[Termes IGN] zone intertropicaleRésumé : (Auteur) The study examined the capability of dual-polarization SAR data for forest cover mapping and change assessment in the Brazilian Amazon Forest regions. Shuttle Imaging Radar (SIR)-C and Advanced Land Observing Satellite Phased Array L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (ALOS PALSAR) data were analysed to map and quantify deforestation. The images were classified using hybrid classifier, where each land cover was grouped in various spectral sub-classes interpreted on the imagery and later merged together to generate the desired land cover classes. The classification accuracy for forest was reasonably high (>90%). The technique applied in this study can be extended for operational mapping and monitoring of deforestation in the tropics, particularly for those regions which are often covered by cloud. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Comme de nombreux estuaires, l'estuaire de la Loire a été profondément modifié depuis plusieurs siècles par l'interaction entre les processus naturels et les activités humaines, notamment pour les besoins de la navigation et par le développement de l'industrie portuaire. Dans cette étude, une analyse spatiale et temporelle de la végétation permet de décrire les conséquences de ces changements. La dynamique de la végétation est analysée à l'aide d'un système d'information géographique sur une période de 30 ans, au niveau du lit majeur de la rive nord de la section intermédiaire de l'estuaire. La dynamique de ces végétations est décrite par l'analyse diachronique de documents cartographiques historiques. Ceux-ci sont comparés à la cartographie réalisée en 2011 en croisant les différentes couches d'informations sous système d'information géographique qui sont ensuite analysées selon le modèle des matrices de transition. Les probabilités de transition obtenues fournissent une description quantitative des successions végétales, qui, complétées par des informations fournies par les valeurs indicatrices des espèces végétales, mettent en évidence des modifications majeures de l'environnement physico-chimique (salinisation, sédimentation), ainsi que des changements d'usage du milieu (pression de pâturage, pratique cynégétique). [Termes IGN] forêtRésumé : Forest fragmentation threatens the sustainability of forest interior environments, thereby endangering subordinate ecological attributes and functions. We analyzed the spatial patterns of forest loss and gain for the conterminous United States from 2001 to 2006 to determine whether forest interior environments were maintained at five spatial scales. A 1.1% net loss of total forest area translated to net losses of 3.2% to 10.5% of forest interior area over spatial scales of 4.41 ha to 5,310 ha. At the 65.6-ha scale, the reduction of forest interior area was 50,000 km2 – almost double the net loss of total forest area. The pervasive discrepancy between total forest loss and forest interior loss indicates a widespread shift of the extant forest to more fragmented conditions, even in regions exhibiting small net changes in extant forest area. In the conterminous United States, trends in total forest area underestimate threats to forest from forest fragmentation.
