[Termes IGN] zone d'intérêtRésumé : (auteur) The increasing amount of geotagged social media data provides a possible resource for location prediction. However, existing location prediction methods rarely incorporate temporal changes in mobility patterns, which could lead to unreliable predictions. In particular, human mobility patterns have changed greatly in the COVID-19 era. We propose a novel model to predict individuals’ movements in dynamic regions of interest (ROIs), taking into account changes in activity areas and movement regularity. To address changes in the activity areas, we design a new updating strategy that can ensure the realistic extraction of an individual’s ROIs. Then, we develop an integration model for changes in the movement regularity based on two newly proposed prediction methods that consider both rapid and slow changes. The proposed integration model is evaluated based on five real-world social media datasets; three Weibo datasets related to COVID-19 collected in three Chinese cities, one Twitter dataset collected in New York and one dense GPS dataset. The results demonstrate that the proposed model can achieve better performances than state-of-the-art models, especially when mobility patterns change greatly. Combined with related pandemic data, this study will benefit pandemic prevention and control. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) The provision of webGIS-based water quality data services has become a priority area for both the public and administrative sectors in the context of the pandemic emergency associated with the global spread of COVID-19. Current geographic, monitoring and decision supporting systems, typically based on web-based geospatial information, greatly facilitate the sharing of spatial and temporal data from environmental databases and real-time analyses. In the present study, different water quality indices are determined, compared and geovisualized, during which the changes in the quality of the shallow groundwater resources of a settlement are examined in the period (2011–2019) in an eastern Hungarian settlement. Another objective of the research is to determine three water quality indices (Water Quality Index, CCME Water Quality Index, Contamination degree) and categorize water samples based on the same input spatial and temporal data using self-developed freely available geovisualization tools. Groundwater quality was assessed by using different water quality indices. Significant pollution of the groundwater in the time period before the installation of a sewage network was shown. Regarding water quality, significant positive changes were shown based on all three water quality indices in the years after installing a sewage network (2015–2019). The presence of pollution apart from the positive changes suggests that the purification processes will last for a long time. [Termes IGN] système de numérisation mobileRésumé : (auteur) Street trees are important components of an urban green space and understanding and measuring their ecological and cultural services is crucial for assessing the quality of streets and managing urban environments. Currently, most studies mainly focus on evaluating the ecological services of street trees by measuring the amount of greenness, but how to evaluate their aesthetic functions through quantitative measurements of street trees remain unclear. To address this problem, we propose a method to assess the aesthetic functions of street trees by quantifying the shape of greenness inspired by assessments of skyline aesthetics. Using a state-of-the-art mobile mapping system, we collected downtown-wide lidar data and panoramic images in Jinzhou City, Hebei Province, China. We developed a method for extracting the canopy line from the mobile lidar data, and then identified two basic elements, peaks and gaps, from street canopy lines and extracted six indexes (i.e., richness of peaks, evenness of peaks, frequency of peaks, total length of gaps, evenness of gaps and frequency of gaps) to describe the fluctuations and continuities of street canopy lines. We analyzed the abundance and spatial distribution of these indexes together with survey responses on the streets’ aesthetics and found that most of them were significantly correlated with human perception of streets. Compared to indexes of amount of greenness (e.g., green volume and green view index), these shape indexes have stronger influences on the physical aesthetic beauty of street trees. These findings suggest that a comprehensive assessment of the aesthetic function of street trees should consider both shape and amount of greenness. This study provides a new perspective for the assessment of urban green spaces and can assist future urban greening planning and urban landscape management. Contradicting relationships have been reported concerning carbon stock, while little is known about relationships concerning timber stock and the abundance of non-timber forest product producing plant species (NTFP abundance). Using 151 1-ha plots, we related tree and arborescent palm species richness to carbon stock, timber stock and NTFP abundance across the Guiana Shield, and using 283 1-ha plots, to carbon stock across all of Amazonia. We analysed how environmental heterogeneity influenced these relationships, assessing differences across and within multiple forest types, biogeographic regions and subregions. Species richness showed significant relationships with all three ecosystem services, but relationships differed between forest types and among biogeographical strata. We found that species richness was positively associated to carbon stock in all biogeographical strata. This association became obscured by variation across biogeographical regions at the scale of Amazonia, resembling a Simpson’s paradox. By contrast, species richness was weakly or not significantly related to timber stock and NTFP abundance, suggesting that species richness is not a good predictor for these ecosystem services. Our findings illustrate the importance of environmental stratification in analysing biodiversity-ecosystem services relationships. [Vedettes matières IGN] SylvicultureRésumé : (auteur) Low mortality rates and slow growth differentiate shade-tolerant from shade-intolerant species and define the survival strategy of juvenile trees growing in deep shade. While radial stem growth has been widely used to explain mortality in juvenile trees, the leaf area ratio (LAR), known to be a key component of shade tolerance, has been neglected so far. We assessed the effects of LAR, radial stem growth and tree height on survival time and the age-specific mortality rate of juvenile Fagus sylvatica L. (European beech), Acer pseudoplatanus L. (sycamore maple) and Acer platanoides L. (Norway maple) in a primeval beech forest (Ukraine). Aboveground and belowground biomass and radial stem growth were analysed for 289 living and 179 dead seedlings and saplings. Compared with the other species, F. sylvatica featured higher LAR, slower growth and a lower mortality rate. The average survival time of F. sylvatica juveniles (72 years) allows it to reach the canopy more often than its competitors in forests with low canopy turnover rate. In contrast, a combination of lower LAR, higher growth rate and higher age-specific mortality rate of the two Acer species resulted in their shorter survival times and thus render their presence in the canopy a rare event. Overall, this study suggests that shade tolerance, commonly defined as a relationship between sapling mortality and growth, can alternatively be formulated as a relationship between survival time and the interplay of growth and LAR.
