[Vedettes matières IGN] Economie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Pure and even-aged (PEA) forests of fast growing conifer species have for long been key providers of industrial raw material. Despite recent concern regarding their greater sensitivity to major natural disturbances, their impacts onto biodiversity and their funding efficiency, PEA conifer forests could remain a major economic target given the ongoing European strategy for bioeconomy. These forests are encountered across contrasted climates and in both native and introduced contexts across Europe giving rise to high uncertainties regarding their growth responses to current climate change. Using the French national forest inventory data, we inquired the radial growth of eight major conifer species in European forestry across 16 regional native and introduced PEA forest systems (n > 10,000 trees). Growth trends over the 2006-2016 period exhibited a negative association with absolute growth level in 2006, with strongest negative trends found for emblematic PEA forestry species (e.g. Norway spruce and Douglas-fir), and strongest positive trends for pine species (e.g. Scots pine). While the greater growth rate advantage of some species may shorten rotation and lower risk exposures for future decades, recent lowered productivity may affect the forest sector in the long run. The prevalence of PEA forests across European forest landscapes and their increasingly reported lower resilience to climate change compared to more complex forest systems call for the establishment of a long-term European forest policy strategy. Maintaining the environmental, social and economic benefits of forests should remain a priority in the European agenda, regardless of the financial costs at stake. [Termes IGN] SuisseRésumé : (auteur) Forests below rocky cliffs often play a very important role in protecting settlements against rockfall. The structure and development of these forests are expected to be substantially affected by the disturbance of the falling rocks. Knowing about this effect is important to predict the development of protection forests and consider potential effects of the falling blocks in management strategies. The goal of this study is to quantify differences in forest structure depending on rockfall activity in four different sites in the Swiss Alps. For this, we collected data on forest structure in zones of different rockfall activity and derived rockfall impact probabilities based on rockfall simulations. We assessed whether differences in forest structure and signs of rockfall disturbance could be observed between the rockfall zones. We additionally built mixed-effects models to identify the key variables explaining the forest characteristics described by diameter (DBH) and basal area (bA). The forest structure differs between the rockfall zones, however, with varying effects amongst the sites. DBH tends to decrease with increasing rockfall activity, whereas tree density appears to be little impacted by rockfall. For most sites, the number of deposited blocks and the simulated tree impact probability have a significant effect in the models along with the species, whereas for one site, hardly any effect of rockfall was found. Our results, obtained either from direct measurements or modelling, show that rockfall can locally influence the structure of forests, whereas the influence depends on the frequency and intensity of the rockfall disturbance. Impact probabilities obtained by simulations can serve as a good proxy for rockfall disturbances. [Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Habitat monitoring in Europe is regulated by Article 17 of the Habitats Directive, which suggests the use of typical species to assess habitat conservation status. Yet, the Directive uses the term “typical” species but does not provide a definition, either for its use in reporting or for its use in impact assessments. To address the issue, an online workshop was organized by the Italian Society for Vegetation Science (SISV) to shed light on the diversity of perspectives regarding the different concepts of typical species, and to discuss the possible implications for habitat monitoring. To this aim, we inquired 73 people with a very different degree of expertise in the field of vegetation science by means of a tailored survey composed of six questions. We analysed the data using Pearson's Chi-squared test to verify that the answers diverged from a random distribution and checked the effect of the degree of experience of the surveyees on the results. We found that most of the surveyees agreed on the use of the phytosociological method for habitat monitoring and of the diagnostic and characteristic species to evaluate the structural and functional conservation status of habitats. With this contribution, we shed light on the meaning of “typical” species in the context of habitat monitoring. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Pinus dalatensis Ferré (Dalat pine, or five-needle pine, locally) is an endemic large tree species of Vietnam that has both high timber and non-timber values. It is also a rare tree species listed in the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The objective of this study was to develop an individual tree diameter growth modeling system to facilitate the sustainable management and conservation of this species. We used Haglöf Sweden ® increment borers to collect tree ring samples from a total of 56 trees resulting in a dataset of 4566 diameter at breast height (dbh, cm) measurements at age (t, year) and obtained the associated ecological environmental factors in three different sites in the Central Highlands, Vietnam. A subset of this dataset (n = 1264) also had the climate data collected over the period of past 32–38 years (from 1980 to 2011 and from 1979 to 2016). Weighted mixed-effects models were used to model Dalat pine trees growth and account for autocorrelation and heteroscedasticity of the dbh measurements. Cross validation over 200 realizations were used to select the best equation form of dbh growth and incorporate the environmental effects and climatic factors that help improve reliability of the models. Under the mixed-effects modeling paradigm, the Mitscherlich equation fitted with random effects of ecological environmental factors (eco-subregions and altitude) and climatic factors (temperature, humidity, and temperature in dry and in rainy seasons) produced the best results. Whereas, under the fixed-effect modeling paradigm, the models that used the exponential function of environmental or climatic factors as the modifiers of an average diameter growth performed the best (Bias = −5.9% and RMSE = 10.0 cm). The models developed in this study will be useful for forecasting growth and for silvicultural planning under shifting environment and climate and are expected to contribute to the sustainable management of this endemic species. [Termes IGN] topographie localeRésumé : (auteur) Intertidal areas provide key ecosystem services but are declining worldwide. Digital elevation models (DEMs) are important tools to monitor the evolution of such areas. In this study, we aim at (i) estimating the intertidal topography based on an established pixel-wise algorithm, from Sentinel-2 MultiSpectral Instrument scenes, (ii) implementing a set of procedures to improve the quality of such estimation, and (iii) estimating the exposure period of the intertidal area of the Bijagós Archipelago, Guinea-Bissau. We first propose a four-parameter logistic regression to estimate intertidal topography. Afterwards, we develop a novel method to estimate tide-stage lags in the area covered by a Sentinel-2 scene to correct for geographical bias in topographic estimation resulting from differences in water height within each image. Our method searches for the minimum differences in height estimates obtained from rising and ebbing tides separately, enabling the estimation of cotidal lines. Tidal-stage differences estimated closely matched those published by official authorities. We re-estimated pixel heights from which we produced a model of intertidal exposure period. We obtained a high correlation between predicted and in-situ measurements of exposure period. We highlight the importance of remote sensing to deliver large-scale intertidal DEM and tide-stage data, with relevance for coastal safety, ecology and biodiversity conservation.
