[Vedettes matières IGN] SylvicultureRésumé : (auteur) Mediterranean stone pine reforestations are common characteristics of the Italian Tyrrhenian coast, which mostly maintain uniform and monolayered stand structures. However, improving structural diversity is an effective climate change adaptation strategy in forest management. The aim of this study was to implement a methodology which allows distinct reforested areas such as a single green infrastructure to be managed according to the surrounding land use and the characteristics of the forest stands. 240 hectares of Mediterranean stone pine forests located along a 16 km strip of the Lazio coast (Central Italy) were mapped. Twelve attributes describing the pine stands and showing possible constraints for future management decisions were associated to each forest patch. A hierarchical cluster analysis was performed to group the pinewood patches according to their similarity level and five different groups were identified. For each group, different silvicultural methods were proposed to guide the compositional and structural evolution of the stands, in order to make them suitable for providing services required locally and increasing overall diversity at landscape scale. The results of the study highlight how coastal land uses can offer effective inputs to differentiate the management of forest systems and therefore achieve greater variety and resilience in the landscape over time. This approach is particularly useful in the case of very homogeneous stands such as the stone pine reforestations under study. Its interests lie in the ability of sensors aboard satellites to provide information at global, regional and local scales. Optical remote sensing has shown great potential for the monitoring of forest disturbances. Until recently, deforestation monitoring systems were mainly based on remotely sensed optical images. In the intertropical latitudes, such images often face limitations of frequent cloud cover, leading to late detection or misdetections due to the low temporal availability of new images uncontaminated by clouds. In tropical humid forests, regrowth can close canopy gaps between two non-cloud-contaminated optical images used for detection.New SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) systems have opened new perspectives for forest disturbance monitoring in tropical humid forests (Sentinel-1, PALSAR-2). These active sensors penetrate the clouds. The availability of Sentinel-1 C-band images at high spatial and temporal resolutions makes it a potential substitute of optical systems for monitoring disturbances in forest covers. This work is articulated around three parts. The first part consists in the development of a new change detection method for monitoring disturbances in forest cover, based on the Cumulative Sum algorithm (CuSum) combined with a bootstrap analysis. The method was applied to time-series of Sentinel-1 Ground-Range Detected (GRD) dual polarization (VV, VH) images obtained in a legal forest concession near Kisangani in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The results from VV and VH polarization were intersected in VV x VH result map, and a spatial recombination of a high Critical Threshold (Tc) with a low critical threshold was performed. The second part of this work is to develop a multiple-breakpoints version of the CuSum cross-Tc called ReCuSum to further enhance the ability to monitor changes in forest cover. The development was made by applying the CuSum cross-Tc over a time-series in an iterative manner, in the State of Parà, Brazilian Amazon. The third axis of this thesis is to develop a Near-Real-Time (NRT) version of the CuSum cross-Tc and to compare it with the state-of-the-art NRT algorithms (RADD, JJ-FAST GLAD, DETER-B, DETER-R). [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueIndex. décimale : THESE Thèses et HDR Résumé : (auteur) Global environmental changes are affecting tree population demography with potentially significant impacts on forest biodiversity and wood industry. Forest regeneration processes include seed production, growth and survival of saplings to the recruitment sizes at which trees are considered in forest inventories. Changes in regeneration dynamics directly affect forest composition and structure and can jeopardize the sustainability of forest management. This is especially the case in mountain forests where environmental gradients are strong and where forests are often uneven-aged, i.e. combining trees of all ages in a single stand. Regeneration processes are difficult to monitor. Large data sets often give only fixed pictures of sapling densities with little information on demographic processes. In this thesis, we quantified the effects of different biotic and abiotic factors on regeneration dynamics of Picea abies (spruce), Abies alba (fir) and Fagus sylvatica (beech) in the French Alps and Jura mountains. We also predicted changes in tree recruitment fluxes in these forests, for potential climate change situations. We recorded sapling height increment and density of spruce, fir and beech in 152 plots across the French Alps and Jura mountains. We then analysed how biotic and abiotic factors known to affect regeneration, namely altitude, slope, aspect, light availability, soil characteristics, ungulate browsing, temperature, precipitation and evapotranspiration, affected sapling density and growth using non-linear mixed models. We showed that temperature has a positive non-linear effect on sapling height growth and water resource availability has a positive effect on sapling density. Terminal shoot browsing, which prevents sapling height growth, is especially frequent on fir. In a second analysis, we built a more comprehensive model of regeneration dynamics, representing explicitly the process of new seedling production, sapling growth, browsing and survival, and finally their recruitment into adult trees. We predicted parameters for these processes in combination, using Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC), based on the field data collected earlier. The results imply that more frequent and intense heat and drought events could negatively influence sapling growth and survival of the three species, with probable reduction of forest renewal fluxes. An increase of ungulate populations leading to increased browsing could be especially detrimental to fir and possibly also to beech saplings. We also predicted the potential tree recruitment fluxes for different IPCC climate projection scenarios for the year 2100, and showed that a reduction in tree recruitments is highly likely. This study shows that the ABC method can be efficiently used to estimate regeneration dynamic processes, based on sapling density, height increment and browsing data. It highlights the vulnerability of future forest regeneration to water availability and ungulate presence, urging researchers and forest managers alike to anticipate future potential important changes in mountain forest dynamics. Compared with in situ measurements of water quality parameters, which are often complex and expensive, remote sensing techniques, using hyperspectral data analysis, are fast and cost-effective. The objectives of this study are (1) to estimate the algae concentrations from hyperspectral data using deep learning techniques, (2) to investigate the applicability of attention mechanisms in the analysis of hyperspectral data, and (3) to augment the training data using generative adversarial networks (GANs). The results show that the accuracy of deep learning techniques is 7.6% higher than that of simpler artificial neural networks. Compared to noise injection and principal component analysis-based data augmentation, the use of a GAN-based data augmentation method significantly improves the accuracy of algae concentration estimates (>5%). In addition, models with added attention mechanisms yield an on average 3.13% higher accuracy than those without attention techniques. This result demonstrates the improvement of spectral features of artificial hyperspectral data based on the self-attention approach, revealing the potential of attention techniques in hyperspectral remote sensing.
