurrence of farmland birds and butterflies in forest clear-cuts and synthesise the current knowledge on factors and characteristics affecting their occurrence.
Many farmland birds and butterflies do indeed use clear-cuts, and have been found in clear-cuts up to ten years after felling. Clear-cut characteristics of importance include age, size, retention structures, land-use history and landscape composition. However, direct measures of resource abundance such as food and hostplants are often lacking. In addition to the potential benefit of individual clear-cuts, the total clear-cut area in forested regions is often large. Together with the fact that clear-cuts may be occupied by farmland species for several years, the potential of clear-cuts as alternative habitat for farmland biodiversity is substantial. Clear-cuts with a history as meadows, the presence of species of conservation importance, or shorter distance to farmland could for example be motivations for focusing conservation efforts on farmland species instead of forest species. Gaining more knowledge on how farmland species use clear-cuts, and what characteristics they depend on, could help inform management guidelines.
