[Termes IGN] PinophytaRésumé : (Auteur) We compared the ability of several classification and regression algorithms to predict forest stand structure metrics and standard surface fuel models. Our study area spans a dense, topographically complex Sierra Nevada mixed-conifer forest. We used clustering, regression trees, and support vector machine algorithms to analyze high density (average 9 pulses/m2), discrete return, small-footprint lidar data, along with multispectral imagery. Stand structure metric predictions generally decreased with increased canopy penetration. For example, from the top of canopy, we predicted canopy height (r2 ! 0.87), canopy cover (r2 ! 0.83), basal area (r2 ! 0.82), shrub cover (r2 ! 0.62), shrub height (r2 ! 0.59), combined fuel loads (r2 ! 0.48), and fuel bed depth (r2 ! 0.35). While the general fuel types were predicted accurately, specific surface fuel model predictions were poor (76 percent and "50 percent correct classification, respectively) using all algorithms. These fuel components are critical inputs for wildfire behavior modeling, which ultimately support forest management decisions. This comprehensive examination of the relative utility of lidar and optical imagery will be useful for forest science and management. In the past six years, the SETHI instrument, hosted on board a Falcon 20 aircraft, has been developed with a main focus on science applications. In this paper, the philosophy of this development is highlighted together with a detailed description of the instruments. The SETHI instrument includes three SAR systems at P, L and X bands, one context camera in the visible domain, with a side looking geometry matching the radar field of view, and a hyperspectral camera with standard nadir geometry. The paper then summarises the latest SETHI campaigns in the context of two spaceborne mission preparations. The first is the ESA BIOMASS mission with a P-Band SAR instrument for global forest biomass mapping. The second one is a maritime surveillance mission, including an X-band SAR system. For each campaign, the main objectives are listed, the references to the dedicated papers are provided and the major results are highlighted. Finally the paper then provides a preview for the future developments around the SETHI system, for studies dedicated to the optical/radar data fusion. [Termes IGN] strate végétaleRésumé : (Auteur) This study presents a robust approach for characterization of multi-layered forests using airborne laser scanning (ALS) data. Fuel mapping or biomass estimation requires knowing the diversity and boundaries of the forest patches, as well as their spatial pattern. This includes the thickness of the main vegetation layers, but also the spatial arrangement and size of the individual plants that compose each stratum. In order to decompose the ALS point cloud into genuine 3-D segments corresponding to individual vegetation features, such as shrubs or tree crowns, we apply a statistical approach based on the mean shift algorithm. The segments are progressively assigned to a forest layer: ground vegetation, understory or overstory. Our method relies on a single biophysically meaningful parameter, the kernel bandwidth, which is related to the local forest structure. It is validated on 44 plots of a Portuguese forest, composed mainly of eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus Labill.) and maritime pine (Pinus pinaster Ait.) trees. The number of detected trees varies with the dominance position: from 98.6% for the dominant trees to 12.8% for the suppressed trees. Linear regression models explain up to 70% of the variability associated with ground vegetation and understory height. [Termes IGN] ThaïlandeRésumé : (Auteur) Quantifying the above ground biomass of tropical forests is critical for understanding the dynamics of carbon fluxes between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere, as well as monitoring ecosystem responses to environmental change. Remote sensing remains an attractive tool for estimating tropical forest biomass but relationships and methods used at one site have not always proved applicable to other locations. This lack of a widely applicable general relationship limits the operational use of remote sensing as a method for biomass estimation, particularly in high biomass ecosystems. Here, multispectral Landsat TM and JERS-1 SAR data were used together to estimate tropical forest biomass at three separate geographical locations: Brazil, Malaysia and Thailand. Texture measures were derived from the JERS-1 SAR data using both wavelet analysis and Grey Level Co-occurrence Matrix methods, and coupled with multispectral data to provide inputs to artificial neural networks that were trained under four different training scenarios and validated using biomass measured from 144 field plots. When trained and tested with data collected from the same location, the addition of SAR texture to multispectral data showed strong correlations with above ground biomass (r = 0.79, 0.79 and 0.84 for Thailand, Malaysia and Brazil respectively). Also, when networks were trained and tested with data from all three sites, the strength of correlation (r = 0.55) was stronger than previously reported results from the same sites that used multispectral data only. Uncertainty in estimating AGB from different allometric equations was also tested but found to have little effect on the strength of the relationships observed. The results suggest that the inclusion of SAR texture with multispectral data can go someway towards providing relationships that are transferable across time and space, but that further work is required if satellite remote sensing is to provide robust and reliable methodologies for initiatives such as Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD+).
