[Termes IGN] précipitationRésumé : (Auteur) Five years of data from 1998 to 2002 of TRMM-3B42 version 5 (V5), 3B43 V5, 3B42 version 6 (V6), 3B43 V6, and the Bangladesh Meteorological Department rain-gauge network were analyzed to understand the climatic characteristics of rainfall over Bangladesh. TRMM-PR 2A25 data were used to obtain the precipitation field of the convection events. Daily rainfall measured by TRMM V5 3B42 was compared to that of rain-gauge values from pre-monsoon to post-monsoon months (March–November). The time sequence patterns of the daily rainfall determined by the V5 3B42 and those from rain gauges were remarkably similar. The spatial and temporal averages of rainfall revealed good estimations of rainfall: during March to November, the V5 3B42- and rain gauge-estimated daily rainfall was 8.12 and 8.34 mm, respectively. In annual scale, TRMM V5 3B42-, V5 3B43-, V6 3B42-, V6 3B43- and rain-gauge estimated rainfall was 6.9, 6.4, 6.6, 6.8 and 7.1 mm/day, respectively. The average percentage of rainy days determined by V5 3B42 data with respect to the rain-gauge value was 96%. TRMM is useful for estimating the average values of rainfall in Bangladesh. The prominent difference between rainfall estimated by rain-gauge and V5 3B42 was found to be period- and location-dependent. The V5 3B42 overestimated the rainfall during the pre-monsoon period and in dry regions but underestimated it during the monsoon period and in wet regions. The reason for the differences according to season and locations is considered to be the vertical cross section of convection obtained by TRMM-PR 2A25 data. The rainfall overestimation in pre-monsoon and underestimation in monsoon period measured by V5 3B42 is reduced to reasonable amount by V6 3B42 and V6 3B43. In this manner, the merit of using TRMM data for climatological studies of rainfall over Bangladesh is shown. [Termes IGN] vapeur d'eauRésumé : (auteur) This is the first climatological analysis of precipitable water vapor (PWV) from GPS data over Africa. The data reveal significant modulations and variability in PWV over a broad range of temporal scales. GPS PWV estimates are compared to ECMWF reanalysis ERA40. Both datasets show good agreement at the larger scales (seasonal cycle and inter‐annual variability), driven by large scale moisture transport. At intra‐seasonal (15–40 days) and synoptic (3–10 days) scales, strong PWV modulations are observed from GPS, consistently with ECMWF analysis. They are shown to be correlated with convection and the passage of equatorial waves and African Easterly waves. The high‐frequency GPS observations also reveal a significant diurnal cycle in PWV, which magnitude and spectral content depends strongly on geographic location and shows a seasonal modulation. The diurnal cycle of PWV is poorly represented in ERA40 reflecting weaknesses in the water cycle of global circulation models at this timescale. [Termes IGN] ruissellementRésumé : (Auteur) Rainfall interception by vegetation is an important factor in the water balance. Consequently, rainfall interception should also be an important factor in models simulating processes such as evaporation, transpiration, surface runoff, soil erosion, and crop growth. In practice, however, it is difficult to make quantitative assessments of the spatial and temporal distribution of rainfall interception loss at the catchment level, for instance, and to make these values available as model input. In this paper, we present a novel method using earth observation images to estimate local quantitative values of rainfall interception loss. Leaf Area Index (LAI) and fractional vegetation cover per grid cell are important process variables for rainfall interception. These two variables are estimated from images using spectral vegetation indices and using spectral mixture analysis, respectively. Relations between canopy storage capacity and LAI exist for several plant species and vegetation types, but limited data are found on crops, and more research is needed in this field. The new method is explained and illustrated for a study area in southern France with a variety of land-cover types. It is found to be a valuable and practical approach to quantitatively assess spatial patterns of interception loss for given rainfall events. [Termes IGN] surface de la merRésumé : (Auteur) Rain cells and rain bands over the South China Sea off the coast of Hong Kong are studied by using multi-sensor satellite and ground-based meteorological data. These include synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images acquired by the Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) onboard the European ENVISAT satellite, weather radar images from the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO), rain rate data acquired by the Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I) sensor onboard the F15 satellite of the American Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) and the rain sensors onboard the Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission (TRMM) satellite, cloud image of GOES-9 satellite, sea surface wind maps acquired by the scatterometer onboard the QUIKSCAT satellite, and meteorological data from weather stations in Hong Kong. Three rain events, typical of Hong Kong, are studied. The first event consists of a cluster of rain cells associated with the summer monsoon, the second one of rain cells aligned in a rain band generated by an upper-air trough, and the third one consists of small rain cells embedded in a cold front. It is shown that ASAR images, which have a resolution of 30 m in the Image Mode (IM) and 150 m resolution in the Wide Swath Mode (WSM), yield much more detailed information on the spatial structure of rain events over the ocean than data obtained from SSSM/I and the rain sensors onboard the TRMM satellite. The precipitation radar (PR) onboard TRMM, which is the rain measuring instrument flown in space with the next best resolution, has a resolution of only 4 km. However, the disadvantage of SAR is that it is sometimes difficult to identify SAR signatures visible on SAR images of the sea surface unambiguously as caused by rain events. By comparing SAR images with simultaneously acquired weather radar images of the Hong Kong Observatory, a better knowledge of radar signatures on SAR images resulting from rain events over the ocean is obtained. This knowledge then helps greatly in detecting rain events on SAR images which are acquired over ocean areas, which are not in the reach of weather radar stations. SAR images containing radar signature of rain events allow a much more detailed study of fine-scale structures of rain events over the World’s ocean, in particular of clusters of rain cells, than any other sensor presently flown in space.
