[Termes IGN] QGISRésumé : (auteur) Contour lines are a key features of topographic maps as they make the comprehension of terrain more easy. But they are no longer drawn by cartographers, they are mostly automatically derived from digital terrain models. Despite real progress in this automated derivation, some specific terrain landscapes remain incorrectly depicted with such techniques, and this is the case for karstic plateaus full of sinkholes. This paper proposes a specific automated method to derive better contour lines in plateaus, particularly around sinkholes. The process first detects karstic plateaus with many sinkholes, as well as the individual sinkholes. Then, the DTM is smoothed to better reflect the terrain in the plateau and in its surroundings. As a third step, the contour lines around sinkholes are enhanced to draw legible round features that better reflect the real terrain. The process was implemented in a QGIS plugin and tested on a small area with a karstic plateau in the Jura mountain in France, and the cartographers of IGN, the French national mapping agency assessed the results as a great improvement compared to the generic automated process to derive contour lines. [Termes IGN] structure d'un peuplement forestierRésumé : (Auteur) Diameter at breast height (DBH) is one of the most important tree parameter for forest inventory. In this paper, we present a novel method for the adaptive and the accurate DBH estimation of trees characterized by small and large stems. The method automatically discriminates among different tree growth models by means of a data-driven technique based on a clustering procedure. First, the method detects young trees belonging to the lowest forest layer by simply considering the vertical structure of the forest. Then, different clusters of mature trees that are expected to share the same growth-model are identified by analyzing the environmental factors that can affect the stem expansion (e.g., topography and forest density). For each detected growth-model cluster, a tailored regression analysis is performed to obtain accurate DBH estimation results. Experiments have been carried out in an homogeneous coniferous forest located in the Alpine mountainous scenario characterized by a complex topography and a wide range of soil fertility. The method was tested on two data sets characterized by different light detection and ranging (LiDAR) point densities and different forest properties. The results obtained demonstrate the effectiveness of having multiple regression models adapted to the different growth models. [Termes IGN] sphèroïdeRésumé : (auteur) The method used by senior geodetic engineer Jean-Georges Affholder to determine what can be termed as the ‘centre of gravity’ of physical Europe in 1989 and 2004 relies on mathematical formulae which, in their only published version, happen to be flawed with typographical errors that do not reflect Mr. Affholder’s actual mathematical exactness. This short epistemological paper summarizes the major steps of Affholder’s method, provides a corrected version of the general formulae, and briefly recalls some particulars of the specific determination of the centre of gravity of physical Europe. [Termes IGN] surveillance hydrologiqueRésumé : (éditeur) This open access book addresses the various disciplinary aspects of nature-based solutions in flood risk management on private land. In recent decades, water management has been moving towards nature-based solutions. These are assumed to be much more multi-purpose than traditional “grey infrastructures” and seem to be regarded as a panacea for many environmental issues. At the same time, such measures require more – and mostly privately owned – land and more diverse stakeholder involvement than traditional (grey) engineering approaches. They also present challenges related to different disciplines. Nature-based solutions for flood risk management not only require technical expertise, but also call for interdisciplinary insights from land-use planning, economics, property rights, sociology, landscape planning, ecology, hydrology, agriculture and other disciplines to address the challenges of implementing them. Ultimately, nature-based flood risk management is a multi-disciplinary endeavor. Featuring numerous case studies of nature-based flood risk management accompanied by commentaries, this book presents brief academic reflections from two different disciplinary perspectives that critically highlight which specific aspects are of significance, and as such, underscore the multi-disciplinary nature of the challenges faced.
