[Termes IGN] transfert radiatifRésumé : (Auteur) The Compact High Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (CHRIS) onboard the Project for On-Board Autonomy (PROBA) platform system provides the first high spatial resolution hyperspectral/multiangular remote sensing data from a satellite system, what represents a new source of information for Earth Observation purposes. A fully consistent radiative transfer approach is always preferred when dealing with the retrieval of surface reflectance from hyperspectral/multiangular data. However, due to the reported calibration anomalies for CHRIS data, a direct atmospheric correction based on physical radiative transfer modeling is not possible, and the method must somehow compensate for such calibration problems in specific wavelength ranges. A dedicated atmospheric correction algorithm for PROBA/CHRIS data over land is presented in this work. It consists in the combination of radiative transfer and empirical line approaches to atmospheric correction, in order to retrieve surface reflectance images free from both the atmospheric distortion and artifacts due to miscalibration. The atmospheric optical parameters and the updated set of calibration coefficients are obtained jointly in an autonomous process, without the need for any ancillary data. Results from the application of the algorithm to PROBA/CHRIS data from the two European Space Agency SPectra bARrax Campaign (SPARC) held at the Barrax study site (La Mancha, Spain) in 2003 and 2004 are presented in this work, focusing on the validation of the final surface reflectance using in situ measurements acquired simultaneously to PROBA overpasses. [Termes IGN] transfert radiatifRésumé : (Auteur) To maximize the spectral distinctiveness (information) of the canopy reflectance, an atmospheric correction strategy was implemented to provide accurate estimates of the intrinsic reflectance from the Earth Observing 1 (EO1) satellite Hyperion sensor signal. In rendering the canopy reflectance, an estimate of optical depth derived from a measurement of downwelling irradiance was used to drive a radiative transfer simulation of atmospheric scattering and attenuation. During the atmospheric model simulation, the input whole-terrain background reflectance estimate was changed to minimize the differences between the model predicted and the observed canopy reflectance spectra at 34 sites. Lacking appropriate spectrally invariant scene targets, inclusion of the field and predicted comparison maximized the model accuracy and, thereby, the detail and precision in the canopy reflectance necessary to detect low percentage occurrences of invasive plants. After accounting for artifacts surrounding prominent absorption features from about 400nm to 1000nm, the atmospheric adjustment strategy correctly explained 99% of the observed canopy reflectance spectra variance. Separately, model simulation explained an average of 88% + 9% of the observed variance in the visible and 98% + 1 % in the near-infrared wavelengths. In the 34 model simulations, maximum différences between the observed and predicted reflectances were typically less than + 1% in the visible ; however, maximum reflectance différences higher than +1.6% ( Numéro de notice : A2005-205 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : IMAGERIE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1080/0431160512331326729 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1080/0431160512331326729 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=27342

[Termes IGN] transfert radiatifRésumé : (Auteur) The Soil Moisture Experiments in 2002 (SMEX02) were conducted in Iowa between June 25th and July 12th, 2002. A major aim of the experiments was examination of existing algorithms for soil moisture retrieval from active and passive microwave remote sensors under high vegetation water content conditions. The data obtained from the passive and active L and S band sensor (PALS) along with physical variables measured by in situ sampling have been used in this study to demonstrate the sensitivity of the instrument to soil moisture and perform soil moisture retrieval using statistical regression and physical modeling techniques. The land cover conditions in the region studied were predominantly soybean and corn crops with average vegetation water contents ranging from 0 to ~ 5 kg/m2. The PALS microwave sensitivity to soil moisture under these vegetation conditions was investigated for both passive and active measurements. The performance of the PALS instrument and retrieval algorithms has been analyzed, indicating soil moisture retrieval errors of approximately 0.04 g/g gravimetric soil moisture. Statistical regression techniques have been shown to perform satisfactorily with soil moisture retrieval error of around 0.05 g/g gravimetric soil moisture. The retrieval errors were higher for the corn than for the soybean fields due to the higher vegetation water content of the corn crops. However, the algorithms performed satisfactorily over the full range of vegetation conditions. [Termes IGN] transfert radiatifRésumé : (Auteur) The first results obtained from the aerosol-cloud retrieval algorithm (developed at the University of Bremen) are presented. The algorithm enables the observation of the regional characteristics of aerosol and cloud optical thickness both over land and ocean surfaces. The aerosol and cloud optical thickness over Western Europe is derived from the high-resolution SeaWiFS data for October 11, 2001 (11:30 UTC). The most probable value of the aerosol optical thickness was found to be equal approximately 0.25. The frequency distributions of the aerosol and cloud optical thickness are skewed and have long tails for larger optical thickness. It was found that retrieved values of the aerosol optical thickness at wavelengths 0.412 and 0.440 um are close to those measured by five ground-based instruments placed at different locations. The problems related to the retrieval of the atmospheric optical thickness from space are discussed.
