[Termes IGN] stress hydriqueRésumé : (auteur) Overall health condition of the vegetation is obtained by combining satellite data derived moisture and thermal stresses present in vegetation condition index (VCI) and thermal condition index (TCI), respectively and improves the accuracy of drought classification. Although vegetation health index fuses the information present in VCI and TCI, the relative contribution of each index depends on prior knowledge of the study area. Therefore, the random weighing method is used to obtain optimal weights of VCI and TCI based on variances of individual indices. The obtained fusion results of a normal and drought year demonstrate that the random weighing fusion achieves better estimation of agriculture drought without requiring apriori information and the obtained drought classification results are in line with the available ground truth precipitation records. In addition, the correlation analysis of the obtained optimal weights and standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index exhibited a strong correlation with a Pearson’s correlation coefficient of above 0.8. The study also showed that the relative contribution of VCI is prevalent in normal conditions while TCI in dry to extreme dry conditions. The urban spaces, which are becoming increasingly extensive and dense, are particularly sensitive to the effects of climate change. Greening cities has been identified as one of the most effective ways to mitigate one of these effects, the urban heat island. In this context, the city of Liège, Belgium, has adopted a greening plan, called “Plan canopée”, to increase the tree canopy area at city level. The aim of this study is to present the methodology used to objectivize and prioritize the selection of potential planting sites. This research proposes the production of a series of spatial indicators allowing, on the one hand, the precise mapping of urban surfaces ready for planting, and on the other hand, the objective prioritization of city districts to be vegetated. The research integrates airborne image classification, urban heat island modeling and a series of reference geodata combinations. The set of data produced provides a transparent decision support tool to the authorities for the operational planning of tree plantations. These results contribute to the development of a planting strategy that maximizes the chances of ownership by the citizens, and consequently the sustainable and effective impact of the achievements. [Termes IGN] voxelRésumé : (auteur) Bushfires are an intrinsic part of the New South Wales’ (NSW) environment in Australia, especially in the Blue Mountains region (11400km2), that is dominated by fire prone vegetation that includes heathland. Many of the Australian native plants in this region are fire-prone and combustible, and many species even require fire to regenerate. The classification of the lateral and vertical distribution of living vegetation is necessary to manage the complexity of bushfires. Currently, interpretation of aerial and satellite images is the prevalent method for the classification of vegetation in NSW. The result does not represent important vegetation structural attributes, such as vegetation height, subcanopy height, and destiny. This paper presents an automated method for the three-dimensional modelling of heathland and important heathland parameters, such as heath shrub height and continuity, and sparse tree and mallee height and density in support of bushfire behaviour modelling. For this study airborne lidar point clouds with a density of 120 points per square meter are used. For the processing and modelling the study is divided into a point cloud processing phase and a voxel-based modelling phase. The point cloud processing phase consists of the normalisation of the height and extraction of the above ground vegetation, while the voxel phase consists of seeded region growing for segmentation, and K-means clustering for the classification of the vegetation into three different canopy layers: a) heath shrubs, b) sparse trees and mallee, c) tall trees. [Vedettes matières IGN] ForesterieRésumé : (auteur) Under the continuous pressure of Dutch elm disease (DED) in Europe, increasing the genetic diversity of Ulmus minor trees resistant to Ophiostoma novo-ulmi is a priority for the species conservation and reintroduction. In this work we screened 121 U. minor genotypes for resistance to O. novo-ulmi under field experimental conditions. The genotypes had been previously obtained through controlled crosses between two moderately resistant (dams) and one susceptible (sire) genotypes. After two years of artificial inoculations with O. novo-ulmi, transgressive resistance was present but not prevalent, and a moderate relation was found between tree growth and susceptibility. Heritability estimates of DED resistance endorse significant genetic control and higher estimates for experimental blocks with milder symptoms. Three genotypes excelled for their high DED resistance, showing average foliage wilting values below 30% after the two years of inoculations. The genetic fingerprint, leaf phenology and morphology, and ornamental traits of these three genotypes were evaluated to facilitate their identification and use by stakeholders. Nuclear microsatellite profiling displayed unique barcodes for each genotype, ensuring traceability of the plant material. Morphological and phenological traits of the three genotypes are quite similar and fall within the species standards. In base of these results, three new native genotypes are proposed as basic materials for elm reintroduction in Western Europe. [Termes IGN] variation temporelleRésumé : (auteur) North China Plain is the largest agricultural production center in China and wheat-maize rotation is a widespread cultivation practice in this area. As gross primary production (GPP) is a proxy of land productivity, research on its spatial-temporal dynamics helps understand the variation of grain production in wheat-maize rotation. Here, Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data and ground observation data were combined to drive Vegetation Photosynthesis Model (VPM) in GPP estimation over wheat-maize rotation area during 2000–2015. Annual GPP has increased by 540.95 g C m−2 year−1 from 2000 to 2015, while total annual GPP has grown ∼150% than that of 2000. Moreover, annual GPP showed an increasing trend in the consecutively wheat-maize rotation area between 2000 and 2015. A strong linear relationship between GPP estimates and grain production demonstrated the potential of using VPM model to evaluate grain production in wheat-maize rotation area of Henan province, China.
