[Termes IGN] service écosystémiqueRésumé : (auteur) Les processus de dégradation et de préservation des ressources naturelles s’accompagnent souvent de tensions et conflits entre les acteurs des territoires. Le cadre des services écosystémiques (SE) est désormais communément utilisé pour analyser ces processus et penser les termes d’une meilleure gouvernance. Nous développons ici l’idée impertinente selon laquelle l’intégration du concept très contesté de disservice écosystémique (DSE), qui qualifie les nuisances associées aux écosystèmes, améliore la compréhension de ces dynamiques et porte les germes d’une meilleure justice environnementale. Nous mobilisons trois cas d’étude dans lesquels les enjeux environnementaux sont sources de SE et DSE: le sanglier dans le Mont Lozère (France), les arbres champêtres dans les coteaux de Gascogne (France) et l’éléphant à Hwange (Zimbabwe). Au total, 119 entretiens semi-directifs ou essais anonymes ont été collectés et analysés selon deux axes autour des SE et DSE: i) les représentations et pratiques, ii) la gouvernance. Nos résultats montrent que le concept de DSE, associé à celui de SE, est utile pour révéler la complexité, voire l’ambivalence, des représentations des acteurs. Il permet en outre d’évaluer le rôle des pratiques dans le renforcement ou l’atténuation de nuisances écologiques qui ne sont pas toujours reliées à des dynamiques écologiques. Ce concept enrichit aussi la compréhension des positionnements des acteurs et des enjeux de gouvernance, permettant par exemple de révéler les contradictions et effets pervers de certaines politiques environnementales. Malgré les controverses dont il a fait l’objet, le concept de DSE semble donc prometteur pour repenser la gouvernance environnementale dans les territoires. [Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Moving from a forest standing tree volume assessment to a biomass assessment requires knowledge of the basic density of wood which, beyond average values by species or group of species, varies greatly within and between species, environmental conditions, and the structural and management properties of the stands. Based on breakthrough innovation, the XyloDensMap project has enabled the high throughput measurement of the wood basic density of more than one hundred and ten thousand drill cores taken during four successive campaigns of the National Forest Inventory. Here we present the first results of the basic wood density of the Mediterranean forest tree species which lead to an upward estimate of 12% of the above-ground biomass of these forests. We conclude by underlining the need for additional samples for species that are poorly represented and when management issues for biomass are raised at local scales such as that of stands. [Vedettes matières IGN] SylvicultureRésumé : (auteur) Background and Objectives: Continuous cover forestry is of increasing importance, but operational forest growth models are still lacking. The debate is especially open if more complex spatial approaches would provide a worthwhile increase in accuracy. Our objective was to compare a nonspatial versus a spatial approach for individual Norway spruce tree growth models under single-tree selection cutting.
Materials and Methods: We calibrated nonlinear mixed models using data from a long-term experiment in Finland (20 stands with 3538 individual trees for 10,238 growth measurements). We compared the use of nonspatial versus spatial predictors to describe the competitive pressure and its release after cutting. The models were compared in terms of Akaike Information Criteria (AIC), root mean square error (RMSE), and mean absolute bias (MAB), both with the training data and after cross-validation with a leave-one-out method at stand level.
Results: Even though the spatial model had a lower AIC than the nonspatial model, RMSE and MAB of the two models were similar. Both models tended to underpredict growth for the highest observed values when the tree-level random effects were not used. After cross-validation, the aggregated predictions at stand level well represented the observations in both models. For most of the predictors, the use of values based on trees’ height rather than trees’ diameter improved the fit. After single-tree selection cutting, trees had a growth boost both in the first and second five-year period after cutting, however, with different predicted intensity in the two models.
Conclusions: Under the research framework here considered, the spatial modeling approach was not more accurate than the nonspatial one. Regarding the single-tree selection cutting, an intervention regime spaced no more than 15 years apart seems necessary to sustain the individual tree growth. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Key message: In recent decades, there has been a decline in growth in a rear-edge broadleaf forest of Fagus sylvatica , Quercus petraea , and Quercus pyrenaica . Although temperatures have been rising due to climate change, the observed decline in growth was mainly attributed to increased density and competition between trees since the cessation of traditional uses such as logging in the 1960s.
Context: In recent decades, two major factors have influenced tree growth in many forests: climate warming, which is associated with aridification and negative growth trends in many Mediterranean forests, and abandonment of forest management, resulting from forest policy in conjunction with rural depopulation in Europe, often leading to an increase in competition and a decrease in growth.
Aims: Here, we study the growth trends in a mixed forest of Fagus sylvatica, Quercus petraea, and Quercus pyrenaica, where the abandonment of traditional uses in the 1960s has been followed by an increase in tree density. In this forest, both F. sylvatica and Q. petraea reach their south-westernmost limits of distribution.
Methods: Using dendrochronological methods and growth modeling, we assess the importance of climate warming on the shifts in competitive growth advantage of these three coexisting tree species and the relative importance of climate and competition on growth trends.
Results: Q. petraea and especially F. sylvatica showed a favorable evolution of their competitive capacity, despite the increase in temperatures that has occurred in the area in recent decades. F. sylvatica presented the lowest sensitivity to climate.

We showed that fire-related traits of some pine species are strongly related to other factors than fire but the recent fire history has nonetheless an impact on the variation of key traits for different fire adaptive strategies.
Context: In fire-prone Mediterranean areas, climate change is expected to exacerbate the fire pressure on ecosystems, altering the current fire regime and threatening species if they cannot acclimate.
Aims: Studying intraspecific variations of some fire-related traits in relation to variation in recent fire activity is thus an important step to better understand if this acclimation is possible.
Methods: We measured structural (bark thickness, shoot bulk density, self-pruning, leaf surface to volume ratio) and functional (serotiny level for Pinus halepensis only) traits in two pines species (Pinus halepensis and Pinus sylvestris) commonly found in southeastern France and that present different fire-adaptive strategies (resilience vs resistance, respectively). Populations were sampled according to different fire frequency modalities (0 vs 1 to 2 fires) along a geographical gradient, measuring numerous environmental and plant characteristics to be used cofactors in the analyses.
Results: As expected, trait variation was strongly linked to environmental and tree characteristics as well as to ontogeny overriding the effect of fire modalities, even though using integrative models with random effect. However, fire modalities had an impact on the variance of some key fire-related traits of Pinus halepensis.
