Although least squares support vector machines (LSSVM) have been widely accepted as a classifier, their effect on smoothing noisy data is almost unknown. In this article, the smoothness of LSSVM was explored, and its effect on smoothing noisy data in DEM construction was tested. In order to improve the ability to deal with large datasets, a local method of LSSVM has been developed, where only the neighboring sampling points around the one to be estimated are used for computation. A numerical test indicated that LSSVM is more accurate than the classical smoothing methods including TPS and kriging, and its error surfaces are more evenly distributed. The real-world example of smoothing noise inherent in lidar-derived DEMs also showed that LSSVM has a positive smoothing effect, which is approximately as accurate as TPS. In short, LSSVM with a high efficiency can be considered as an alternative smoothing method for smoothing noisy data in DEM construction. [Termes IGN] indice de végétationRésumé : (Auteur) In the past 40 years, many spectral vegetation indices have been developed to quantify vegetation biophysical parameters. An ideal vegetation index should contain the maximum level of signal related to specific biophysical characteristics and the minimum level of noise such as background soil influences and atmospheric effects. However, accurate quantification of signal and noise in a vegetation index remains a challenge, because it requires a large number of field measurements or laboratory experiments. In this study, we applied a geostatistical method to estimate signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) for spectral vegetation indices. Based on the sample semivariogram of vegetation index images, we used the standardized noise to quantify the noise component of vegetation indices. In a case study in the grasslands and shrublands of the western United States, we demonstrated the geostatistical method for evaluating S/N for a series of soil-adjusted vegetation indices derived from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensor. The soil-adjusted vegetation indices were found to have higher S/N values than the traditional normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and simple ratio (SR) in the sparsely vegetated areas. This study shows that the proposed geostatistical analysis can constitute an efficient technique for estimating signal and noise components in vegetation indices. [Termes IGN] image radarRésumé : (Auteur) Image-subspace-based approach for speckle noise removal from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images is proposed. The underlying principle is to apply homomorphic framework in order to convert multiplicative speckle noise into additive and then to decompose the vector space of the noisy image into signal and noise subspaces. Enhancement is performed by nulling the noise subspace and estimating the clean image from the remaining signal subspace. Linear estimator minimizing image distortion while maintaining the residual noise energy below some given threshold is used to estimate the clean image. Experiments are carried out using synthetically generated data set with controlled statistics and real SAR image of Selangor area in Malaysia. The performance of the proposed technique is compared with Lee and homomorphic wavelet in terms of noise variance reduction and preservation of radiometric edges. The results indicate moderate noise reduction by the proposed filter in comparison to Lee but with a significantly less blurry effect and a comparable performance in terms of noise reduction to wavelet but with less artifacts. The results also show better preservation of edges, texture, and point targets by the proposed filter than both Lee and wavelet and less required computational time. [Vedettes matières IGN] Traitement de données GNSSRésumé : (auteur) Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) station coordinate errors over seasonal and longer time scales are known to be spatially and temporally correlated with flicker noise spectra. Overlaying this are strong annual and semiannual variations that cannot be explained by any single phenomenon. Next most prominent are harmonics of the GPS draconitic year with periods of (351.4/N) days. One explanation is that errors in the standard model for Earth orientation parameter (EOP) tidal variations near 12 and 24 h periods are absorbed into the resonant GPS orbit and daily EOP estimates, resulting mainly in draconitic and fortnightly alias signatures for 24 h product sampling. With the change in International GNSS Service (IGS) station coordinates from weekly to daily resolution in August 2012, it is now possible to study subseasonal performance. All IGS Analysis Centers (ACs) show fortnightly signals, but the resolution will not be sufficient to distinguish direct from aliased subdaily tidal error sources till two more years of data are available. Nevertheless, aliased errors from the subdaily EOP tide model are expected. All but one of the ACs that includes GLONASS data have signals at ~8 day periods, the ground repeat period for GLONASS orbits. This most likely arises from larger geographically correlated orbit errors for GLONASS. Two ACs possess unique short-period features that appear to be caused by peculiarities of their analysis strategies.
