[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) We compared results derived using three different approaches to assess the suitability of common tree species on the Franconian Plateau in southern Germany under projected warmer and drier climate conditions in the period 2061-2080. The study area is currently a relatively warm and dry region of Germany. We calculated species distribution models (SDMs) using information on species’ climate envelopes to predict regional species spectra under 63 different climate change scenarios. We complemented this with fine-scale ecological niche analysis using data from 51 vegetation surveys in seven forest reserves in the study area, and tree-ring analysis (TRA) from local populations of five tree species to quantify their sensitivity to climatic extreme years. The SDMs showed that predicted future climate change in the region remains within the climate envelope of certain species (e.g. Quercus petraea), whilst for e.g. Fagus sylvatica, future climate conditions in one third of the scenarios are too warm and dry. This was confirmed by the TRA: sensitivity to drought periods is lower for Q. petraea than for F. sylvatica. The niche analysis shows that the local ecological niches of Quercus robur and Fraxinus excelsior are mainly characterized by soils providing favorable water supply than by climate, and Pinus sylvestris (planted) is strongly influenced by light availability. The best adapted species for a warmer and potentially drier climate in the study region are Acer campestre, Sorbus torminalis, S. aria, Ulmus minor, and Tilia platyphyllos, which should therefore play a more prominent role in future climate-resilient mixed forest ecosystems. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Mangroves are an important terrestrial carbon reservoir with numerous ecosystem services. Yet, it is difficult to inventory mangroves because of their low accessibility. A sampling approach that produces accurate assessment while maximizing logistical integrity of inventory operation is often required. Spatial decision support systems (SDSSs) provide support for integrating such a sampling design of fieldwork with operational considerations and evaluation of alternative scenarios. However, this fieldwork design driven by SDSS is often computationally intensive and repetitive. In this study, we develop a cyber-enabled SDSS framework to facilitate the computationally challenging fieldwork design that requires the efficacious selection of base camps and plots for the inventory of mangroves. Our study area is the Zambezi River Delta, Mozambique. Cyber-enabled capabilities, including scientific workflows and cloud computing, are integrated with the SDSS. Scientific workflows enable the automation of data and modeling tasks in the SDSS. Cloud computing offers on-demand computational support for interoperation among stakeholders for collaborative scenario evaluation for the fieldwork design of mangrove inventory. Further, this framework allows for harnessing high-performance computing capabilities for accelerating the fieldwork design. The cyber-enabled framework provides significant merits in terms of effective coordination among science and logistical teams, assurance of meeting inventory objectives, and an objective basis to collectively and efficaciously evaluate alternative scenarios. [Termes IGN] web mappingRésumé : (auteur) Geospatial cloud computing offers computing infrastructure, software and data services that enable rapid integration of ecological data from various resources. The objectives of this study were to utilize readily-available and low-cost technology (e.g., GPS–enabled cameras, Cloud photo storage, Google Drive) to create a cloud-based spatial-temporal inventory of plant (including flowering phenology) and other relevant information. An interactive ArcGIS Online Map of Lake Issaqueena, SC with sampling locations of flowering plants allows users to obtain additional information (plant, soil, weather data) by selecting sampling locations or soil polygons. The contents of the map can be filtered using any of the attributes (e.g., growth form) in the data tables by selecting specific information. Plant information can be viewed at custom time intervals using the settings in ArcGIS Online. Spatial patterns (e.g., clustering) in the plant data can be viewed using the ArcGIS Online heat map view. The map can be easily queried and viewed on both computers and hand-held devices. Services from multiple cloud infrastructures can be integrated for use by various species monitoring programs, improving workflow and assessment capabilities. [Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Maintaining and increasing landscape connectivity, especially of forest landscapes, are some of the main concerns regarding biodiversity conservation. The connectivity of protected areas for different species represents an indicator for evaluating the effectiveness of the Natura 2000 network. Our research aims to evaluate the connectivity of forest landscapes in the Romanian Alpine Biogeographical Region (ABR) for various terrestrial species. We analysed the distribution of forest patches and Sites of Community Importance (SCI), as part of Natura 2000 network, in the Romanian ABR. We evaluated the connectivity of forest patches for terrestrial species with different dispersal distances, identifying those patches with significant contribution to maintain the forest landscape connectivity, through the graph theory approach. To quantify the importance of each node, we evaluated the dPCconnector fraction derived from the dPC index. Of the 125 SCIs in the Romanian ABR, 71 protected areas have over 1000 ha, four of them have more than 100,000 ha. The total protected surfaces cover ~35% of the Romanian ABR, and the forest surfaces, protected in SCIs, cover 26% of the total Romanian ABR. Regarding the connectivity scores, we found that the forest surfaces across the ABR are well connected (0.89 or 1 for different dispersal distances) in comparison with the Natura 2000 forest patches. The forest patches are well connected especially for the species with large dispersal distance in both cases (d = 25 km). For the species characterized by a small dispersion distance, the connectivity is lower (0.46) in the case of protected forests. Our results evidence that the connectivity objective of the forest surfaces protected through the Nature 2000 network is not totally achieved. Furthermore new protected areas are needed where the forest are still present for increasing landscape connectivity for species. [Termes IGN] surface terrièreRésumé : (Auteur) The correct and accurate assessments of growing stock (stem volume) in combination with forest growth predictions from models are essential for sustainable forest management. Currently, no such information exists for the broadleaved forests of Bhutan. This study evaluates the important factors of individual tree growth for broadleaved species in Dagana, Bhutan. Data were collected from 96 inventory plots covering forest stand information, tree and stand parameters along with 5-year tree growth increment information from tree cores. Due to the large number of tree species (87), four species groups were created using principal component and cluster analysis to simplify the calibration of individual tree basal area increment (BAI) models. The main determinants of tree growth were shown to be tree size variables and competition within a forest stand. Distance dependent competition indices showed higher correlation to growth than distance independent competition indices. The resulting increment models provided consistent and unbiased estimates of individual tree BAI predictions. Increasing competition levels reduce the productivity of the individual trees. This emphasises the need for crown release to obtain higher individual tree growth. We demonstrate that the BAI models developed in this study can be used to predict tree growth by species group according to different stand density conditions and, if they are verified on a wider scale, could form the basis of sustainable forest management in Bhutan.
