[Termes IGN] niche écologiqueRésumé : (auteur) Biodiversity is declining globally at unprecedented rates. Ecological niche mod-els (ENMs) are one of the most widely used toolsets to appraise global changeimpacts on biodiversity. Here, we identify a variety of advantages of incorporat-ing remotely sensed ecosystem functioning attributes (EFAs) into ENMs. Thedevelopment of ENMs that explicitly incorporate ecosystem functioning willallow a more holistic and integrative perspective of the habitat dynamics. Thesynergies between the increasingly available open-access satellite images andcloud-based platforms for planetary-scale geospatial analysis offer an unprece-dented opportunity to incorporate ecosystem processes and disturbances (suchas fires, insect outbreaks or droughts) that have been so far largely neglected inecological niche characterization and modelling. The most paradigmatic exam-ple of EFAs is the application of time series of spectral vegetation indicesrelated to primary productivity and carbon cycle. EFAs related to surface energybalance and water cycles derived from remote sensing products such as landsurface temperature or soil moisture enable a fine-scale characterization of thespecies’ niche—eventually improving the predictive performance of ENMs. Allthese advantages confirm that a new generation of ENMs based on such EFAswould offer great perspectives to increase our ability to monitor habitat suit-ability trends and population dynamics. However, despite the technicaladvances and increasing effort of remote sensing community to develop inte-grative EFAs, ENMs have yet to make full profit of the most recent develop-ments by integrating them in ENMs. A coordinated agenda for remote sensingexperts and ecological modellers will be essential over the coming years tobridge the gap between remote sensing and ecology disciplines and to take full(and timely) advantage of the fast-growing body of Earth observation data andremote sensing technologies—with special emphasis on the development andtesting of new variables related to key processes driving ecosystem functioning. [Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (auteur) Information on grassland land-use intensity (LUI) is crucial for understanding trends and dynamics in biodiversity, ecosystem functioning, earth system science and environmental monitoring. LUI is a major driver for numerous environmental processes and indicators, such as primary production, nitrogen deposition and resilience to climate extremes. However, large extent, high resolution data on grassland LUI is rare. New satellite generations, such as Copernicus Sentinel-2, enable a spatially comprehensive detection of the mainly subtle changes induced by land-use intensification by their fine spatial and temporal resolution. We developed a methodology quantifying key parameters of grassland LUI such as grazing intensity, mowing frequency and fertiliser application across Germany using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) on Sentinel-2 satellite data with 20 m × 20 m spatial resolution. Subsequently, these land-use components were used to calculate a continuous LUI index. Predictions of LUI and its components were validated using comprehensive in situ grassland management data. A feature contribution analysis using Shapley values substantiates the applicability of the methodology by revealing a high relevance of springtime satellite observations and spectral bands related to vegetation health and structure. We achieved an overall classification accuracy of up to 66% for grazing intensity, 68% for mowing, 85% for fertilisation and an r2 of 0.82 for subsequently depicting LUI. We evaluated the methodology's robustness with a spatial 3-fold cross-validation by training and predicting on geographically distinctly separated regions. Spatial transferability was assessed by delineating the models' area of applicability. The presented methodology enables a high resolution, large extent mapping of land-use intensity of grasslands. [Termes IGN] segmentation sémantiqueRésumé : (auteur) Accurate information on the spatial distribution of plant species and communities is in high demand for various fields of application, such as nature conservation, forestry, and agriculture. A series of studies has shown that Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) accurately predict plant species and communities in high-resolution remote sensing data, in particular with data at the centimeter scale acquired with Unoccupied Aerial Vehicles (UAV). However, such tasks often require ample training data, which is commonly generated in the field via geocoded in-situ observations or labeling remote sensing data through visual interpretation. Both approaches are laborious and can present a critical bottleneck for CNN applications. An alternative source of training data is given by using knowledge on the appearance of plants in the form of plant photographs from citizen science projects such as the iNaturalist database. Such