[Termes IGN] parcoursRésumé : (Auteur) The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for natural resource applications has increased considerably in recent years due to their greater availability, the miniaturization of sensors, and the ability to deploy a UAV relatively quickly and repeatedly at low altitudes. We examine in this paper the potential of using a small UAV for rangeland inventory, assessment and monitoring. Imagery with a ground resolved distance of 8 cm was acquired over a 290 ha site in southwestern Idaho. We developed a semiautomated orthorectification procedure suitable for handling large numbers of small-footprint UAV images. The geometric accuracy of the orthorectified image mosaics ranged from 1.5 m to 2 m. We used object-based hierarchical image analysis to classify imagery of plots measured concurrently on the ground using standard rangeland monitoring procedures. Correlations between imageand ground-based estimates of percent cover resulted in r-squared values ranging from 0.86 to 0.98. Time estimates indicated a greater efficiency for the image-based method compared to ground measurements. The overall classification accuracies for the two image mosaics were 83 percent and 88 percent. Even under the current limitations of operating a UAV in the National Airspace, the results of this study show that UAVs can be used successfully to obtain imagery for rangeland monitoring, and that the remote sensing approach can either complement or replace some ground-based measurements. We discuss details of the UAV mission, image processing and analysis, and accuracy assessment. [Termes IGN] trajectoire (véhicule non spatial)Résumé : (Auteur) More and more mobile objects are now equipped with sensors allowing real time monitoring of their movements. Nowadays, the data produced by these sensors can be stored in spatio-temporal databases. The main goal of this article is to perform a data mining on a huge quantity of mobile object's positions moving in an open space in order to deduce its behaviour. New tools must be defined to ease the detection of outliers. First of all, a zone graph is set up in order to define itineraries. Then, trajectories of mobile objects following the same itinerary are extracted from the spatio-temporal database and clustered. A statistical analysis on this set of trajectories lead to spatio-temporal patterns such as the main route and spatio-temporal channel followed by most of trajectories of the set. Using these patterns, unusual situations can be detected. Furthermore, a mobile object's behaviour can be defined by comparing its positions with these spatio-temporal patterns. In this article, this technique is applied to ships' movements in an open maritime area. Unusual behaviours such as being ahead of schedule or delayed or veering to the left or to the right of the main route are detected. A case study illustrates these processes based on ships' positions recorded during two years around the Brest area. This method can be extended to almost all kinds of mobile objects (pedestrians, aircrafts, hurricanes, ...) moving in an open area. [Termes IGN] vitesseRésumé : (Auteur) A rapid real-time adjustment scheme is proposed for improving the precision of the conventional short-base line (SBL) positioning fix system used by submarines and other underwater vehicles. In the proposed approach, an initial position estimate is obtained by solving the conventional SBL tracking equations of the submarine given the assumptions of a constant speed of sound in water and a straight-line propagation path. In the first stage of the real-time adjustment procedure, this initial estimate is corrected using an iterative computation scheme based on a 3D geometry model. The improved position estimate is then used to compute a new, more accurate value of the speed of sound in water. Finally, in the second stage of the real-time adjustment procedure, the corrected speed of sound in water and the discrepancy between the original and corrected position estimates obtained in the first adjustment procedure are applied to update the coordinates of the submarine based on the second signal received from the pinger. The numerical results show that the proposed real-time adjustment system yields a significant improvement in the accuracy of the positioning fix estimates compared to those obtained from the conventional SBL method or the SBL method with the first adjustment procedure only.
