[Termes IGN] régression logistiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Modelling and mapping of hooded warbler (Wilsonia citrina) nesting habitat in forests of southern Ontario were conducted using Ikonos and Landsat data. The study began with an analysis of skyward hemispherical photography to determine canopy characteristics associated with nest sites. It showed that nest sites had significantly less overhead canopy cover and larger maximum gap size than in non-nest areas. These findings led to the hypothesis that brightness variability in high to moderate resolution remotely sensed imagery may be greater at nest sites than in non-nest areas due to larger shadows and greater shadow variability related to these gap characteristics. This was confirmed when, in addition to some spectral band brightness variables, several image texture and spectrally unmixed fraction (shadow, bare soil) variables were found to be significantly different for nest and non-nest sites in Ikonos and Landsat imagery. These significantly different variables were used in maximum likelihood classification (MLC) and logistic regression (LR) to produce maps of potential nesting habitat. Mapping was conducted with Ikonos and Landsat in a local area where most known nest sites occur, and regionally using Landsat data for almost all of the hooded warbler range in southern Ontario. For the local area mapping using Ikonos data, a posteriori probabilities for both the MLC and LR methods showed that about 62% of the nest sites set aside for validation had been classified with high probability (p > 0.70) in the nest class. MLC mapping accuracy was 70% for the validation nest sites and 87% of validation nest sites were within 10 m of classified nesting habitat, a distance approximately equivalent to expected positional error in the data. LR accuracy was slightly lower. Nest site MLC mapping accuracy in the local area using Landsat data was 87% but the map was much coarser due to the larger pixel size. Regional mapping with Landsat imagery produced lower classification accuracy due to high errors of commission for the habitat class. This resulted from a poor spatial distribution and low number of observations of nest sites throughout the region compared to the local area, while the non-nest site data distribution was too narrow, having been defined and assessed (using standard accepted methods) as areas with no ground shrubs. If either of these problems can be ameliorated, regional mapping accuracy may improve. [Termes IGN] planctonRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents the spectral decomposition algorithm (SDA), a new algorithm for estimating chlorophyll-a concentration in case II waters using multi-spectral satellite data, which is based on a simulation in a controlled laboratory experiment. The SDA is composed of two key steps. The first of these is to consider the mixed reflectance spectrum of a given pixel as a linear combination of three basic components: clear water, non phytoplankton suspended sediments (NPSS), and phytoplankton. The second step is to use a decomposition coefficient (Cp) obtained from the first step as an independent variable in the chlorophyll-a estimation model, instead of the single band reflectance, band ratio or arithmetic calculation of bands used in conventional methods. The simulated results for the Landsat TM data showed that bands 1, 3 and 4 are useful wavelengths for estimating chlorophyll-a concentrations. In the case of a water body with chlorophyll-a concentrations ranging from 0 to 105 ug1-1 and NPSS concentrations ranging from 0 to l00m g1-1, the RMSE of the estimation model of chlorophyll-a concentrations based on the SDA was 13.7 ug1-1, reduced by nearly half of that for conventional methods (the RMSE was 25.6 ug1-for the band ratio, and 25.5 ug1-for the arithmetic calculation of bands). The results of a two-factor ANOVA (without replication) highlight that the decomposition coefficient Cp contains information from phytoplankton far more than from NPSS. However, Cp values were still changed with the addition of NPSS, due mainly to the influence of the interaction of optical properties among phytoplankton, NPSS and water, which occurred in both horizontal and vertical directions in the water bodies. Considering the basic components as a nonlinear combination in a water area may reduce the effect of NPSS on Cp values from that of their linear combination. In addition, the influence of coloured dissolved organic matter (CDOM), which is generally considered as one of the optically active substances in case II waters, was ignored according to the practical conditions of our study area, Lake Kasumigaura, Japan in this paper. Users can set the basic components (or endmembers) freely according to the conditions of their own study area when the SDA is used (e.g. considering the CDOM as a basic component in the SDA). [Termes IGN] Web Map ServiceRésumé : (Auteur) A web-based distributed system for monitoring and forecasting of the marine environment has been developed in line with INfrastructure for SPatial InfoRmation in Europe (INSPIRE) and Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) recommendations for a European Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI). This system, called DISPRO, enables integration and distribution of multi-source data from satellites, aircraft, and in situ instruments, as well as results from numerical models. Geographic data and metadata are stored on a set of distributed computer nodes and retrieved and integrated by a web GIS client by means of Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Web Map Server (WMS) technologies. A profile of ISO 19115 was developed for metadata handling, using eXtensible Markup Language (XML) as a platform independent encoding mechanism. DISPRO has been demonstrated in six European coastal zone and ocean regions in the spring and summer of 2005. The overall positive experiences of both service providers and end users indicate that the system should be further developed into an operational GMES service.
