[Termes IGN] superposition d'imagesRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we demonstrate an approach to align aerial images to airborne lidar data by using common object features (tree tops) from both data sets under the condition that conventional correlation-based approaches are challenging due to the fact that the spatial pattern of pixel gray-scale values in aerial images hardly exist in lidar data. We extracted tree tops by using an image processing technique called extended-maxima transformation from both aerial images and lidar data. Our approach was tested at the Angelo Coast Range Reserve on the South Fork Eel River forests in Mendocino County, California. Although the aerial images were acquired simultaneously with the lidar data, the images had only approximate exposure point locations and average flight elevation information, which mimicked the condition of limited information availability about the aerial images. Our results showed that this approach enabled us to align aerial images to airborne lidar data at the single-tree level with reasonable accuracy. With a local transformation model (piecewise linear model), the RMSE and the median absolute deviation (MAD) of the registration were 9.2 pixels (2.3 meters) and 6.8 pixels (1.41 meters), respectively. We expect our approach to be applicable to fine scale change detection for forest ecosystems and may serve to extract detailed forest biophysical parameters. [Termes IGN] protection de la biodiversitéRésumé : (auteur) La gouvernance de l’environnement dépend de la manière dont les acteurs se représentent l’évolution des milieux et des ressources naturelles. Dans ce contexte, l’information environnementale peut constituer un appui pour justifier ou remettre en cause des modes de gestion. Quand elle est produite dans ce but, l’information est un instrument d’action publique qui véhicule elle-même certains cadrages, plus ou moins favorables à des logiques de production ou de préservation. Cet article s’interroge sur le lien entre l’usage de certains indicateurs pour l’action publique et la logique de production ou de préservation qui motive cette action. En retraçant l’histoire de la régulation dans les secteurs hydrauliques et forestiers en France, nous montrons qu’il n’y a pas d’équivalence entre l’usage d’indicateurs écologiques et la logique de préservation. Dans le domaine forestier, l’information sur les milieux a plutôt servi les logiques sylvicoles et elle est principalement produite par les acteurs du secteur qui cherchent à mieux valoriser le bois. Dans le domaine de l’eau, l’information écologique a été un appui pour des acteurs qui dénonçaient les excès d’une logique productive centrée uniquement sur la ressource. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (Auteur) The advancing technology of hyperspectral remote sensing offers the opportunity of accurate land cover characterization of complex natural environments. In this study, a linear spectral unmixing algorithm that incorporates a novel hierarchical Bayesian approach (BI-ICE) was applied on two spatially and temporally adjacent CHRIS/PROBA images over a forest in North Pindos National Park (Epirus, Greece). The scope is to investigate the potential of this algorithm to discriminate two different forest species (i.e. beech – Fagus sylvatica, pine – Pinus nigra) and produce accurate species-specific abundance maps. The unmixing results were evaluated in uniformly distributed plots across the test site using measured fractions of each species derived by very high resolution aerial orthophotos. Landsat-8 images were also used to produce a conventional discrete-type classification map of the test site. This map was used to define the exact borders of the test site and compare the thematic information of the two mapping approaches (discrete vs abundance mapping). The required ground truth information, regarding training and validation of the applied mapping methodologies, was collected during a field campaign across the study site. Abundance estimates reached very good overall accuracy (R2 = 0.98, RMSE = 0.06). The most significant source of error in our results was due to the shadowing effects that were very intense in some areas of the test site due to the low solar elevation during CHRIS acquisitions. It is also demonstrated that the two mapping approaches are in accordance across pure and dense forest areas, but the conventional classification map fails to describe the natural spatial gradients of each species and the actual species mixture across the test site. Overall, the BI-ICE algorithm presented increased potential to unmix challenging objects with high spectral similarity, such as different vegetation species, under real and not optimum acquisition conditions. Its full potential remains to be investigated in further and more complex study sites in view of the upcoming satellite hyperspectral missions. These populations may concurrently be those where the most significant evolutionary changes will occur; those most facing increasing extinction risk; the source of migrants for the colonization of new areas at leading edges; or the source of genetic novelty for reinforcing standing genetic variation in various parts of the range. Deciding which strategy to implement for conserving and sustainably using the genetic resources of peripheral forest tree populations is a challenge.
Here, we review the genetic and ecological processes acting on different types of peripheral populations and indicate why these processes may be of general interest for adapting forests and forest management to climate change. We particularly focus on peripheral populations at the rear edge of species distributions where environmental challenges are or will become most acute. We argue that peripheral forest tree populations are “natural laboratories” for resolving priority research questions such as how the complex interaction between demographic processes and natural selection shape local adaptation; and whether genetic adaptation will be sufficient to allow the long-term persistence of species within their current distribution.
Peripheral populations are key assets for adaptive forestry which need specific measures for their preservation. The traditionally opposing views which may exist between conservation planning and sustainable forestry need to be reconciled and harmonized for managing peripheral populations. L’article 11 de la directive demande la mise en place par les États membres d’un dispositif permanent de surveillance de l’état de conservation des espèces et des habitats d’intérêt communautaire. Depuis 2011 et à la demande du ministère chargé de l’environnement, le dispositif statistique d’évaluation de la ressource forestière de l’Institut national de l’information géographique et forestière (IGN) est mobilisé, à échantillonnage constant, pour la production d’informations constatées sur l’état de conservation des habitats.
