[Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (auteur) This work aims to analyze the potential of the Photogrammetric Point Cloud (PPC) obtained from Remote Piloted Aircraft (RPA) optical images for detecting and obtaining tree heights in a loblolly pine plantation using a global maximum filter. The enhanced algorithm used in this study is then named STD (Single Tree Detection). Field surveys were conducted to count all the trees in the field (Forest Census) and measure the trees’ height with a vertex hypsometer. The results were faced to PCC outcomes. The detection rate (r) was equal to the precision rate (p), indicating that the algorithm reaches a high tree detection performance. In summary, the STD algorithm segmented 2,192 trees, representing 89% of trees recorded in the forest census. The retrieved tree height reached, on average, a height of 17.05 m, whereas slightly higher by the traditional forest inventory (17.42 m). The root-mean-square error (RMSE) and Bias were 47 cm (2.8%) and -37 cm (-2.2%), respectively. The Dunnett test showed that the tree height did not significantly differ between the results obtained by traditional forest inventory from those generated by the STD. It confirms the potential use of PPC for forest inventory procedures. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (Auteur) High resolution satellite imagery and airborne Lidar data can characterize the earth surface with unprecedented details in spatial and structure information, respectively. However, most studies have used them separately instead of in combination for land surface mapping. Considering their highly complementary nature, it is critical to investigate whether and how the integration of both can improve the accuracy of land cover and land use (LCLU) mapping. This study explored the use of Quickbird imagery and airborne Lidar data for mapping a complex urban environment in the City of Curitiba, Parana State, Southern Brazil, which is composed of secondary shrub vegetation, grass and climax primary Araucaria forests combined with urban objects such as roads and buildings. Airborne Lidar data were processed to generate DEM, DSM (Digital Surface Model), and DHM (Digital Height Model). The DSM generated from Lidar data were used to orthorectify Quickbird image with photogrammetric skills. A large number of metrics are generated from Lidar DHM, Lidar point cloud, Lidar intensity, and Quickbird imagery using object oriented segmentation approaches. Due to their power in handling non-parametric data, decision-tree based approaches were chosen to select the most relevant metrics and build rules for classification. It was found that the fusion of both types of data with decision trees increased the accuracy by 5 to 15% and resulted in an overall accuracy over 90%. Taking into account the increasing accessibility of Quickbird and airborne Lidar data, it is expected the methodology developed in this study has profound impacts in shifting our current paradigm in LCLU mapping. [Termes IGN] surveillance de la végétationRésumé : (Auteur) Wetlands are areas where the presence of water at or near the soil surface drives the natural system. Imaging radars (SARs) have distinct characteristics which make them of significant value for monitoring and mapping wetland inundation dynamics. The presence or absence of water (which has a much higher dielectric constant than dry or wet soil) in wetlands may significantly alter the signal detected from these areas depending on the dominant vegetation type, density, and height. The objective of this paper is to present our current research efforts to explain and correctly simulate the radar response of wetland vegetation/inundation mixtures, and use simulations as an aid for retrieval applications. The radar response of junco marshes under different flood conditions and vegetation stages is analysed using a set of 13 multipolarization ENVISAT ASAR scenes acquired over the Paraná River Delta marshes during the period 2003-2005. The main aspect of the approach followed is the simulation of SAR wave interactions with vegetation and water, using an adapted and improved version of the EM model developed at Tor Vergata University. The results obtained indicate that with the refined EM model, it is possible to represent with a good accuracy VV and HH SAR responses of junco marshes for a variety of environmental conditions. Further work and data are needed to explain measured HV backscattering. The general agreement obtained between simulations and observations permitted the development of a simple retrieval scheme, and estimates of water level below the canopy were obtained for different environmental conditions. RMS errors of forward simulations and retrievals are reported and discussed.