crowd-sourced plant photographs typically exhibit very different perspectives and great heterogeneity in various aspects, yet the sheer volume of data could reveal great potential for application to bird’s eye views from remote sensing platforms. Here, we explore the potential of transfer learning from such a crowd-sourced data treasure to the remote sensing context. Therefore, we investigate firstly, if we can use crowd-sourced plant photographs for CNN training and subsequent mapping of plant species in high-resolution remote sensing imagery. Secondly, we test if the predictive performance can be increased by a priori selecting photographs that share a more similar perspective to the remote sensing data. We used two case studies to test our proposed approach with multiple RGB orthoimages acquired from UAV with the target plant species Fallopia japonica and Portulacaria afra respectively. Our results demonstrate that CNN models trained with heterogeneous, crowd-sourced plant photographs can indeed predict the target species in UAV orthoimages with surprising accuracy. Filtering the crowd-sourced photographs used for training by acquisition properties increased the predictive performance. This study demonstrates that citizen science data can effectively anticipate a common bottleneck for vegetation assessments and provides an example on how we can effectively harness the ever-increasing availability of crowd-sourced and big data for remote sensing applications. [Termes IGN] zone semi-arideRésumé : (auteur) Data assimilation techniques allow researchers to optimally merge remote sensing observations in ecohydrological models, guiding them for improving land surface fluxes predictions. Presently, freely available remote sensing products, such as those of Sentinel 1 radar, Landsat 8 sensors, and Sentinel 2 sensors, allow the monitoring of land surface variables (e.g., radar backscatter for soil moisture and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and for leaf area index (LAI)) at unprecedentedly high spatial and time resolutions, appropriate for heterogeneous ecosystems, typical of semiarid ecosystems characterized by contrasting vegetation components (grass and trees) competing for water use. A multiscale assimilation approach that assimilates radar backscatter and grass and tree NDVI in a coupled vegetation dynamic–land surface model is proposed. It is based on the ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF), and it is not limited to assimilating remote sensing data for model predictions, but it uses assimilated data for dynamically updating key model parameters (the ENKFdc approach), including saturated hydraulic conductivity and grass and tree maintenance respiration coefficients, which are highly sensitive parameters of soil–water balance and biomass budget models, respectively. The proposed EnKFdc assimilation approach facilitated good predictions of soil moisture, grass, and tree LAI in a heterogeneous ecosystem in Sardinia for a 3-year period with contrasting hydrometeorological (dry vs. wet) conditions. Contrary to the EnKF-based approach, the proposed EnKFdc approach performed well for the full range of hydrometeorological conditions and parameters, even assuming extremely biased model conditions with very high or low parameter values compared with the calibrated (“true”) values. The EnKFdc approach is crucial for soil moisture and LAI predictions in winter and spring, key seasons for water resources management in Mediterranean water-limited ecosystems. The use of ENKFdc also enabled us to predict evapotranspiration and carbon flux well, with errors of less than 4% and 15%, respectively; such results were obtained even with extremely biased initial model conditions. [Termes IGN] zone ruraleRésumé : (auteur) The impact of heat waves (HWs) on surface urban heat islands (SUHIs) has been widely studied, but the spatial pattern of SUHI responsiveness to HWs across various climates remains unclear, and the influence of HW intensity on SUHI responsiveness has not been systematically quantified. Using MODIS land surface temperature data, here we investigated the responsiveness of SUHI to HWs (quantified as ∆I) as well as its variations with HW intensity in 354 cities in seven climate zones across China. We find that during HW periods, the SUHI and surface urban cool island are augmented in the humid and arid regions of China, respectively. The inter-city heterogeneity in rural vegetation coverage accounts for such a spatial pattern. In eastern China, the ∆I peaks in the north subtropical climate (0.72 ± 0.54 K for daytime and 0.29 ± 0.23 K for the nighttime) probably for its specific rural farming method. With the intensification of HWs, the augmentation effect can be further enhanced for the north subtropical, warm temperate, and arid temperate climates during the day and for almost all the climates at night. These findings can help advance the understanding of the responsiveness of SUHI to extreme climatic events.
