[Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (auteur) This research paper proposes a new five-step protocol to enhance the result of existing cloud removal algorithms using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) daily snow cover products (SCPs). The study has been carried out for the upper Bhagirathi basin (up to Maneri Hydropower Project) located in the Western Himalaya. Gafurov and Bárdossy test employed to validate the performance of the proposed method, followed by comparing with the field observed snow cover duration (SCD) data. The result shows that the mean overall accuracy of the proposed method for cloud removal is about ∼95%. However, the cloud removal method by Gafurov and Bardossy also achieved similar mean overall accuracy but with the higher variability within the individual images as compared with the variability within the results obtained by the proposed method. SCD computed from cloud removed SCPs matched significantly with the field observed SCD for a point location, supporting the accuracy achieved by the cloud removal method. This study also examines the spatiotemporal variability of the snow cover in the study area during the past 18 years (2000–2018). During the observation period, no specific trend was observed for annual maximum snow cover, while yearly minimum snow cover in the basin showed an increasing trend since 2010. Seasonally, December and June month witnessed significant changes. December experienced a declining trend in snow cover between 3000–6000 m a.s.l. covering 88% of the basin area, whereas, June showed an increasing trend between 4500 to 6000 m (a.s.l.). This elevation range covers 61% of the basin area, including core 86% of the glacier area within the basin. September and October experienced the highest inter-annual snow cover variability. Maximum snow cover month of February and minimum snow cover month of August experienced the least variability. The present study suggests significant elevation-dependent increasing as well as the decreasing trend in the snow cover with seasonal contrast, which may affect the glaciers as well as the hydrological behavior of the basin. [Termes IGN] surveillance géologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The continuous monitoring of land surface movement over time is of paramount importance for assessing landslide triggering factors and mitigating landslide hazards. This research focuses on measuring horizontal and vertical surface displacement due to a devastating landslide event in the west-facing slope of the Rajamala Hills, induced by intense rainfall. The landslide occurred in Pettimudi, a tea-plantation village of the Idukki district in Kerala, India, on August 6–7, 2020. The persistent-scatterer synthetic aperture radar interferometry (PSInSAR ) technique, along with the Stanford Method for Persistent Scatterers (StaMPS), was applied to investigate the land surface movement over time. A stack of 20 Sentinel-1A single-look complex images (19 interferograms) acquired in descending passes was used for PSInSAR processing. The line-of-sight (LOS ) displacement in long time series, and hence the average LOS velocity, was measured at each measurement-point location. The mean LOS velocity was decomposed into horizontal east–west (EW ) and vertical up–down velocity components. The results show that the mean LOS, EW, and up–down velocities in the study area, respectively, range from –18.76 to +11.88, –10.95 to +6.93, and –15.05 to +9.53 mm/y, and the LOS displacement ranges from –19.60 to +19.59 mm. The displacement values clearly indicate the instability of the terrain. The time-series LOS displacement trends derived from the applied PSInSAR technique are very useful for providing valuable inputs for disaster management and the development of disaster early-warning systems for the benefit of local residents. The importance of flood maps in governing strategies for flood risk management is of prime importance. Flood inundation maps are considered dependable output generated from simulation results from hydraulic models in evaluating flood risks. In the present work, a continuous hydrologic-hydraulic model has been implemented for mapping the flood, caused by the Baitarani River of Odisha, India. A rainfall time-series data were fed into the hydrologic model and the runoff generated from the model was given as an input into the hydraulic model. The study was performed using the HEC-HMS model and the FLO-2D model to map the extent of flooding in the area. Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission (SRTM) 90 m Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data, Land use/Land cover map (LULC), soil texture data of the basin area were used to compute the topographic and hydraulic parameters. Flood inundation was simulated using the FLO-2D model and based on the flow depth, hazard zones were specified using the MAPPER tool of the hydraulic model. Bhadrak District was found to be the most hazard-prone district affected by the flood of the Baitarani River. The result of the study exhibited the hydraulic model as a utile tool for generating inundation maps. An approach for assessing the risk of flooding and proper management could help in mitigating the flood. The automated procedure for mapping and the details of the study can be used for planning flood disaster preparedness in the worst affected area. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) In the time of ongoing climate change and the increasing area of post-mining landscape, the successful afforestation of reclamation sites by suitable adaptive tree species is gaining in importance. One of possible ways may be the use of introduced tree species, which is, however, a controversial topic in relation to risks for forest management and nature conservation. The objective of this study was to comprehensively evaluate the forest stands (age 48 years) of 9 introduced and 3 native coniferous tree species in lowland post-mining coal site of the Czech Republic. The research was focused on production potential, health status, resistance to climate change, carbon sequestration, biodiversity and soil properties. The highest timber production, biomass and carbon stock (49–95% above average), was observed in case of Pinus sylvestris, P. nigra and Pseudotsuga menziesii. On the other hand, unsuitable habitat, insect and pathogens caused poor health status and extremely low production parameters (by 55–62% than average) in Pinus strobus and P. rotundata. In terms of climate, Pinus sylvestris, P. nigra, Larix decidua, Pseudotsuga menziesii and Picea omorika were the most resistance tree species in relation to climatic extremes. Conversely, Pinus rotundata, P. strobus, P. ponderosa, Picea pungens and P. abies were very sensitive to climate events, especially to the lack of precipitation in vegetation period with synergism of high temperature. In terms of soil parameters, the content of plant available nutrients (K, Ca, Mg) was adequate except P deficiency. The highest soil reaction was detected for Pinus nigra and P. sylvestris (pH 6.9–7.1) compared to Picea mariana (pH 4.8). The benefits of “suitable” introduced tree species (Pinus nigra, Pseudotsuga menziesii) are high timber production potential and good adaptation and mitigation of the changing climate; however, native tree species (Pinus sylvestris, Larix decidua) can provide better environmental benefits on reclamation sites.
