[Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Dynamics of ecosystem service value (ESV) of various wetlands has been assessed by researchers globally. But the impact of spatio-temporal variation of landscape metrics on ESV in the lower Gangetic plains has not been examined, fully. The present work has established linkages between landscape metrics and ESV in Kolkata urban agglomeration using support vector machine and multivariate regression analysis. Result indicates that wetland area has been reduced by 5.26%, 13.67% and 9.03% during the periods 1990–2000, 2000–2010 and 2010–2020, respectively and the ESV contributed by wetlands has been decreased by $131428, $323674 and $184649, respectively during the same period at an annual rate of 0.85%. Number of patches, mean patch area and edge density are the main determinants of wetland fragmentation and decreased by 44.12%, 10.23% and 8.65%, respectively during the last three decades. A wetland restoration strategy based on dynamic restoration, reactive restoration and wetland creation for the study area has been formulated, which can guide for sustainable management of wetland resources in Kolkata urban agglomeration. [Vedettes matières IGN] ForesterieRésumé : (auteur) Several political initiatives aim to achieve net-zero emissions by the middle of the twenty-first century. In this context, forests are crucial as a carbon sink to store unavoidable emissions. Assessing the carbon sequestration potential of forest ecosystems is pivotal to the availability of accurate forest variable estimates for supporting international reporting and appropriate forest management strategies. Spatially explicit estimates are even more important for Mediterranean countries such as Italy, where the capacity of forests to act as sinks is decreasing due to climate change. This study aimed to develop a spatial approach to obtain high-resolution maps of Italian forest above-ground biomass (ITA-BIO) and current annual volume increment (ITA-CAI), based on remotely sensed and meteorological data. The ITA-BIO estimates were compared with those obtained with two available biomass maps developed in the framework of two international projects (i.e., the Joint Research Center and the European Space Agency biomass maps, namely, JRC-BIO and ESA-BIO). The estimates from ITA-BIO, JRC-BIO, ESA-BIO, and ITA-CAI were compared with the 2nd Italian NFI (INFC) official estimates at regional level (NUT2). The estimates from ITA-BIO are in good agreement with the INFC estimates (R2 = 0.95, mean difference = 3.8 t ha−1), while for JRC-BIO and ESA-BIO, the estimates show R2 of 0.90 and 0.70, respectively, and mean differences of 13.5 and of 21.8 t ha−1 with respect to the INFC estimates. ITA-CAI estimates are also in good agreement with the INFC estimates (R2 = 0.93), even if they tend to be slightly biased. The produced maps are hosted on a web-based forest resources management Decision Support System developed under the project AGRIDIGIT (ForestView) and represent a key element in supporting the new Green Deal in Italy, the European Forest Strategy 2030 and the Italian Forest Strategy. [Vedettes matières IGN] ForesterieRésumé : (auteur) Ecological knowledge on long-term forest dynamics and development has been primarily derived from the study of old-growth forests. Centuries of forest management have decreased the extent of temperate old-growth forests in Europe and altered managed forests. Disentangling the effects of past human disturbances and climate on current species composition is crucial for understanding the long-term development of forests under global change. In this study, we investigated disturbance and recruitment dynamics in two forests in the Western Pyrenees (Spain) with contrasting management history: an old-growth forest and a long-untouched forest, both dominated by the two shade-tolerant species Fagus sylvatica (European beech) and Abies alba (Silver fir). We used dendroecological methods in seven plots to analyse forest structure, growth patterns and disturbance histories in these forests. We benchmarked these data with the dynamic vegetation model ForClim to examine the effects of natural and human-induced disturbances on forest development, structure and species composition. Disturbance regimes differed between the study forests, but none showed evidence of stand replacing disturbances, either natural or human induced. Low disturbance rates and continuous recruitment of beech and fir dominated the old-growth forest over the last 400 years. In contrast, the long-untouched forest was intensively disturbed in 1700–1780, probably by logging, with lower natural disturbance rates thereafter. Beech and fir recruitment preferentially occurred after more intense disturbances, despite the high shade tolerance of both beech and fir. Higher fir abundance in the long-untouched forest than in the old-growth forest appeared to be related to its human-induced disturbances. ForClim closely simulated forest potential natural vegetation with a dominance of beech over fir, but overestimated the presence of less shade-tolerant species. Previously observed local fir decline may result from natural forest successional processes after logging. Within ∼200 years after logging cessation, some long-untouched forest structural attributes converged towards old-growth forest, but legacy effects still affected species composition and structure. Natural disturbance regimes in beech-fir forests of the Western Pyrenees induce temporal fluctuations between beech and fir abundance, with a natural tendency for beech dominance in advanced developmental stages with low disturbance rates. [Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Species Distribution Models (SDM) represent a powerful tool to predict species’ habitat suitability on a landscape and fill the gap between truncated observation data and all possible locations. SDMs have been widely used in theoretical studies of species niches as well as in conservation applications. Here, we evaluated the impacts of predictors’ type on models’ performances and spatial predictions using 72 plant species belonging to six ecological groups at a regional scale in the area of Geneva (Switzerland). Twelve models were created using various combinations of high-resolution (25 m) explanatory variables including topography, pedology, climate, habitats and remote sensing data. Models integrating a combination of habitats and topopedo-climatic predictors had significantly higher performances, while remote sensing predictors showed low performances. Our results suggest that the number and the level of details of habitat predictors (broad or very precise) do not fundamentally affect prediction maps. However, selecting too few, overly simplified or exceedingly complex habitat predictors tend to lower models’ performances. The use of eight habitat categories complemented with eight topopedo-climatic predictors produced models with the highest performances. Ecological groups of species responded differently to models and while alpine and ruderal species have greater average performances due to a high affinity with topopedo-climatic predictors, wetlands’ species were less performant on average. These results underline the necessity of developing or having access to habitats distribution data especially in a conservation context.
