[Termes IGN] zone semi-arideRésumé : (Auteur) The use of land surface temperature (LST) for monitoring the consumption and water status of crops requires data at fine spatial and temporal resolutions. Unfortunately, the current spaceborne thermal sensors provide data at either high temporal (e.g. MODIS: Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectro-radiometer) or high spatial (e.g. Landsat) resolution separately. Disaggregating low spatial resolution (LR) LST data using ancillary data available at high spatio-temporal resolution could compensate for the lack of high spatial resolution (HR) LST observations. Existing LST downscaling approaches generally rely on the fractional green vegetation cover (fgv) derived from HR reflectances but they do not take into account the soil water availability to explain the spatial variability in LST at HR. In this context, a new method is developed to disaggregate kilometric MODIS LST at 100 m resolution by including the Sentinel-1 (S-1) backscatter, which is indirectly linked to surface soil moisture, in addition to the Landsat-7 and Landsat-8 (L-7 & L-8) reflectances. The approach is tested over two different sites – an 8 km by 8 km irrigated crop area named “R3” and a 12 km by 12 km rainfed area named “Sidi Rahal” in central Morocco (Marrakech) – on the seven dates when S-1, and L-7 or L-8 acquisitions coincide with a one-day precision during the 2015–2016 growing season. The downscaling methods are applied to the 1 km resolution MODIS-Terra LST data, and their performance is assessed by comparing the 100 m disaggregated LST to Landsat LST in three cases: no disaggregation, disaggregation using Landsat fgv only, disaggregation using both Landsat fgv and S-1 backscatter. When including fgv only in the disaggregation procedure, the mean root mean square error in LST decreases from 4.20 to 3.60 °C and the mean correlation coefficient (R) increases from 0.45 to 0.69 compared to the non-disaggregated case within R3. The new methodology including the S-1 backscatter as input to the disaggregation is found to be systematically more accurate on the available dates with a disaggregation mean error decreasing to 3.35 °C and a mean R increasing to 0.75. [Termes IGN] zone humideRésumé : (Auteur) Wetlands are essential ecosystems which provide numerous benefits to society as a whole. But their functionality strongly depends on the hydrology and topography of the watershed, thus creating the need for monitoring. The use of terrestrial topographical survey methods can be a challenging task in wetlands, however. Flooded areas, muddy terrain and low vegetation can substantially slow down or even prevent the movement of surveyors, while tall vegetation can obstruct GPS reception. As this article outlines, advanced technologies such as airborne or UAS Lidar offer interesting alternatives for surveying the hydrology and topography of wetlands. [Termes IGN] surveillance de la végétationRésumé : (auteur) Permanent Grasslands (PG) are heterogeneous environments with high spatial and temporal dynamics, subject to increasing environmental challenges. This study aims to identify requirements, key constraining factors and solutions for robust and complete detection of Mowing Events. Remote sensing is a powerful tool to monitor and investigate Near-Real-Time and seasonally PG cover. Here, pros and cons of Sentinel-2 (S2) and Sentinel-1 (S1) time series exploitation for Mowing Events (MowEve) detection are analysed. A deep-based approach is proposed to obtain consistent and homogeneous biophysical parameter times series for MowEve detection. Recurrent Neural Networks are proposed as regression strategy allowing the synergistic integration of optical and Synthetic Aperture Radar data to reconstruct dense NDVI times series. Experimental results corroborates the interest of deriving consistent and homogeneous series of biophysical parameters for subsequent MowEve detection. [Termes IGN] zone arideRésumé : (auteur) Flooding impacts can be reduced through application of suitable hydrological and hydraulic tools to define flood zones in a specific area. This article proposes a risk matrix technique which is applied on a case study of Taibah and Islamic universities catchment in Medina, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). The analysis is based on integration of the hydrologic model hydraulic models to delineate the flood inundation zones. A flood risk matrix is developed based on the flood occurrence probability and the associated inundation depth. The risk matrix criterion is classified according to the degree of risks as high, moderate and low. The case study has indicted low to moderate risk for flood frequencies of 5 years return periods and moderate to high risk may exist for flood with rerun period of 50 and 100 years. The results are projected on a two-dimensional satellite images that shows the geographical locations exposed to flooding. A quantitative summary of the results have been presented graphically to estimate the magnitude of the inundation areas that can assess the degree of damage and its economic aspects. The developed flood risk matrix tool is a quantitative tool to assess the damage which is crucial for decision makers.
