[Termes IGN] troposphèreRésumé : (auteur) In this work, we compare IASI-retrieved vertical water vapour profiles and related precipitable water over a complex region, namely the Rhine Valley area, during the pre-operational period of IASI exploitation (June–August 2007). Both IASI water vapour mixing ratio profiles and integrated water vapour content are retrieved from L1C radiances spectra using two techniques and compared with water vapour related observations acquired during the Convective and Orographically-induced Precipitation Study (COPS) field campaign that took place in this area at that time (i.e. lidars, radiosoundings and a global positioning system - GPS - station network). This work addresses the issue of IASI vertical spatial resolution and its capability to detect two-layer water vapour structures such as those observed in a mountainous area and which play an important role in convective initiation or inhibition. We found that this capability mostly relies on the type of a-priori background vector (climatology or space-time colocated ECMWF analysis), which is used within the retrieval scheme. Systematic comparison of water vapour products derived from 71 IASI spectra confirms that IASI can retrieve water vapour amounts in 2 km width layers, in the lower troposphere, with an accuracy of approximately 10%. [Termes IGN] teneur en vapeur d'eauRésumé : (auteur) The Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) permanent stations that until now were just used for geodetic positioning have found a new application in the field of meteorology. The knowledge of the stations coordinates allow to solve the zenith total delay (ZTD) at each location, and by appropriate model to deduce the content of water vapour of the atmosphere. If we can get that this information reaches at the maximum speed to the numerical weather prediction models they improve substantially. Instituto Geografico Nacional (IGN) at the request of Agencia Estatal de Meteorología (AEMET) participates since 2008 in the project of EUMETNET EIG GNSS water vapour programme E-GVAP as a processing expert institution achieving to process more than 300 stations every hour in our geographic area. Note de contenu : INTRODUCTION

[Termes IGN] température au solRésumé : (Auteur) The climate of the United States Northern Great Plains region is highly variable. Modelling of agriculture in this region and similar locations depends on the availability and quality of satellite and ground data for agro-climate variables. We evaluated tropical rainfall measuring mission (TRMM) multi-satellite preparation analysis (TMPA) precipitation, atmospheric infrared sounder (AIRS) surface air temperature, and AIRS relative air humidity (RH). A significant bias was found within the temperature and RH products and no bias but an insufficient rain event detection skill in the precipitation product (probability of detection 0.3). A linear correction of the temperature product removed the bias as well as lowered the root mean square deviation (RMSD). The bias-corrections for RH led to increased RMSD or worse correlation. For precipitation, the correlation between the satellite product and ground data improved if cumulative precipitation or only precipitation during the growing season was used.
