[Termes IGN] topologieRésumé : (auteur) Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) is a ground-based approach to rapidly acquire 3D point clouds via Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technologies. Quantifying tree-scale structure from TLS point clouds requires segmentation, yet there is a lack of automated methods available to the forest ecology community. In this work, we consider the problem of segmenting a forest TLS point cloud into individual tree point clouds. Different approaches have been investigated to identify and segment individual trees in a forest point cloud. Typically these methods require intensive parameter tuning and time-consuming user interactions, which has inhibited the application of TLS to large area research. Our goal is to define a new automated segmentation method that lifts these limitations. Our Topology-based Tree Segmentation (TTS) algorithm uses a new topological technique rooted in discrete Morse theory to segment input point clouds into single trees. TTS algorithm identifies distinctive tree structures (i.e., tree bottoms and tops) without user interactions. Tree tops and bottoms are then used to reconstruct single trees using the notion of relevant topological features. This mathematically well-established notion helps distinguish between noise and relevant tree features. To demonstrate the generality of our approach, we present an evaluation using multiple datasets, including different forest types and point densities. We also compare our TTS approach with open-source tree segmentation methods. The experiments show that we achieve a higher segmentation accuracy when performing point-by-point validation. Without expensive user interactions, TTS algorithm is promising for greater usage of TLS point clouds in the forest ecology community, such as fire risk and behavior modeling, estimating tree-level biodiversity structural traits, and above-ground biomass monitoring. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Mediterranean riparian forests have been altered by past use and are also negatively impacted by climate and hydrological droughts. However, we lack data on their historical changes in extent combined with multi-proxy, long-term assessments of tree growth and leaf gas exchange responses to climate, drought severity and river flow. These evaluations must also consider their current stand structure and the amount of lying deadwood which are proxies of river dynamics and forest maturity. To fill these research gaps, we studied four riparian tree species (Populus alba, Populus nigra, Fraxinus angustifolia and Ulmus minor) inhabiting a Mediterranean riparian forest located in north-eastern Spain. We quantified and analyzed: stand structure; lying deadwood; radial growth; relationships between growth, climate variables, the SPEI drought index and river flow; stable C (δ13C) and O (δ18O) isotopes in wood of P. alba, P. nigra and F. angustifolia; and earlywood anatomy in F. angustifolia. Mature sites were dominated by P. nigra and F. angustifolia and showed the highest amount of decayed lying deadwood. Radial growth was reduced by drought and low spring-summer river flow. We found the highest growth responses to 3- (P. nigra, r = 0.62; P. alba, r = 0.46) or 12-month SPEI (F. angustifolia, r = 0.54; U. minor, r = 0.53). The coordinated decrease in δ18O and intrinsic water-use efficiency (WUE) in P. alba and P. nigra could involve an increase in stomatal conductance rate. P. alba and P. nigra were more enriched in δ18O than F. angustifolia, suggesting the former used more enriched shallow groundwater in dry periods. The F. angustifolia WUE and P. nigra δ18O series were positively and negatively correlated with the SPEI, respectively. The F. angustifolia hydraulic diameter decreased in response to drought, whereas its vessel density and WUE were positively associated. Overall, P. nigra and F. angustifolia were the species most responsive to drought. Yet, less optimal fixed-width approach is still largely used, likely because of its simple design and implementation. We examined the efficiency of varying-width buffer zones based on depth-to-water (DTW) index in protecting stream riparian plant communities. We further compared the economic costs of DTW-based buffer to commonly used 5, 10 and 15 m fixed-width buffers. We also included an additional buffer based on a combination of DTW and erosion risk (Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation, RUSLE) into these comparisons to see the extent and cost of a buffer that should maximize the protection of the linked aquatic environment. Plant species richness increased with increasing soil moisture and species preferring moist conditions, nutrient-rich soils and high pH were clearly more abundant adjacent to stream in areas with high predicted soil moisture than in dry areas. Differences in species richness were paralleled by differences in community composition and higher beta diversity of plant communities in wet than in dry riparian areas. There were also several indicator species typical for moist and nutrient-rich soils for wet riparian areas. Riparian buffer zones based on DTW were on average larger than 15 m wide fixed-width buffers. However, the cost for DTW-based buffer was lower than for fixed-width buffer zones when the cost was normalized by area. Simulated selective cutting decreased the costs, but cutting possibilities were variable among streams and depended on the characteristics of forest stands. Our results thus suggest a high potential of DTW in predicting wet areas and variable-width buffer zones based on these areas in the protection of riparian biodiversity and stream ecosystems. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) In recent decades, die-off events in Pinus sylvestris populations have increased. The causes of these phenomena, which are usually related to local and regional extreme hot droughts, have been extensively investigated from a physiological viewpoint. However, the consequences of die-off process in terms of demography and vegetation dynamics have been less thoroughly addressed. Here, we projected P. sylvestris plot dynamics after a die-off event, under climate change scenarios, considering also their early demographic stages (i.e., seedlings, saplings and ingrowth from the sapling to adult class), to assess the resilience of P. sylvestris populations after such events. We used Integral Projection Models (IPMs) to project future plot structure under current climate, and under RCP4.5 and RCP8.0 climate scenarios, using climatic suitability – extracted from Species Distribution Models – as a covariable in the estimations of vital rates over time. Field data feeding IPMs were obtained from two successive surveys, at the end of the die-off event (2013) and four years later (2017), undertaken on populations situated across the P. sylvestris range of distribution in Catalonia (NE Spain). Plots affected by die-off experienced a loss of large trees, which causes that basal area, tree diameter and tree density will remain lower for decades relative to unaffected plots. After the event, this situation is partially counterbalanced in affected plots by a greater increase in basal area and seedling recruitment into tree stage, thus promoting resilience. However, resilience is delayed under the climate-change scenarios with warmer and drier conditions involving additional physiological stress, due to a reduced abundance of seedlings and a smaller plot basal area. The study shows lagged effect of drought-induced die-off events on forest structure, also revealing stabilizing mechanisms, such as recruitment and tree growth release, which enhance resilience. However, these mechanisms would be jeopardized by oncoming regional warming. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Forest management is under intensifying ecological and societal pressures amid the current geological epoch, which some see becoming the Anthropocene. These pressures extend to temporal and physical scales typical of geology; however, integrating geological processes into forest management has lagged behind the inclusion of shorter-term and surficial ecosystem processes. As such, we examine the field of critical zone science for connections that translate geologic knowledge to forest management and planning. Earth’s critical zone is the thin near-surface zone spanning from the bottom of circulating groundwater to the top of the atmospheric boundary layer of forest canopies. We explore four case studies from regions of the U.S.A. to highlight how recent critical zone discoveries inform contemporary forest management challenges. Some examples of management-relevant research include mediation of the impacts of climate change on forest productivity across gradients in geology, aspect, and topography; the role of bedrock water storage on drought resistance; hydrology-vegetation interactions following pest outbreaks; and quantification of water partitioning and erosion following fire. The accelerated pace of critical zone discovery has been synchronous with increased availability of open-source data resources for forest managers to expand this framework in management and planning.
