[Termes IGN] végétationRésumé : (Auteur) Field studies among diverse biomes demonstrate that massbased nitrogen concentration at leaf and canopy scales is strongly related to carbon uptake and cycling. Combined field and airborne imaging spectrometry studies demonstrate the capacity for accurate empirical estimation of forest canopy N concentration and other biochemical constituents at scales from forest stands to small landscapes. In this paper, we report on the utility of the first spacebased imaging spectrometer, Hyperion, for estimation of temperate forest canopy N concentration as compared to that achieved with the airborne highaltitude imaging spectrometer, the Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS). Overall accuracy of Hyperion estimates of forest canopy N concentration, as compared with field measurements, were within 0.25% dry mass, and AVIRISbased estimates were within 0.19% dry mass, each well within the accuracy required to distinguish among forested ecosystems in nitrogen status. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) The urban environment is characterized by an intense multifunctional use of available spaces, where the preservation of open green spaces is of special importance. For this purpose, areawide urban biotope mapping based on CIR aerial photographs has been carried out for the large cities in Germany during the last 10 years. Because of dynamic urban development and high mapping costs, the municipal authorities are interested in effective methods for mapping urban surface cover types, which can be used for evaluation of ecological conditions in urban structures and supporting updates of biotope maps. Against this background, airborne hyperspectral remote sensing data of the DAIS 7915 instrument have been analyzed for a test site in the city of Dresden (Germany) with regard to their potential for automated materialoriented identification of urban surface cover types. Previous investigations have shown that the high spectral and spatial variabilities of these data require the development of special methods, which are capable of dealing with the resulting mixedpixel problem in its specific characteristics in urban areas. Earlier, methodological developments led to an approach based on a combination of spectral classification and pixeloriented unmixing techniques to facilitate sensible endmember selection based on the reflective bands of the DAIS instrument. This approach is now extended by a shapebased classification technique including the thermal bands of the DAIS instrument to improve the detection of buildings during the process of identifying seedling pixels, which represent the starting points for linear spectral unmixing. This new approach increases the reliability of differentiation between buildings and open spaces, leading to more accurate results for the spatial distribution of surface cover types. Thus, the new approach significantly enhances the exploitation of the information potential of the hyperspectral DAIS 7915 data for an areawide identification of urban surface cover types. [Termes IGN] visualisationRésumé : (Auteur) This research investigates the potential of a dedicated Geographic Information System (GIS) to provide spatiotemporal data visualisation and analysis to aid multiple-use forest management in the Kingston State Forest, near Manjimup, Western Australia. The goals of this research are to develop and use sophisticated data evaluation techniques to assist in understanding the ecology of the western ringtail possum and to evaluate the impact of current timber harvesting practices on possum populations to ensure the jarrah forests continue to support them.
Data used included digital topographic data as well as spatial and temporal fauna observation data. Visual representation of interactive queries offered a conceptual understanding of the spatial structure and temporal aspects of the data, showing that possum behaviour differed between harvested and nonharvested areas within the research site. Furthermore, the dedicated GIS proved its utility as a management and research tool that is readily transferable and accessible to multiple-use land managers and research scientists, offering a generic environment fior subsequent fauna habitat research. The focus of this paper is the development of the dedicated GIS environment.
