[Termes IGN] surveillance de la végétationRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a multiannual comparison at regional scale of currently available 1-km global leaf area index (LAI) products with crop-specific green area index (GAI) retrieved from 250-m spatial resolution imagery from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). The crop-specific GAI product benefits from the following extra processing steps: 1) spatial filtering of time series based on pixel purity; 2) transforming the time scale to thermal time; and 3) fitting a canopy structural dynamic model to smooth out the signal. In order to perform a rigorous comparison, these steps were also applied to the 1-km LAI products, namely, MODIS LAI (MCD15) and LAI produced in the CYCLOPES (Carbon cYcle and Change in Land Observational Products from an Ensemble of Satellites) project. A simple indicator was also designed to quantify the increase in temporal smoothness that can thus be obtained. The results confirm that, for winter wheat, the 250-m GAI product provides a more realistic description of the time course of the biophysical variable in terms of reaching higher values, grasping the variability, and providing smoother time series. However, the use of thermal time and pixel purity also improves the temporal consistency and coherence of the 1-km products. Overall, the results of this study suggest that these techniques could be valuable in harmonizing remote sensing data coming from different sources with varying spatial and temporal resolution for enhanced vegetation monitoring. [Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (Auteur) The objective of this paper is to study, on a weekly basis, the explanatory power of one satellite-based measurement, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), for wheat yield modelling in 40 census agricultural regions (CAR) in the Canadian Prairies during the whole growing season using 16 years of NOAA AVHRR satellite data (between 1987 and 2002). We also explore the relative value of NDVI compared with a land-based measurement, the Cumulative Moisture Index (CMI). By developing a series of weekly wheat yield models over the course of the growing season, we are able to determine the accuracy of different models. Our findings indicate that NDVI possesses explanatory power 4 weeks earlier in the season than CMI. [Termes IGN] Vegetation Health IndexRésumé : (Auteur) The continuous increase of heavy metal ions in the environment is imposing serious problems in agricultural yield and increases human health threats through accumulation in the food chain. Various studies have shown that heavy metals influence the metabolic processes and pigment concentrations in leaves, and thus affect the laser induced fluorescence (LIF) spectra. Leaf level in vivo LIF spectra using the 488 nm and 355 nm laser lines, fluorescence induction kinetics (FIK) using the 488 nm laser line, and photosynthetic pigments of the control and nickel treated wheat seedlings were measured. The peak parameters of the blue and UV-excited spectral bands were calculated by Gaussian curve fitting. The FIK measured at both the chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence bands was used to evaluate the fluorescence decrease ratio (R Fd). The variations in RFd and fluorescence ratios of intensities, bandwidth and band area, with varying concentrations of nickel, were revealed as promising parameters in determining the health status of wheat seedlings. These leaf level findings can be extended at canopy level in the field using laser based light detection and ranging (LIDAR) systems. [Termes IGN] zone arideRésumé : (Auteur) This letter shows the results of early crop prediction from combined use of AVHRR-NDVI data and drought indices at different time-scales. The study was carried out inan agricultural municipality located in the Middle Ebro valley, one of the most arid regions in Europe. The methodology proposed here has allowed the prediction of wheat and barley production in February, four months before harvest. Moreover, the predictive models created have explained 88% and 82% of the temporal variability of wheat and barley production respectively. This procedure could be every useful for managing crop production at a municipal level. Moreover, insurance companies could take advantage of the early prediction of crop losses, which are very frequent in this drought-affected area. [Termes IGN] végétationRésumé : (Auteur) Hyperspectral features in the red-edge region were tested as an index of plant stress responses to soil -oxygen depletion. The aim was to provide the basis for a warning system to identify natural gas leakage by the spectral responses of plants growing in the affected soil.
Elevated concentrations of natural gas in the soil atmosphere were used to deplete oxygen concentrations around the roots of grass, wheat (Hordeum vulgare cv Claire) and bean (Vicia faba cv Clipper) growing in a field facility. Visible symptoms due to the natural gas included reduced growth of the plants and chlorosis of the leaves.
Spectral responses included increased reflectance in the visible wavelengths and decreased reflectance in the near infra-red. Derivative analysis identified features within the red-edge at 720-730 and 702 nm. Ratios of the magnitude of the derivative at 725 to that at 702 nm were less in areas where gas was present. This ratio enabled identification of stress due to gas leakage up to 7 days before visible symptoms were observed and also at the edges of gassed plots where visible symptoms were not expressed. The technique was able to identify stress responses to long-term leaks in all the crops tested but to short-term leaks only in grass.
