[Termes IGN] troposphèreRésumé : (auteur) In this work, we compare IASI-retrieved vertical water vapour profiles and related precipitable water over a complex region, namely the Rhine Valley area, during the pre-operational period of IASI exploitation (June–August 2007). Both IASI water vapour mixing ratio profiles and integrated water vapour content are retrieved from L1C radiances spectra using two techniques and compared with water vapour related observations acquired during the Convective and Orographically-induced Precipitation Study (COPS) field campaign that took place in this area at that time (i.e. lidars, radiosoundings and a global positioning system - GPS - station network). This work addresses the issue of IASI vertical spatial resolution and its capability to detect two-layer water vapour structures such as those observed in a mountainous area and which play an important role in convective initiation or inhibition. We found that this capability mostly relies on the type of a-priori background vector (climatology or space-time colocated ECMWF analysis), which is used within the retrieval scheme. Systematic comparison of water vapour products derived from 71 IASI spectra confirms that IASI can retrieve water vapour amounts in 2 km width layers, in the lower troposphere, with an accuracy of approximately 10%. The knowledge of the stations coordinates allow to solve the zenith total delay (ZTD) at each location, and by appropriate model to deduce the content of water vapour of the atmosphere. If we can get that this information reaches at the maximum speed to the numerical weather prediction models they improve substantially. Instituto Geografico Nacional (IGN) at the request of Agencia Estatal de Meteorología (AEMET) participates since 2008 in the project of EUMETNET EIG GNSS water vapour programme E-GVAP as a processing expert institution achieving to process more than 300 stations every hour in our geographic area. C'est pourquoi, la détermination des délais troposphériques est particulièrement importante. Ces délais peuvent être séparés en deux parties indépendantes: une partie humide, l'autre dite hydrostatique (Saastamoinen, 1973).Partant d'un modèle empirique “aveugle” appelé GPT2 capable de déterminer la partie hydrostatique de ces délais (Lagler et al., 2013), un nouveau modèlenomméGPT2w fut développé lors de ce stage et est présenté dans ce rapport. Basé sur des données météorologiques du modèle numérique ERA-Interim du Centre Européen de Prévision Météorologique à Moyen Terme (CEPMMT, ECMWF en anglais), deux nouveaux paramètres un facteur de décroissance de la vapeur d'eau et une température moyenne ont été introduits pour pouvoir calculer la partie humide comme suggéré par (Askne and Nordius, 1987)et sont donc maintenant délivrés par GPT2w. Après avoir déterminé la résolution nécessaire pour ces paramètres (1° x 1° contre 5° x 5° pour GPT2), une comparaison avec des délais troposphériques dérivés de mesures GPS a été réalisée pour 167stations IGS de référence sur la période 2011-2012. GPT2w présente ainsi un biais moyen de -0.1 mm et une RMS de 39.9 mm. Note de contenu : INTRODUCTION

Modelling of agriculture in this region and similar locations depends on the availability and quality of satellite and ground data for agro-climate variables. We evaluated tropical rainfall measuring mission (TRMM) multi-satellite preparation analysis (TMPA) precipitation, atmospheric infrared sounder (AIRS) surface air temperature, and AIRS relative air humidity (RH). A significant bias was found within the temperature and RH products and no bias but an insufficient rain event detection skill in the precipitation product (probability of detection 0.3). A linear correction of the temperature product removed the bias as well as lowered the root mean square deviation (RMSD). The bias-corrections for RH led to increased RMSD or worse correlation. For precipitation, the correlation between the satellite product and ground data improved if cumulative precipitation or only precipitation during the growing season was used. [Termes IGN] ressources en eauRésumé : (auteur) L'amélioration de la compréhension du cycle de l'eau dans le système de la mousson ouest-africaine et de sa représentation dans les modèles est l'un des objectifs importants du programme AMMA. Le cycle de l'eau est le résultat d'interactions complexes entre l'atmosphère et le continent, dont les modalités sont très contrastées selon les échelles spatiales et temporelles, et les régions considérées. Les propriétés de la surface, du sol et du sous-sol conditionnent fortement la redistribution des précipitations sur le continent et la réalimentation de l'atmosphère, donnant lieu à des boucles de rétroaction encore mal comprises à ce stade. Les études de processus et les bilans d'eau établis à partir d'observations issues de la campagne AMMA, combinées à des produits de modélisation, nous permettent d'avancer sur la description et la compréhension de ces mécanismes. Il subsiste encore des incertitudes sur la quantification de certains processus notamment sur les liens entre l'évapotranspiration des surfaces, la végétation et les stocks d'eau souterrains. Au-delà de la compréhension du système de mousson, l'amélioration des modèles, de meilleures prévisions numériques en météorologie et le développement d'outils de quantification et de gestion des ressources en eau sont les principales applications attendues de ces travaux.
